As a huge admirer and supporter of the high quality musicals staged by amateur groups around the UK, I'm keen to see as many as possible once they resume. Unfortunately a lot already rescheduled from last year are understandably being postponed again till 2022. I'm starting this thread to include any amateur musicals that are currently planned to run and open for bookings, up to the end of December 2021. Here are a few to start off. I ask members to post details of any others they may be aware of.....

Oklahoma! at Wakefield Theatre Royal - 25 August to 4 September 2021, rescheduled from 2020. 2.30pm matinees on both Saturdays. Priscilla Queen of the Desert - Newark Amateur Operatic Society. 12 to 16 October 2021, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. I've booked Working and ... Scoundrels. I saw Working at Southwark Playhouse in 2017. Don't remember it in detail but I scored it 9/10 at the time. The Bridewell/SEDOS has switched to allocated seating, used to be just in sections.
( and with thanks to TallPaul and cheap LNER advances I'm also going all the way from Kent to Wakefield to see Oklahoma!)

While looking for something else, I noticed that Summer Holiday is on at Mayflower Theatre on 27 and 28 August. 7pm on Friday, 1 and 5pm on Saturday. It's their youth group, like in Wakefield. Only £15 a ticket.

Little Shop of Horrors at Rotherham Civic Theatre. Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 September. LS Theatre Productions presents the South Yorkshire premiere of Kinky Boots at Barnsley's Lamproom Theatre. Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 October. Northallerton MTC's production of Joseph at Northallerton Forum. Monday 25 to Saturday 30 October. Rotherham MTC's production of Priscilla, also at Rotherham Civic Theatre. Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 November. Lamproom MTC also has a production of Joseph, at Barnsley's Lamproom again, funnily enough. Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 November. I'm off for a lie down in a dark room! |

I'd be interested in views about this scenario.
I booked an amateur musical, Thursday evening performance, for Spring 2020. The booking was made via a ticket agency , one used by many amateur groups. There was no obvious alternative way to buy a ticket though I now understand I could have done so through the musical theatre group, probably via Facebook. I don't use social media beyond this forum.
The show was first postponed to later in 2020 and then to September 2021. I was notified a few months ago of the exact dates and that my booking had been transferred to the new Thursday. I replied that I would not be able to attend then and would like to switch my booking to either the Wednesday or Tuesday evening, reply received that this would be arranged before the remaining seats were put back on sale.
I have now been notified that the amateur group cannot change my booking as I had bought my ticket through an Agency. I replied basically challenging this and here is the reply from the Agency to the amateur group and forwarded to me. The lady at the group dealing with the matter was very apologetic but says she can do no more so I don't want to go back to her.
"Firstly the customer will need to re-book and pay for the ticket they require. They will then need to email us with their original booking reference and their new booking reference, clearly indicating which set of tickets they need to cancel. Once we have received this information, we can then refund the original booking minus any delivery fees and including a £1 admin charge"
So the only way I can get a refund on my Thursday ticket is to buy another one and follow this process and even then I won't get the full amount back. I think that if a show is rescheduled to take place 18 months after the original dates full refunds should be readily available and exchanges of date cost-free. What if a ticket purchaser had moved or passed away? All I want is to switch the ticket from one performance to another, same show, same venue, same week.
The reply says this can be arranged over the phone but Before I call them I'd be interested in views about the legal position and what approach I should take.

I'd be interested in views about this scenario. Legally, your claim is going to be with the ticket agency. The show you booked for isn't going ahead, you can't make the new date, so you should be entitled to a full refund. (the fact you may then choose to book directly for another date is completely outside the discussion) If you're not offered a full refund, you could dispute this with your credit card company (depending on the original booking date - but a proviso is I tried this for a hotel booking last year when the hotel was closed due to Covid-19 and the company went out of business, but my credit card provider told me the claim was too late). You could also take the company to the small claims court (assuming they are based in the UK) and they would most likely be liable to cover the application costs. There is a small chance they have a term hidden away which says they can keep the booking fee. This shouldn't affect your consumer rights, but it's a small risk. Now, in reality, none of this is worth the hassle for the cost of a ticket to an amateur production. Firms like this one bank on this. If it was me, I would just tell the agency you can't make the new date, ask for the refund and write off the small difference in cost. You could even say you'll take a credit voucher if you plan to book through them again. Then, if you still want to see the show, email the amateur group and book through them. But keep both transactions completely separate. |

Matinees both days. Into the Woods - 14 to 18 September. Saturday matinee. Calendar Girls - 9 to 13 November. Saturday matinee. I've been searching through the websites of theatres I've previously visited, ticket agencies, and theatres in towns I've never been to in search of amateur musicals to see during 2022. Some shows crop up a lot - Kinky Boots, Calendar Girls, Kipps, Sister Act and Made In Dagenham for example are currently popular choices. I will try to post here details of anything more unusual.
Alan Menken's Hunchback Of Notre Dame by Colchester Operatic Society is at the Mercury Theatre from Thursday 27 January until Sunday 6 February, 12 performances altogether which is an unusually long run for an amateur production. I don't think that's been seen much in the UK and I missed the Manchester production in the summer.
I've booked that one, as well as Seven Brides For Seven Brothers at Stockport Plaza Theatre, 42nd Street at Redditch Palace Theatre, Titanic at Portsmouth Kings Theatre (all April) The King And I at Margate Theatre Royal and Carousel at Brentwood Theatre (both January), Oklahoma at Mansfield Palace Theatre (March), and Young Frankenstein at Romford Brookside Theatre (May)
Others I've found include Twisted at Brentwood in January, Rent at Cambridge ADC in February, Honk at Chelmsford in March and Curtains at Potters Bar / All Shook Up at Dartford / My Fair Lady at Ascot all in April and Sunset Boulevard at Kings Lynn in May.
