Joe McElddery as Joseph! Also to star Lucy Kay (from Britians Got Talent) as Narrator! Anyone interested in seeing it?

I am! At first I was a bit dubious about the casting of Joe. In general I object to "him off the telly" being cast, as most of the time I think they sing it pop rather than musical theatre and I end up preferring the understudy who (in my opinion) can actually sing it properly! I also think it's really unfair on those who train hard and then find they are excluded from certain roles because they're not famous. And said famous people are only doing this because they're no longer successful at what they were famous for.
Anyway, rant over. I've seen a video of Joe singing Any Dream ... on Blue Peter and actually quite liked how he sang it so may be prepared to give him a go!

In fairness, I've never encountered any legit musical theatre actor who spent years training so that one day maybe they could play Joseph on the Bill Kenwright tour. Without a stunt cast Jo, it simply wouldn't exist, and it's hardly high art anyhow.

I'm taking my kids in March; I told them we'd go next time it was on at our local theatre. They've only seen the Donny Osmond DVD but love all the songs. Don't watch any TV talent shows so no idea what the cast is like!

Not really a fan of Joseph. I don't mind the music, but it's such a short show, which wouldn't be an issue if they didn't stick a 20 minute megamix on the end of it to bulk out the time (maybe an exaggeration). I am however a fan of Joe, so will likely go to see him perform. Back when I used to watch X Factor he was one of my favourite performers.

Remember all those thousands of children for whom Joseph is their first experience of musical theatre and who are hopefully captivated and return for more.It certainly influenced my son aged 9 - now trained and on the new tour! Having the opportunity to sing on stage in front of an audience is of course inspiring, but it's not a job that most musical theatre performers train for.

I *completely* understand the point that you're making - but I don't think anyone trains in musical theatre just for one specific job. They train to work in theatre, Joseph specifically being a musical, and in this current climate I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who wants to build a career in theatre turning down the opportunity of a high-profile 6 month-tour! I think I understand what you mean by the 'calibre' of a Kenwright tour, especially Joseph, but it's 10 shows a week for the entire run, mostly with 3 shows on a Saturday. That *is* demanding. And I know many of Kenwright's production values can be lacking, but not all. Glenn Miller Story, for instance, has been fabulously produced and the quality is of the highest standard. |

Had to search for this thread but saw the show last night and wanted to post my thoughts.
Lively audience of tipsy folk, well it was Sunderland, and generally well behaved.
I am not usually a fan of this show. Have seen some woeful performances over the years. It also seems that the story could be told in half an hour but then a reprise. ... then another. ... then another. ... but I enjoyed this version. Joe was very good. Acting was not fantastic but it worked. His Close Every Door was worth the ticket money alone. The brothers were full of energy and I really liked the narrator. Very powerful and belting voice.
Definately one of the best casts of this show I have seem and worth a watch.
Today they have three shows. 2pm, 5pm and 8pm which must be the cast (and front of house, cleaners etc) worst nightmare. A bit of a logistical nightmare.

It's just your standard pre show announcement about phones off etc but it also says "starring x factors joe Mcelderry and from Britain's got talent...." etc etc which is just so cheesy I was wondering if I had booked the local panto by mistake.

I saw this in Sunderland yesterday and also in Leeds at the end of March. I thought Joe was excellent, which I was really pleased to see as I haven't been too keen on recent "celebrity" Josephs. I agree with the earlier post that his Close Every Door was worth the ticket money - that was what made me go back to see him again! I've not seen many Josephs who can sing it like that including the high notes - and most who can have been understudies. The standing ovation Joe got at the end was almost instantaneous - and from the second he stopped singing, even before the megamix had started. I haven't seen that at Joseph for a very long time.

Re standing ovation, you have to remember this is a home town crowd for Joe so the atmosphere is always extra special.
The crowd at stage door was crazy afterwards too with well wishers.

Saw this recently. Thought I should add my thoughts.
Joe's voice is fantastic.
It's been over twenty years since I last saw it so really don't remember it. Some of it was so so tacky, I was embarrassed.
All the actors did their best and although it took me a while I got to like the Narrator's voice.
Back to Joe. Voice great, acting OK. Movement odd. He moved like a popstar/Diva. It just wasn't very natural. I can definitely see him in Priscilla in a few years.

He never said he wanted to be an actor, I guess. Nothing that that can't be overcome by throwing on a wig and some heels. You feel so much more fabulous with a wig on. I hear!  |

Saw this a few weeks ago. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't good either.
I used to like JOSEPH. I was in the children's choir as a kid, but as a piece is completely bonkers! The music is all over the place, and it veers too much on panto for my taste. The endless mega mix doesn't help matters either..
The production itself was quite tacky. I agree that Joe walked as though a model, and couldn't believe for a second that he could potentially get with Potiphar's wife. The performances across the board were just ok, but then the show doesn't really call for much I the way of acting.

Yes very panto. Was it always like that played so much for laughs? The comedy camels the 'chariot' of gold and the cringey dance sequences? 'Something something brother Joe, something something do-si-do,' cue a barn dance section.

The Kenwright tour of this show is dated and amateur. It's an embarrassment. The Palladium/Adelphi production shows how Joseph can be a polished, professional, piece of fun theatre when designed/directed by people with talent.

I saw the first and long running Kenwright tour of this xx number of times years ago. Yes it was dated but an honest production.
I saw the Palladium version and thought it brash, loud and dreadful.

I don't know if it was just matinee fatigue but the guy playing Pharaoh was awful, looked bored out of his skull. He shud have pulled a sickie and let one of the other cast have a go.
