They might well and I'm generally not a fan of modern pop sounds (I'm old) but I find both Jamie and Eugenius more melodic and catchy than DEH, which often sounds overamplified and just noisy. I can't really put it in words, it's just how I feel about the music. How can you explain why one singer/band appeals to you and another not entirely different singer/band appeals not at all? Jamie also has more "typical" musical sounds, like both of the Mom's big ballads "If I met myself again" and "My Boy" which I both love, and the quiet but oh so lovely "It means beautiful". The only quieter tone I can detect in DEH is - as I mentioned "So Big/So Small" when it's finally just a lovely melody and voice. I've been told that DEH doesn't sound quite so overamplified in the theatre, which is one of the things I want to check on. Another thing is simply that Jamie fells like these typically British small shows that just keep plugging on and do good business based on word of mouth, whereas DEH feels so massively overhyped - I am not saying it's a bad show, I just don't think it deserves the adoration it gets, because there's so much potential for it to be better in the way it tells its story or could polish the music and lyrics. When it comes to Jamie, I simply have no idea how it could be bettered, it's just a little gem as it is. (I'm leaving Eugenius out here, because a) the story is quite different from Jamie and DEH and not half as seriously and b) the music is consciously 80s pastiche, which appeals quite a lot to this 80s gal). I feel the same way. When talking about melody, I just don't get it from this (or Come From Away and Waitress). I find them bland and don't get that feeling you can't describe that touches you. I know that people DO get that from DEH though and that's great. Music is such a personal thing that you can't often describe in words. Anyway, glad this is coming over. Compared to Waitress and CFA I would be interested in seeing it to see what I am missing. (Hamilton was the same, I wasn't, and am still not, a huge fan of the music - I never listen to the CD - but seeing it live I did at least get what people love about it). I will say though, shows in America do get "hype' that gets out of control and eventually is much bigger (unrealistically) from the product. We shall see! They've picked a far more sensible theatre than Waitress and am sure the first year will sell out from the love in the musical theatre community. Whether Joe Public then take to it to sustain it through a cast change time will tell! |

Feel like I was the only one not thrilled to see this show being confirmed for the West End haha. Excited for anyone who is a fan to be able to see it at a more affordable (hopefully...) price, but for me I was severely let down by this show when I saw it on Broadway.
I'd heard Waving Through a Window beforehand but apart from that, no spoilers, and I've never left a show feeling so disappointed and also angry? There's no doubt some of the songs are fab, and on a bad day I will absolutely bawl at So Big/So Small but apart from that... Interested to see how audiences over here will react to it.

Glad I’m not the only one! I do enjoy the cast recording, mostly Evan’s solos and So Big/So Small, but I seriously struggle to accept some of the plot and overall it has too much of a pop feel for me in places which I suppose is just due to Pasek and Paul’s style |

Saw someone on a facebook page suggest Durone Stokes for Hansen. I can see it. Durone would be amazing. I don't rate Bayer. I haven't seen him on stage, but all of the recorded footage of him (whether it be West End Live or the DEH video he has on Twitter), his voice just sounds so wingey. Really grates on me  |

I just can’t see them casting a blond white boy to play Evan here, regardless of how talented he is (or isn’t). I can, considering the role always felt white and suburban to me. However I don't think they will simply because they've put it out there and said it's a possibility. I don't think they'll say something like that and then cast a white kid. |

I find posting “omg I want the part” much less unprofessional than posting “those who post how they want the part are wrong”. First is smth I can relate to. The second I would discuss in private. Being a naive dreamer is better than being a bitchy colleague Couldn’t have said it better myself. I was totally shocked by Mr Baker’s comment. I’m surprised he still has a job. Unbelievably juvenile. I feel sorry for Mr Bayer, however I am sure he has a great support network. I think what made it worse was all of Mr Baker’s friends chiming in with catty responses. I guess he is a little too good at playing the bully role and can’t switch it off. |

Everyone knew who he was talking about. I think he was trying to, very underhandly, take the mick out of Bayer but he’s just ended up making himself look like a complete tit. People seem to be making a lot of assumptions and having outrage on peoples behalf when actually they don't know any of the facts and don't know the people involved. We have no clue about their relationship with eachother or other cast members, what they are like behind the scenes, what was actually meant by the tweet and if it was a direct dig at someone or something more over arching.....we know nothing about the situation. This is a situation between two strangers, it is none of our business, they are the only people who know anything, let them deal with it themselves and let's get back on to the topic of actual DEH. |

Let's get back to DEH.
I wonder if they'll have an alternate Evan? It's a hugely demanding role, and if they cast a younger actor (e.g. Luke Bayer, or someone fresh out of college), they may not be trained fully enough to learn how to handle it.

I'd imagine matinees, or weekday evenings and Saturday matinees as scheduled shows for the alternate, similar to other shows e.g. Miss Saigon.

I feel very strongly about there being an alternate - seeing The King and I last week gave me some perspective on how much MT has changed over the decades. Whilst all of the roles in The King and I are no mean feat and I thought the quality of the show was one of the highest I’ve seen for a long time, the reality is that these roles and many shows of its era are justiable to be performed 8 times a week with no real difficulty by any seasoned professional - but a show like DEH and many other modern shows (ie Wicked, Dreamgirls) put so much more physical and emotional pressure on its lead roles than most ‘traditional’ shows. Therefore it’s completely justifiable to have someone on hand (not just an understudy) to take some of the pressure off. There was a debate on this board earlier this year on the subject of alternates and some people believed that if the actor can’t handle 8 shows a week they should “choose a different profession” - but the physical (including singing) and emotional commitment is different from show to show and I truly think alternates should be considered for roles like Evan to maintain quality and consistency on stage but also for the actors’ well-being.

Wicked has standbys for the two principal roles, and Bayer recently became the official alternate in ETAJ and Dreamgirls has a team of 3 Effie Whites as well as a standby.
Some of the vocal, physical and emotional stuff Evan does is insane and seems impossible to sustain 8 times a week without some kind of vocal or emotional problems arising. 6 times a week seems much safer for this role.
