Apparently they are only seeing people from the Royal for this... I would assume for ensemble and understudies for the leads. I would imagine the auditions for Henri, Adam, Milo, Mme Baurel and their understudies would be open to actors |

Top hat isn't Gershwin The west end needs a classy old school musical like this, I'm just not sure there is enough of an audience for this one in such a large theatre I'm not sure it qualifies as an old school musical. it's a conversion of a film whereas something like Carousel would be bang on the money. There are lots of old school musicals which I'd like to see and when Chichester can get back to them then great. |

This is an enjoyable show and will tick the boxes for the couple on a date audience market. However, as a show, it is not strong enough to sell out. My main issues with this show are the plot and themes. Act Two becomes a tad mundane, however it is rescued by a 10 minute dance number (they literally have nothing else to fill act 2 with). The book starts out strong but quickly descends into reeling off gags instead of developing characters. The setting and staging are beautiful - a West End audience would definitely appreciate this aspect of the show. As for the dance, objectively it is great - however I've never been one for dance; so I guess I'm a tad skewed in my opinions. The cast are all excellent. Gershwin's music is undervalued I feel, mostly in Act 2 - "But Not For Me" for example. My main issue with this musical is I feel it has no sense of integrity - it feels very commercial dressed up to be beloved tradition and sophistication; it just doesn't ring sincere to me... (can anyone who has seen the show agree with me here?) That's why I describe it as enjoyable instead of engaging.
When I say I have an issue with the themes, I mean I think they hit a lot better with an American audience than they would a British audience. The book could do with some grit every now again (ie: be less implicit about Henri's homosexuality), although I appreciate this is just my personal taste, and others would find that kind of dialogue overblown.
I'm glad it's coming. It's great to see a new musical that cherry picks the history of the American Musical/Dance without feeling too boring/cliched. I doubt it will last, but I could be proved wrong - what with the success of Top Hat.

I think the story isn't the strong point of the show. And I don't like the changes they've made but I get why they made them.
However, the dancing is just beautiful. And both Leanne Cope and Robert Fairchild are stunning. I've seen the show three times on Broadway. It's just one of those I can completely lose myself in because I adore the music and the dancing.
I'm thrilled it's coming to London with Leanne and Robert (my bank account, not so much)

I must say, I am rather looking forward to this. I am not sure why, as I don't know much about it, but the clips from Broadway look beautiful! As with Show Boat, I am starting this thing where I don't look into shows before I see them so I am surprised (or disappointed) haha and this is one that I am rather looking forward to based on the tiny things I have heard!  |

Well I saw this on Broadway back in febuary and really enjoyed it. I'm so happy it is coming to London as it is a great show and I think who the people who are a bit worried about it should not be. This show is filled with s'wonderful songs, incredible dancing and everything about it was super . I hope it does well over hear but we can only wait and see.

I agree this is a great show. I loved it on Broadway. I've said it before: Leanne Cope and Robert Fairchild opening the show in the West End makes me happy. They are both wonderful.

Well by the time September 2017 they would of both played the roles for about 2 1/2 years (well Leanne, Robert has left already!). But with the closing on Broadway now being brought forward to October 9, at least it will give Leanne more time to get refeshed and rested! |

I'm very happy to see Ashley Day bagged a big role. I saw him as Elder Price in BoM a few years ago and thought he was fantastic. I had absolutely no desire to see American in Paris again since it bored me silly in New York, but I guess now I need to reconsider and catch it again once Day has taken over next summer.

I saw Ashley Day in BOM too, he was in the Oklahoma tour last year as well and he was excellent. Will definitely be catching this if he is in it

Reviving this thread now rehearsals have started! Just noticed they are selling the Circle for opening night, so bagged myself one of the £32 tickets - green on theatremonkey so hoping it's not too badly restricted! PS theatremonkey, your site currently says this show opens 1 April, but they seem to have brought opening night forward to 21 March according to their website |
