Did they stock the mugs yet? When I went they had it listed but it wasn't delivered to the theatre yet. I'm gutted they weren't selling t-shirts. I went all merchandise nuts on this one, and I almost never do. They've got both types of mugs tonight, the orange one with the logo and the white one with all Norma's costume designs - both £10 each |

Has anyone sat in the £12 seats? What are they like? I saw this in one of the £12 seats in the Upper Circle (restricted view due a pillar). You lose a bit of the stage, but if you're willing to lean to the side and sit at a slightly awkward angle, you get a reasonable view. No real issues with blocking other people as this is on the outer aisle and the seats curve around. Can't complain at the price, especially as there's a vast difference in price between these and the other Upper Circle seat prices. Full disclosure - there were a few other empty seats around and I was able to move into another seat without a restricted view on this occasion, but even if I'd had to stay in the original seat, I'd have been perfectly happy for what I'd paid. |

I'd lost the email to print my ticket from and phoned the box office today,, ready to plead and sell my grandmother - but, oh my, the box office were friendly and helpful, and everything done and dusted with no fuss. Well done guys. A pleasure. And how different to some box offices.

Super show - loved Glenn Close, though there was a muck up of the last note I thought! Covered it with manic laughter!!
Was supposed to be in C56 in the Upper Stalls on Thursday night but got into my head I was going tonight and arranged travel that way... Managed to change the seat for tonight's performance and was given D57, which I felt was a better seat and avoiding the right curve of the circle and the wall of the box in front.
However, when the lights went down shuffled along four seats, had no one in front and a wonderful view! There were two rows at the side of the Upper Circle with no one say in them - maybe 20 or so seats.
The performances were uniformly superb. Loved Max and Betty. Joe was great too! But it is Glenn Close's show!
Enjoyed the story for the first time of viewing as well!

Yes I'd never seen it before. An interesting story. Not a fan of all the music at all. Glenn did struggle with the last note of 'With One Look' and again at the end of the show, but otherwise a brilliant performance. Such amazing acting.
The trunks were disappointing after all the hype haha, but Max, Betty and Joe were all fantastic.
I much preferred the second half and felt all the performers went up a gear.

Don't get the raves for this. Once was enough, and on the basis that the music seemed limited to three tunes repeated several times over (yes, we get it, everyone needs new ways to dream), I'd have to REALLY like any future cast to bother seeing it again.
Close is a great actress and, if curtain call is anything to go by, down to earth and great fun - but my word, she's no singer. I felt a bit uncomfortable when the actress playing the deluded ageing starlet has clearly been equally duped into thinking she can sing. She didn't just miss the last note of 'With One Look', she wavered on a couple in the middle, too. And let's gloss over some of the rest. Over the two and a bit hours, it meant I struggled to accept the character, sadly. (Not helped by the dozy pair sitting nearby who giggled their way through As If We Never Said Goodbye because they clearly thought it was so bad.) Audience reaction overall to her songs felt way, way over the top.
However, glad to see the talented fella playing Max was properly recognised. So the audience got something right. ;-)
I'd have to disagree that the trunks were disappointing. And I giggled when Joe appeared in his tux and a surprised but approving "whoo!" did a sort of vocal Mexican wave among the women sitting behind me...

Seen this twice now and I agree with most of the comments above.
I also agree with what has been said about Glenn - a wonderful performance with superb acting. But for me, the fact that she struggles with so much of the singing am afraid does not add to the realism of the character for me. ALW creates these scores to be sung. And for me LuPone, Buckley and EP were better in the role for that reason. I was a massive fan of LuPone back in the day. I appreciate she is an acquired taste, but I feel was the original and best Norma. Power vocals and totally intense and deranged by the end.
Still, the musical event of the year no doubt.
On another matter, does anyone think ALW has been exceptionally and unusually quiet about this production? With any revival he's always there to announce that the new version is perfect and how he always imagined it?! Weird!

Anyway, you're in the minority - thank gawd.
Another esteemed friend in last night, the legendary La Zink, who reported that La Close's presence elevated all the way to the Gods. She was profoundly moved by the performance - which anyone with a shed of intellect would be.

I agree, I was also there for a return visit last night and she did struggle with the vocals. As much as I love her portrayal of Norma, it did distract somewhat as I found myself willing her to hit the notes which took away part of the enjoyment of the overall performance. It's not stopping me from going back to see it again, I've loved this show since I first saw it as a 16 year old during the original West End run, but last night there were some issues. |

Towards the end of the show, a man in the audience (not sure what level, as I was in the top balcony and couldn't see) began to yell something along the lines of, "Excuse me! I have a question! Is Glenn Close on stage?! I came to see Glenn Close!" The ushers on my level all rushed to the sides to see what was happening, but it seemed to get taken care of quickly and the show wasn't stopped at all. Still thought it was strange...

Maybe the vocal demands are proving too much for GC. I saw the show last & this week. She certainly sounded better last week. If it is a case of diminishing returns will she make it to the final week. Out of interest if the Understudy is likely to go on will this be announced in the ENO website? Or is it a case of finding out on arriving

Finally saw this Saturday afternoon. Beautifully, beautifully directed - loved the "Perfect Year" and montage staging. Thanks to whoever suggested the limited edition print, too. Exquisite souvenir. I got 76 / 100, so my guess is they must sell about 5 per show. C29 stalls. You miss only a bit of the Desmond balcony, but at the end, if she stands in the wrong place, a couple of lines come from behind a pillar. Still, great value seat. My daughter bought the last signed print tonight. All gone. Think they seriously underpriced them, as they're only half way through the run. Also ran out of mugs after their delivery yesterday!. ENO are missing out on a fortune here! Stalls D1-2 a great deal at the price. At the interval I asked the house manager to have someone keep an eye on the row behind as there had been some commotion. Moved us to Box D. Now that was the perfect seat. Wonderful customer service. He also spoke to the noisy folks asking them to be respectful! |
