I just saw it! Here there are some thoughts. Ultimately I think it's nice, very enjoyable, but doesn't add anything to the original and it wasn't really needed in the first place {Spoiler - click to view}
Emma Watson is very, very pretty, but 90% of her acting was just her smiling and she sounds like a tin of tuna.
I really liked the scenes in the castle, Lumiere and Cogsworth looked amazing and Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen were great in their roles.
Luke Evans and Josh Gad stole the whole thing, with a special mention to Kevin Kline.
It's 45 minutes longer than the 1991 movie, they added songs, characters and stuff, but it only got wider, not deeper. They made some attempts to justify the Prince's behaviour, but it was meh. And there is this whole scene where Belle and the Beast are magically transported to Paris which is entirely mumble jumble.

How was Audra and Emma? Audra was amazing, she outsang everybody in the final scene. I just can't wait to see her in concert again! Emma was good but I had some issues with the title song, I didn't like the arrangements at all and it spoilt it to me. |

I just saw it too.
They've tried really hard with this, but ultimately it just falls flat as a comparison to the original. Perhaps it's an unfair comparison, after all the original is only one of three animated films to ever be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and the only one when they only had five nominees!
The visuals were good. Supporting performances were effective enough. Josh Gad brings some nice comedy to the role of LeFou. Luke Evans as Gaston is hands down the best part of this, I think that's the only casting that I would call perfect.
My favourite scene was the Gaston song and I enjoyed Be Our Guest a lot as well. The title song scene was a rollercoaster, it went from magical to cringey to magical to cringey.
Dan Stevens I thought was good as the beast but as soon as he turned back into a human the lack of chemistry with Emma was blatant.
Emma Watson is a lovely, intelligent girl who has the occasional charming moment. But the girl cannot act and she definitely cannot sing. Ultimately I think this film is ruined by her casting and I think it could have been ten times better with someone else in the role.

On a side note I also saw 'Get Out' and if any of you are into horror/thrillers, it's really exceptional. A much better movie than BATB.

Saw it this afternoon and absolutely loved it - brought back all the childhood nostalgia without ruining my memory of the original. I was very nervous going in but it exceeded my expectations in almost all ways (I won't mention the autotune...). Thought the gay themes that there's been all the hoo-ha about recently were actually very tasteful and subtle, it didn't feel shoehorned in to me. I actually didn't think any of the cast were weak, but I can understand why people are saying they're underwhelmed with Emma Watson's performance. I thought Belle was a much more genuine character in this than the original though. However, the music was definitely the best part - it sounded stunning and I thought the new material and alterations fitted well, with one exception that I'll put in a spoiler just in case:
Did they change the time signature of the title song? It sounded quite drastically different to the original, which I believe is in 4/4. I couldn't quite figure it out while watching so I'll listen to the soundtrack and try to make it out, but my thought is it's been changed to 3/4 to make it feel like a Waltz for the dance scene? I may be wrong though! Unfortunately it was quite distracting as it changed it felt like the rhythm of the lyrics didn't really fit. This is perhaps the most iconic song from the movie, so I don't think they should've messed with it as much as they did. Oh well, the magnificent additions to Be Our Guest and Gaston made up for it!

One thing I thought they really got wrong was the library reveal that Beast gives to Belle. One of my favourite scenes in the original animated film and here it was just completely underwhelming.

Luke Evans as Gaston is hands down the best part of this, I think that's the only casting that I would call perfect. Awards definitely to Luke Evans and Audra McDonald for singing all their parts unassisted by machine or ghost singers. I feel the credits should be twice as long as they actually are.. Really don't understand anyone who finds the new songs anything other than bland in music and trite in lyrics. In fact any scene or song that wasn't Howard Ashman's stuck out like a sore thumb (nice that they included some of his demo Gaston words though). I'd also question how involved Alan Menken was in the score as most of it was a pale shadow of his work on the animated feature. I'd agree that the whole thing was unnecessary and only The Mob Song and Gaston were worthy of the title. And even then that pointless dance interlude to warrant Anthony van Laast's office next to the producers definitely stole time from somewhere more deserving. Beautiful to look at. But souless.. A great advert for rewatching the cartoon though. |

Just seen the movie, and although I enjoyed it a lot, it made me want to rewatch the cartoon.
You just can't beat Angela Lansbury singing Beauty and the Beast.

I feel like the odd one out, but have just got back from seeing it tonight, and I LOVED IT. I even cried at the ending.
Luke Evans and Audra McDonald had the best vocals of the entire cast, but there was something about Dan Stevens that I just loved. I didnt see the point of the new soñgs apart from Evermore though. They just all seemed to be too short, compared to all the rest.
And I was one of the people who kept saying that Belle could not be played by Hermione Granger, as it just seemed so wrong. But I was pleasantly surprised by her. Yes her singing was the best, but I like it.

Saw it.
Thoughts (may be spoilers but I don't know and i don't care):
- Emma Watson was as bland as I expected. Can't sing, can't act. Just felt nothing from her performance. Sorry.
- Luke Evans steals the film from under everyone's nose as Gaston - dangerously handsome, and what a wonderful singing voice. Not as brutish a Gaston as the cartoon film, but has his own take on the role, and he's just perfection.
- Josh Gad also a little scene stealer as Lefou.
- Audra Audra Audra - nothing she can't do.
- Emma Thompson had the toughest job in the whole film I think, as Angela's performance as Mrs Potts is so indelible and beloved and iconic and everything else, not least that performance of the title song. But I think people will let Emma away with this one as she's such a national treasure.
- CGI especially with the Beast really annoyed me. It also makes it hard to connect with Cogsworth, Potts and Lumiere because they don't feel 'real'.
- Singing overall is appalling apart from Evans and Audra.
- Extra bits added to the film are totally unnecessary especially that silly Beast-Belle trip to Paris thing. Ridiculous.
- The pub scene/Gaston song is terrific. Be Our Guest is unforgettable. I think I fell asleep during it.
- The new songs are rubbish.
Overall 7/10
