He may be a bigger star but he is arguably the weakest member of the cast. His Pharaoh was underwhelming, could barely understand a word he said. I don't disagree - I think he's an embarrassment compared to the other talent on stage, but he is cast as a star rather than for talent.

He's up there for sentimental reasons more than anything else - a nod to '91 (even more so now with Linzi).
I thought he was awful too, but it's 10 mins and he's the bigger name (Joseph really does feel like a supporting character in this production!)

Well, yes, but I think if I were him, I'd show a bit of humility and say: No, Jac, you should come on after me. Also, any time I've seen him on stage, he's been mediocre at best: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the original production of Joseph. I'm a bit bemused that he's getting such good reviews for this. Is he? I saw this last time out with my best friend (RIP) and she was a huge Jason fan. Even she admitted she couldn't make out a word he said. I've seen him in loads - Sweeney Todd, Chitty (he did this weird stuttering thing to make the part his own and seem "quirky"), The Sound of Music (this was particularly awful), Rocky Horror and several others I can't recall right now. The only time I've thought he was great was in The War of the Worlds where he basically only has one song and about 15 minutes of stage time, but smashed it, to be fair. He's a solid hand and a good working professional but I'm amazed he still takes such high billing. He's a Gary Wilmot or Peter Polycarpou for me - always nice to see him but you never come away wowed. He's the McDonalds of musical theatre for me, Clive - enjoyable enough at the time but a little unsatisfying at the end.

Jason Donovan is a name and can barely hold a tune. Peter Polycarpou is a theatre professional with a great voice and acting chops. They're in different leagues.

I saw him in Annie Get Your Gun opposite Emma Williams. “Anything You Can Do” had an unintended irony when it came to sparring over their singing skills.
I thought he was rubbish in Priscilla too. Sorry.

Sorry. I really liked Duncan James in that. Lovely bloke too. yep Duncan was far superior in Priscilla. I'll never forget seeing JD in the Rocky Horror show when he was so bad that the audience interaction was actually them shouting his lines to him as he couldn't remember them.

Jason Donovan was so dreadful in Priscilla. Shameful considering how amazing Tony Sheldon was. Felt embarrassed they had to share the same stage.

I deliberately waited to see Priscilla until after Donovan had left.

I didn't think he was that terrible and I didn't get to see Tony Sheldon, sadly. Duncan was far better though. I thought he still looked a professional standard actor, it wasn't like Caprice in Rent Remixed, which was like someone just wandered in off the street. She even mimed.
Sorry to go O/T, but while we're on shocking performances, Paul Nicholas in "Jekyll and Hyde" and Marti Pellow in everything I've seen him do.

Badly behaved audience or a genuine interval filler?

Feel like this is just gonna be anticlimactic now after the 24 hour build-up but ANYWAY…
Almost as soon as the curtain came down after Go Go Go Joseph, I hear a young lady a few rows behind complaining VERY loudly about the aspects of the production she was dissatisfied with. “Why was Alexandra Burke playing all the parts, why were there kids playing brothers and cooks, this is not like when I saw the film 10 years ago, why was Alexandra singing everything in lowered keys” and all of this loud enough that half the stalls must have heard. She went on to say “Alexandra has only been cast because she was on X Factor and I’m fuming, no wonder Alex (I’m guessing an actor friend of hers) can’t get any work if they’re hiring kids to play half the roles. Everyone in this audience is being mugged off by this subpar production, it’s ridiculous, we’ve all paid £70 and I’m fuming”. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I’d got my tickets for a tenner on O2 Priority LOL. She kept saying how Alexandra wasn’t fit to play the role and had had the keys lowered for her (can’t even imagine how she would have reacted to Sheridan!) I know many board members have basically said almost all of these things at one time or another both before and after seeing this version of Joseph but of course there’s a huge difference between saying it on a theatre discussion forum and screaming it at the actual theatre in front of fellow audience members, ushers, production staff and possibly even family of cast members! Most of us sitting nearby just sat in stunned silence, I was laughing nervously and just didn’t know where to look. Judging by the nervous laughs from her family or whoever was at the show with her and their lack of surprise at her outburst, I think she was probably neurodivergent. I don’t know enough about autism/asperges to know for sure but I know that some neurodivergent individuals are very dependant on having a routine and things being a certain way so I guess seeing a production so drastically different to the Kenwright production and the film probably threw her? I’m not saying it’s an excuse for her outburst of course but it probably goes some of the way to explaining it? There was definitely no excuse for her dropping an F bomb in the middle of an audience full of kids though, that’s where it really got nasty 😬

^ That is unfortunate.
What did you make of the show?

I remember a sort of similar event in the Les Mis staged concert first time around when a 'lady' shouted Where's Alfie? at John Owen Jones as Alfie Boe wasn't on that night. She was raging at the box office and was so rude.

As someone who has Aspergers myself, what you described those have the telltale signs on that condition. Of course autism is different with every autistic individual, but there are those who stick to strict routines. She may have been so used to seeing the Donny Osmond film that when she saw this production, it may had triggered her OCD? And the fact that she said it loudly is probably due to her lack of awareness. I know I used to be the same, although not to that extent! In fact I still get iffy when I hear a long-running show is getting changes *cough* Les Mis *cough* Phantom *cough* but I try to be more open minded and waiting to judge when I see the show with my very own eyes. But I agree that dropping the F bomb whilst kids are around is uncalled for, but that may be due to her lack of self-awareness.

That's totally out of order, she doesn't sound "right". When I hate a show that much I either leave, or drink two large sauvignons and take another in with me.

She was really quite agitated that night, having bought a new two piece & “matching” boob tube to try and draw Alfie’s eye. She wears it to Christenings now…well ‘a’ christening. They don’t get asked to much.
