Just announced, a co production with the hippodrome Birmingham. Only a 4 week run in all between both venues though so not sure how fully staged it will be? Opens in June.

I imagine pretty fully staged, especially if they're co-producing with Birmingham Hippodrome? I'm looking forward to it, although its only been 2 years since I saw it on Broadway. Be good to see a different take on it

Hope the casting is good for this. TCP is my favourite book, I read it when I was 13 and since reading it 5 times, the story moves me so much. I remember first discovering the musical and crying my eyes out at the finale, the lyrics at the start of the song are the same as the end of the book! Beautiful show

I loved it when I saw it on Broadway a couple of years ago (having missed it at the Menier), but it will have to be pretty special casting to top Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks for me...

I think for me the Doyle version is 'definitive' for now- by which I mean for me definitive, having seen such a great production I don't need another one so soon. Personally as well I think the Doyle-approach fixed some of the flaws in the musical as written.
That said it's an incredibly powerful story so I'm glad it's being staged. Also I believe it's still an A level text, and I'm sure the musical would be an incredible version for students to see.

Be good to see a different take on it For me, I’d rather not see another production so soon after the seeing the incredible Broadway run. Whilst I have no doubt the Curve’s production will be great, like Emi, I don’t want to revisit a new version just yet. |

I don't think they can top Doyle's production - I agree that its pretty definitive Em. And there's no way of topping Cynthia as Celie, she really defined that role for pretty much all future productions. (also she's a lunatic on Twitter - I just like bringing up)

I wonder why the very short run though? Just 2 weeks at Curve and 1 week in Birmingham. Are they maybe trying it out for a tour later on or something perhaps?
Compare this to most sit down Curve productions which usually run for at least two months and even the tours that launch there stay about 3 weeks.

Honestly I know very little of this show other than the revival on Broadway and Cynthia playing a lead role, even though I'm not much of a fan of her as she's a complete diva on social media.
I'll do a bit of research and then the 'dream cast' the roles.

It'll be interesting to see a new approach. I've seen all three incarnations, the original on tour (horrible), Menier and Broadway (excellent). It would be good if this production uses Doyle's abridged version but a different design. The original one was just way too perky and glib.

I imagine it will be a while, I’m still waiting on casting for their production of this year’s White Christmas. Dan Burton is in White Christmas. It was announced at the Curve 10th Birthday concert on Sunday. Well, all but announced. He was a performer and they introduced him as staring in one of Curve's big musicals coming up and i can only assume WC given that casting for On Your Feet is probably a way off yet. ETA: They actually are about to announce next years xmas production sometime within the next couple of months. I don't know what it is but they seem very excited to have the rights for it, whatever it is. Oh and some other info on TCP is that they actually signed on to do this three years ago, so actually before the broadway production even happened. From what i gathered they seem to want to create a bit of a link between Broadway and Curve and i wouldn't be surprised to see Curve become a bit of a home for the less obvious transfers that probably aren't going to really make it in London. I know OYF wasn't the only one they had meetings about in NY and they were there again just recently looking into more. |

My only experience of The Color Purple ks the concert version that was on in London about a year ago. I had wanted to see it on Broadway but it closed before I got there. So I am considering going to the Birmingham show and taking my mother as she really wanted to see it too.
Can anyone recommend good seats at the Hippodrome? What's the rake like?
