Maybe they're banking on a bit of stunt casting for the Pharaoh etc? It'll only sell out arenas if they actually get Elvis to play Pharaoh! |

Looking at the list, it's doing 25 shows at the arena!! Surely even big stars would struggle to sell that?

I think Kenwright may be slightly overestimating Joe's appeal if he think he can sell out a huge arena.

But I agree, stupid idea. Even if they had all his friends, family and loved ones, it wouldn't even sell half of one night! |

I expect the Metro Radio Arena are trying this out to show it can work and then get a Mamma Mia or We Will Rock You style show in for next Christmas.

The trouble is Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You have built in audiences because of the bands they are representing ala Queen and Abba. It will be like a tribute act for some and, having just had a David Bowie tribute act at work (I work in a theatre) sell out 1000 seats and a Little Mix tribute act sell out 1000 seats and having to add a matinee that sold out too, tributes always get people through the door. Not to mention the success of the film Mamma Mia. So I imagine those are bound to do a lot better than this would. Because do the general public really want to see this show anyway to this capacity that would warrant this type of venue? How is the tour selling? Because on the name of Joseph alone, the size of venue is not appropriate at all. Unlike Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph wasn't exactly revolutionary was it? |

Mamma Mia! already played an incredibly successful Christmas season at the Metro Radio Arena in 2009. And just checked, its been massively reduced in size, even moreso than when Mamma Mia! played |

Oh my god I cannot WAIT to see those inflatable sheep in an arena (not that I'll be travelling to Newcastle to see it, mind). They couldn't stay up in Woking a few years ago so who knows what they might get up to in front on an audience of thousands!! Whose idea was this?!?!

Given how cheap this production is, it's going to be lost in such a huge venue. Maybe they're hoping people won't be able to see how cheap it is when they're sitting so far away... |

It's an innovative way of creating an additional large scale theatre venue for a family show at the busiest family theatre time of the year. Here in Cardiff one recent Xmas, National Theatre Wales staged the new Gruff Rhys family musical The Incredible Inflatable Candylion at the Swalec Stadium. But that didn't mean an audience of tens of thousands per performance! |

It didn't sell out when it came to the nearby Sunderland Empire recently so why would it sell out the arena? I just don't get it. You can see the seating plan on the arena's website, it's 1/3 of the arena at best. Still, the entire width of the floor is on sale and the stage is going to look SO lost in that place.
But what the hell, it's a cash cow for Kenwright and he knows it. I know Joe is from the North East but his fans are everywhere - I can't help but think that this might have done better somewhere with a higher concentration of people, such as Manchester/London? You'd still catch the Joe super fans who'll travel the country to watch his every show, but you'll also get the "normal" fans who just wanna see Joseph (presuming that there is anybody who actually wants to see it that is?)
I'm still longing for Starlight Express in a UK arena...
