Saw Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group's Jesus Christ Superstar at the Church Hill Theatre last night and absolutely loved it, production values were fantastic, easily one of the best amateur shows I've seen. This production has caught some attention for casting a non-binary Jesus and a female Judas, both of which were fantastic performers and really embodied their roles. Will keep an eye out for future EUSOG shows. Fresh from their sellout run of A Chorus Line at the Fringe, EUSOG have announced they're doing Little Shop of Horrors at the Church Hill Theatre in Edinburgh from 23-27 January 2024. Seriously considering heading up there to see it. I'd like a bonus visit to Edinburgh outside the festival and I'd love to see what EUSOG do with Little Shop of Horrors. |

Beautiful has recently been released for amateur performances. There's a production at the York Grand Opera House, presented by York Stage, between 15 and 23 September which seems an ambitious 10 show schedule. I'm fairly sure the touring professional production only offered an 8 show one week stay at each venue. I'm booked anyway. Will also mention this on the amateur musicals thread but thought fans of the show might not look there. I saw this at the matinee yesterday. I'd never seen it before, so didn't really know what to expect. I wasn't sure if it would really be my thing as I didn't think I'd know most of the songs, but there were a few I recognised. I've enjoyed previous shows I've seen by York Stage, so thought this would be a good chance to see it. I thought all the cast were excellent, especially Carole being on stage almost all the time. It certainly kept my attention well for something I didn't know if I would be that interested in, and overall I enjoyed it. As an aside, this was the first time I'd driven to York and used the park and ride, which was very easy and good value for money. I always used to go on the train, but this year I have been more adventurous in driving a bit further to theatres, as some of the train tickets have got really expensive, and I don't want to have to be reliant on trains if they go on strike when I want to be at the theatre. |

Weston Operatics are doing ‘Chess’ next week and even got a shout out from Elaine this afternoon! Apparently her brother is involved somehow too. We’re going twice, as I adore the score.

Yup, I was front row at the same matinee and it was indeed top notch amateur musical theatre and well worth the early start and late return so I also had a few hours exploring York. I travelled by train via London, Sheffield and Leeds which added an hour to the journey each way but the saving over the extortionate East Coat mainline prices more than covered the show ticket price |

Quick mention of an amateur musical I wouldn't have known about but for a mention by Elaine Paige a couple of Sundays ago as we were leaving for a holiday in the area. (well 75 miles away really but
that was close enough to go!)
At Huddersfield's Lawrence Batley Theatre, By George was set in a Yorkshire fish and chips shop and the local pub. It was unusual having been written by, and starring, a member of the company. Strong performances especially from the ladies, broad Yorkshire humour and some pretty good songs.

Anastasia at BritVic Theatre Ascot on 3 - 5 November ( Ocean Theatre Youth Group - is this a UK premiere ?)
Dames At Sea at Vale Theatre Northfleet Kent on 16-18 November.
Side Show at the CryerArts Theatre Carshalton Surrey on 25 -28 October.
I saw Ocean's My Fair Lady at Ascot last year and the young people played it too much for laughs in my opinion especially Henry Higgins. Hopefully Anastasia will be taken more seriously !

Good for them and thanks for the tip off. WBOS also performed Beautiful, the Carol King Musical earlier this month. I believe the York Stage production of Beautiful I saw last month was the first amateur production in the UK to reach the stage, but it could well be that West Brom scheduled that first and were leapfrogged. Will be interesting if that happens again with Love Never Dies. Unusually it opens with a Wednesday matinee, which I've just booked and got the last remaining front row stalls seat. The £4 booking fee on top of the £29.50 top price ticket seat is higher than most amateur shows but I'm sure it will be worth every penny. |

Earls Courtiers are presenting Sweeney Todd at Refettorio Felix (a Kensington drop in centre and community kitchen) from Tuesday - Friday 21 -24 November. The £45 ticket price includes "a 3 course michelin-star-style dinner with half a bottle of wine" as well as the show. Friday is already sold out.
Proceeds for charity and for the price it seems a very good deal. The Earls Courtiers' open air West Side Story in the summer was excellent.

Was at the closing night of Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group's Little Shop this evening, incredible as expected. EUSOG have always put on very strong productions that are very professional in standard.
Full standing ovation at the end and INSANE atmosphere in the venue.
