The show is clearly beloved and the love and excitement was palpable in the audience. I was just gratified to see large groups of people enjoying themselves, (and some common sense at last as around half the audience decided to ditch the mask) Honestly, this was the one negative for me during my visit on Sunday and I highly disagree with you that ditching the masks right now in confined spaces with no social distancing is "common sense". Some people may not be convinced about the effectiveness of masks, but I just will never understand the issue with putting a light piece of fabric over your mouth and nose for a couple of hours if there's even the slightest chance it could stop someone else getting sick. What? Forever?

What? Forever? Of course not forever. That's why I specifically used the words right now in my response. Please don't twist my words to try and make out I said something I didn't. Back to Joseph, I just watched some clips of the 1972 version on YouTube and it’s quite the transformation it’s gone through since then. Do any posters remember the reaction to the 1991 version at the time? We’re there any purists who hated it? It must have been quite a departure from what had gone before between the arrangements and the female narrator. But that’s obviously now seen as the definitive version that most productions are descended from.

This is makes me nervous . I can’t see anything sensible atall about removing their masks fgs. If I was in that audience i would’ve got up and left But accept that's YOUR issue. The law has changed. Things have moved on. Finally I think maybe you're not aware of (or are choosing to ignore) the current government guidelines, which state: So yes, the law has changed. But it's still as much your issue as it is isabel's, mine, and everyone else attending a theatre because according to the government's own wording you are expected to wear a face covering in enclosed spaces, to protect others. There's not really a debate to be had about that - they're the rules as set out on the government's website, so I think people like isabel and myself are entitled to be annoyed if others don't stick to those rules potentially ( potentially) risking our health. When the rules change, hopefully because of positive scientific data, and hopefully soon, then things can move on further. Apologies to others that this thread has taken a bit of a tangent from Canaan!

It must have been quite a departure from what had gone before between the arrangements and the female narrator. But that’s obviously now seen as the definitive version that most productions are descended from. The 1982 Broadway production (transferred from 1981 off-Broadway) is more the template for current productions/script - though I'm not saying there haven't been further additions since. 1982 Broadway introduced the prologue (You Are What You Feel), and the wonderful late Laurie Beachman redefined the Narrator as a female powerhouse role. All of that hadn't been seen in the West End until 1991 though. I don't think any purists existed really, as it had changed so often it's hard to know what to be purist about. Actually, I'll contradict myself - having grown up with the original 1969 recording (with flavours of The Byrds and others in the arrangements) I didn't like the 1991 synthetic sound, which to me sounded dated in their attempt to be contemporary.

Great atmosphere tonight, slightly marred by someone a few rows behind us who was busy enlightening us all with a running commentary through the whole show. Despite being repeatedly told to shut up by people around him he didn’t take any notice.
Anyway, so lovely to be in for a fully house, when I went a couple of weeks ago it was still socially distanced.

Just got an email telling me lots of performances all tickets[ except premiums] at £25. I've succumbed to see this again from 2nd row central stalls.

I just looked up the 1982 Broadway production on YouTube. Wow. Beechman was incredible in that production. Here's the cast medley (I guess the 1982 equivalent of the megamix ) at the Tony Awards. It's insane in the best way. Such a stark contrast to any previous renditions of the role and the musical as a whole, or at least any I can find online. The early productions always come across a bit twee and stuffy looking back . I'd always assumed the 1991 West End production was the one which set the modern template everybody knows and loves, and whilst I think that's certainly true from the point of view of the modern styling and orchestrations, you're totally right that that version itself owed a lot to the 1982 Broadway revamp.

Jason Donovan's bow is AFTER Jac Yarrow's?? Much bigger star... He may be a bigger star but he is arguably the weakest member of the cast. His Pharaoh was underwhelming, could barely understand a word he said.

Me neither, checked all the Linzi dates and a few others too I found the link in e mail about other shows. Have had a look and it's certain dates only but, unfortunately, none of them are Linzi dates. Still it's a bargain if you want another visit which I may well do so.

Jason Donovan's bow is AFTER Jac Yarrow's?? Much bigger star... Well, yes, but I think if I were him, I'd show a bit of humility and say: No, Jac, you should come on after me. Also, any time I've seen him on stage, he's been mediocre at best: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the original production of Joseph. I'm a bit bemused that he's getting such good reviews for this.
