My non spoilery review. Attended today with a large amount of anticipation in tow. Both shows went off without a hitch (apart from a few dropped wands) and it seems to me like it's ready to open properly now, if it ever wasn't. I think I got more enjoyment from a technical level and general Potter geekery than I got enjoyment from the actual storytelling or emotional content but it's by no means an empty spectacle. The special effects are absolutely brilliant though. None of them are truly baffling but the right things are done in the right places, without too much reliance on projections. The cast are faultless, particularly Anthony Boyle as Scorpius, Noma Dumezweni as Hermione and Jamie Parker as Harry. Those three really win the audience over, even when the script isn't giving them as much as it could. I enjoyed the whole experience and I'm glad that "the Harry Potter play" didn't feel like a rip off, or a cynical attempt to do a bit more Potter. On the logistical end I didn't check my watch for part two but part one finished at 16.45. My tickets in the end never turned up so I was issued with a handwritten ticket at the box office with little fuss. Apparently I can return for a souvenir ticket in the future for my book, which is nice. The cast were also very prompt for my rare attendance at the stage door, they must have known I was keen to get home, bless 'em. Thanks for the review! Seems like the general consensus is that the play is a far better achievement in the technical side of things than in the actual storytelling of it. Very curious to form my own opinion. Finally seeing it next week! I don't know if this is the correct thread to ask but... I'm travelling to London for this and gonna stay there several days. If I could see one other show while in the city, which one should I try to get tickets for? |

Andrew, I saw the same show(s) as you on Sunday  I agree that it was an all around good experience. Personally I also enjoyed the story, but perhaps it was simply happiness to be able to return to the world of Hogwarts. It can defnitely stand on its own as a good tale and never once felt like "milking a franchise" or anything. |

Martin Lewis mentioned the Friday Forty on his GMTV (or whatever they call it now) slot the other morning as "a cheap way to see the show". I imagine that might've boosted demand today?

I have a little cousin who wants to see this.
I have no interest in the play, even though I actually really love the books.
If I was to enter the friday forty, can I give the tickets to someone else, or does it have to be who bought them? Thanks.

How little is little? There's some quite dark stuff in there - age recommendation on the show's website is 10 and up, which I'd say is about right.
Depends entirely on the child, of course, but I must admit the night I went, it was mainly teenagers and adults - I only spotted one child who I'd guess was 8 or 9.

Aside from the dark content it's quite hard to get an 8 year old to sit through effectively a 4 act play. Although I'm sure there are some 8 year olds who could, depends how stagey your child is.

Ugh. Terrible review on theatremonkey of one of our seats - TT 23 in the stalls. We have TT 23- TT 26 and now I'm quite worried (and annoyed we paid full price).

It's not *too* terrible, is it? He's coloured it red, but in the main page, he explains it's because it's beside the sound desk and you will be aware of it while you are sitting there?

Top Tips: Make your experience more bearable by considering that the sound desk operator might be even more irritated by being beside you. And remember to wear something that doesn't clash with the red seat. |

Yes, I was referring to the review from a patron who recently sat in that seat and had problems seeing the stage. Luckily, we have four people in our party ranging from 5'2" to 5'9" so I guess I'll stick the tallest (my husband) in TT 23 and hope for the best. He's already a little hesitant to spend one of our four days in London seeing a two-part show. Oh well. Maybe my plan to win the Friday 40 lottery that week will come true and I can give up two of our row TT seats!

I was online when the reviews started coming in and most of them are being very good with the whole spoilers thing. If you're still hoping to be unspoiled, then definitely the Guardian review and probably the Telegraph review and the Wall Street Journal review are ones to avoid, but then if you're still hoping to be unspoiled, I expect you won't be reading any of the reviews at all. But if you just can't quite resist, then most of them aren't going to tell you much except there are wizards being played by actors and some really impressive things happen on that stage.

I don't want to risk reading the reviews myself as I'm not in London until November to see the plays, but can anyone who has read them provide a summary of how Cursed Child scored? How many stars, positive/negative reviews, etc?

I don't want to risk reading the reviews myself as I'm not in London until November to see the plays, but can anyone who has read them provide a summary of how Cursed Child scored? How many stars, positive/negative reviews, etc? From what I saw, reviews are mostly positive, 4 and 5 stars, and the consensus seems to be that it's not perfect, but it's magical and mostly deserves the hype. |
