Kennedy Centre has announced Chess for the spring with Raul Esparza as Freddie, Karen Olivo as Florence, Ramin Karimloo as Anatoly and Ruthie Ann Miles as Svetlana. Beat that London! And a new book.....

Shouldn't be that difficult. None of them are household names - none are known outside of Broadway except Ramin. The ENO will need to be batting higher than that, based on their previous shows.

Among the MT fans who would be interested in Chess all four are well known in the US - Olivo for In The Heights and West Side Story, Miles for The King And I (Tony Award) and At Long Last Love. Esparza, an established Broadway leading man (Company, Leap of Faith) and a TV regular, has done a number of things in Washington - Georges in Sunday in the Park and Charlie in Merrily among them. This is a very strong cast indeed.

I don't know if they were all involved but Esparza was workshoping the new book version a few months back in NY. It's a good job I'm unemployable, if I had a proper job I'd be making an irresponsible decision to fly to D.C for this.

In that case whoever they come up with is going to be a huge disappointment for somebody. I'd much prefer folk that can sing and act the parts rather than the likes of Kat'nAlfie what ruined Carousel last year.

Musical theatre stars don't put bums on seats at the ENO. All their previous productions were sold on the likes of GLenn Close, Alfie Boe, Emma Thompson, Katherine Jenkins - people with high media profiles. Like it or not.

That doesn't mean you always get a good show though, does it? Hence the disappointment.

Besides Karimloo, I doubt any of the three other leads would transfer, despite how amazingly talented they are.
Raul has been in tons of Broadway plays and musicals. Most notably he's been in the revival of Company, Leap of Faith and Taboo (Tony nomination). He's also played the Arbiter in the Actors Fund concert of Chess done in the US some years ago.
Karen Olivo is fantastic. She's been in In the Heights, Tony Award winner for West Side Story as Anita, Tick Tick Boom and recently Angelica in Hamilton in Chicago. I saw her in Hamilton and she is a stunning performer. She is technically retired from "Broadway" and lives in Wisconsin but she does shows in the midwest and occasionally short-term gigs like this Chess concert which will be four days only.
Ruthie Ann Miles..Here Lies Love and King and I revival.
It's a power cast without any doubt, but I also have doubts they'd transfer this as the ENO cast.

Nicole Scherzinger and Ramin Karimloo would not surprise me. Alongside either Alfie Boe or maybe Josh Groban again

She played Maureen, and she was sensational.

So was Idina Menzel in that role but she was awful in Chess as Florence! Scherzinger, on the strength of the performance I saw, is a much, MUCH better singer than Idina Menzel. Granted, that's not a high bar, but she was genuinely very good. Menzel screeched, as she does in nearly everything.

Someone round here must know what’s going on, it’s ridiculous. If they do, and they want to be anonymous feel free to PM me and I’ll spill the beans on your behalf 😆
