Chitty is very popular this year, that's at least the third I've seen listed in various places! Kinky Boots seems to be everywhere as well. Not that that's a bad thing 😁

On the other hand I've recently seen near- full houses at an Evita, Oxford Operatic Society are doing Evita at Oxford Playhouse this week (23-28th January) and it corroborates paul26's post - near-full house tonight and two of the shows are already sold out. (Great production by the way, would recommend if you're in the area.) I guess as it's a familiar name it sells better. |

Saw Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group's Jesus Christ Superstar at the Church Hill Theatre last night and absolutely loved it, production values were fantastic, easily one of the best amateur shows I've seen. This production has caught some attention for casting a non-binary Jesus and a female Judas, both of which were fantastic performers and really embodied their roles. Will keep an eye out for future EUSOG shows.

Saw Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group's Jesus Christ Superstar at the Church Hill Theatre last night and absolutely loved it, production values were fantastic, easily one of the best amateur shows I've seen. This production has caught some attention for casting a non-binary Jesus and a female Judas, both of which were fantastic performers and really embodied their roles. Will keep an eye out for future EUSOG shows. In terms of future shows, Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group bring a musical to the Edinburgh Fringe every year, usually for the first nine days of the festival at Paradise in Augustines on King George IV Bridge. Last year they did Curtains. Their 2017 production of Company was especially memorable. Always so much talent in their shows and excellent production values as you say. They consistently set an incredibly high bar for student theatre. Can't wait to see what they'll be treating Fringe audiences to this August! |

Their G&Ss are usually good too.
I did see something about Jesus being non-binary, all female apostles too I think. Was it "just" the actor was non binary, or was the character played as non-binary? "I Don't Know How to Love Them"?

I saw that last night. The cast(huge!) and staging were first rate but let down by the sound team. Many late mics throughout and some dialogue completely lost. It was sold as preview night so hopefully will be better for the rest of the run. |

They have a new home and kick off with the splendid Pal Joey. 19-29th April (note: Joey is not even slightly PC, but if you can cope with "Dolls", you should be able to live with "Mice".) www.towertheatre.org.uk/pal-joey/Pal Joey introduced me to Musical Comedy. In the summer of 1980 I went 5x to see Dennis Lawson and Sian Phillips. This has been top of my list of want to see's for many years. |

If anyone is trying to tick off the classics and can get to Lichfield before Saturday, the Garrick has Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. I saw it last night, obviously very dated but I thought they did a fantastic job. The two leads in particular have stunning voices.

Carousel at the Susie Sainsbury Theatre, Royal Academy of Music. Saw this today 6/7/23 afternoon. It is great I give it 5* good singing, music and dancing. Its only on until Saturday so please go. The cast are armatures but the direction and technical staff are professionals. It is one of the best shows I have seen even and so cheap. £20 plus £5 off if over 60. The theatre is modern and seats comfortable. There is a canteen in the basement for food and tea/coffee.

I'm travelling Kent to Lichfield on Saturday for Seven Brides.. so good to know it's a quality production. Not performed often these days, went all the way to Stockport to see it last year.
I'll add a recommendation for A Chorus Line at Erith Playhouse. Friday sold out but good availabilty Saturday evening (8pm, no interval) .
I was also at Thursday's Carousel matinee and I agree this is incredibly good. Should be noted though that it's performed by graduating students at a prestigious college so not strictly speaking amateur. There is a Sunday matinee but that's currently sold out with returns possible.

Yes full orchestra and overtures for both acts. The sound was superb. The whole thing was sheer class. I've seen a load of college musicals, including Mountview's excellent Carousel in 2022, and for me was the best ever so do hope you manage to get a ticket. Running time a full three hours. Thursday matinee was around 90% full. Only looked round briefly but I'd estimate about 20 empty seats including five in the (sold as restricted view but isn't) £10 front row. I asked at the box office about a Musicals Cabaret show at 5.45 on Sunday (sold out but was told to enquire about returns on the day) and the person in front of me was buying a ticket or two. |

This should really be in the College Productions thread, but there are a few empty seats tonight as well (for Carousel), including about 5 in the front row. I’d think that the odds of turning up and getting a ticket on Sunday are very good.
It’s such a joy to hear the music being played by this orchestra and with a respectful audience who don’t talk through the overture. I wish they hadn’t added a load of applause points in the middle of songs though (even using such tricks as dimming the lights to make people think the song is over).

Hi all
I'm an avid read here but never post, but felt had to share news of an upcoming production in Edinburgh of Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I was in rehearsals for a Fringe show I'm involved when the next group came in after. I've never heard HB (I know - a sin!) so I asked if I could watch their run through as a fellow performer.
Shivers, tears, gut punching. And this was all before mics, lights and costumes. I've looked them up, company called Captivate Theatre running five musicals the first fortnight of the Edinburgh Fringe.
Honestly amazing range of talent and from what I gather all local to Edinburgh/surrounding areas. If you're around for the Fringe, I'd definitely recommend.

90% of amateur musicals at the moment seem to be from a pool of about 20 with Legally Blonde, Shrek, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Addams Family and Kinky Boots currently the most chosen, but there are a few less travelled roads around.
Coming up are Sunday In The Park With George at the Yvonne Arnaud Guildford presented by Quick Fantastic from 13-23 September and Ushers (about theatre front of house workers) at the Guild Theatre Gravesend on 6,7,13 and 14 October.
