Mat as well keep this the thread rather than start a new one... previews begin tonight for the Broadway production, anyone going soon? Heard there may be some changes with costumes and the like so excited to see what occurs.  I'm seeing it. Hope they put the turban back in...Norma needs her turban!! |

People speculated that there are new costumes. That picture of Glenn Close in a silk robe is actually one of the originals which was worn in the original Nunn run but not in the ENO revival. I believe it's the one she wears on the scene when she calls Betty ("hello, is this Gladstone 9821, Miss Schaefer?").

I read on another site that this is selling horrendously (like Bend It Like Beckham level bad). Interesting how popular it was here in comparison! A 16 week run on Broadway is quite different from 5 weeks in London. |

Ever since seeing this at ENO I have listened to the Broadway recording with Glenn.
Last night I thought I would put the World premiere recording on instead. I really do not like it. I hated some of the orchestrations and arrangements and really didn't like Patti LuPone.
To think this was all I used to listen to and loved it.

I honestly don't think there is a perfect, or even-semi perfect Sunset cast recording. The OLC is all over the place in terms of its recording quality and engineering, and it isn't the final draft of the show (not even the final draft in its original incarnation before it closed and re-opened in London. It's almost like they recorded it during previews when they weren't done with the changes even then).
Then there's the LA cast recording, which is really pretty much complete and has a solid cast, it doesn't have the best vocals with Glenn Close, and I don't think Alan Campbell made the best Joe.
I think there was a missed opportunity with not recording Betty Buckley and John Barrowman in a "New London" cast recording. I thought that was the best pairing of any of the leads anywhere. I never liked Elaine's Norma back then (fast forward 20 years later and I have a lot more respect), but I think recording her against Barrowman (or Alexander Hanson, who was also a great Joe) would have been great.
The German recording is pretty good I think, but it's not complete and it's not English. But Helen Schneider is fabulous and Uwe Kroger was bearable back in the 90s. I never really got into the Canadian cast recording until I listened closely last year, and I happen to love it. The leads are all pretty excellent, the recording quality is interesting because the orchestra sounds rather large. Though Diahann Carrol isn't much of a singer (and arguably worse than Close), I find her singing a lot more interesting and less grating than Close's head voice/chest voice flip flop.

By the sounds of audiences on other boards and twitter, the show went off without which bar a few tech issues. Glenn's voice was a bit rough but she acted amazingly and garnered a mid-show standing ovation, with the audience going crazy throughout! ... so not far off what happened here.  |

... so not far off what happened here She also missed shows here during only a 5 week run. She is doing 16 weeks on Broadway and will turn 70 during the run! It's a big ask doing that role 8 shows a week at that age. |

Its crazy! About 150 performances I believe. Her understudy Nancy Anderson has probably been pre warned at some point she will be on. |

I need to know if La Close wears the Turban...Norma without a Turban is like the Phantom without his mask....I loved it at the ENO but the lack of turban was alarming

I could swear I read on the Broadway forum that the red wig took over the turban. I agree, Norma with no turban is pants!

Glenn does wear a Turban in two scenes on Broadway. Saw it last night. She wears a black turban with the red kimono jacket and black pants during"The Ladies Paying" and also during "Eternal
youth Is Worth A Little Suffering." She wears all of the original costumes (at the ENO she only wore 4-5 of them).
Show is amazing. Very similar to ENO but tighter of course and GC's chemistry with Michael is even better.

Had a read up on BroadwayWorld and it is getting positive feedback
However Michael Xavier isn't getting the best world of mouth, they don't seem to be keen that he is British or he didn't climb out of the swimming pool.

showtoones, that dress always came with a red wig and without a turban.
Phantom, TBH people were very mixed in London about Xavier as well. He sang it fine, but he was way too hammy and jazz handy.

Agree about Xavier, good voice but too keen to be "likeable" in this and Joe isn't really very nice. Plus of course there must be lots of out of work Broadway actors who could have played the part - so there will be a little jealousy of a Brit coming over and doing it. But as we know Glen wanted him so being "likeable" actually paid off and he makes his Broadway debut. Good luck to him!
