Ill be interested to see who gets cast.
Say what you want about Cynthia Erivo (and I'm with the thousands who call her out for being the lunatic she is) but she is definitive as Celie.

Saw Erivo twice. Stunning beyond words ... both acting and singing.

My only experience of The Color Purple ks the concert version that was on in London about a year ago. I had wanted to see it on Broadway but it closed before I got there. So I am considering going to the Birmingham show and taking my mother as she really wanted to see it too. Can anyone recommend good seats at the Hippodrome? What's the rake like? Their website has a handy view from seat guide. If I remember correctly the rake doesn't really kick in until row E or F in the stalls. I like the stalls at the Hippodrome and regularly sit anywhere in the central seats from front row until about row G with no grumbles.

Booked for this yesterday at the Hippodrome, pleasantly surprised at top price of £43. Waiting for cast announcement, Errivo would be nice but somehow i doubt it.

Find someone fresh is what I say. It has a new young emerging director, go that way with the cast too. Find new stars not bring people like Erivo or Wallace in.

I agree. Apart from the fact that I don't like Cynthia Erivo, at a time when there is discussion about opportunities available for BAME actors going on, rather than shipping out the same old face they should be giving an opportunity to another new actress instead.

Cynthia wouldn't play at the Curve now that she went to Broadway, her ego is too big for that.
Dean John Wilson had a lucky escape.

I don't really mind who they cast. Yes it would be lovely to give a platform to a new rising star but as long as they can sing the crap out of 'I'm Here', then all is good with me 😀

She is brilliant but i see her more as a Shug? And whether she would leave Hamilton in the west end, where she gets on quite a bit, to do a 4 week run in this, i;m not sure.

This doesn’t open until next year and I presume they’ll be a cast change for Hamilton in November/December as there usually is after a show has done a year? Unless she stays in the cast, she’ll be free. Can definitely see her starring in this unless she takes over Angelica permanently as she does get on as one of the 3 sisters regularly

If Miriam leaves Hamilton - and I suspect that unless she's given either Angelica or Eliza on a permanent basis she will - I'm pretty sure that she'll be inundated with offers of roles. I know at least two producers who are actively looking for/developing work for her. So while she'd be great in The Colour Purple whether two weeks in Leicester and a week in Birmingham would fit in with any other things she might have on the horizon - only time will tell.

Seyi played Nettie in the concert version a couple of years ago and she was excellent. I can't say i see her as Celie? She reads very young (and is young?). Also, forgive me as i can't remember, but is Shug supposed to be quite a lot older than Celie? Because Joanna Francis is and reads a lot older than Seyi as Celie. There's some very recognisable names in there. You know for some reason i kept thinking that Karen Mav could be cast as Sofia so that's about the first time i predicted a casting right!

Yeah, she is definitely supposed to be closer in age to Mister than Celie.

Also looking at the actress to play Nettie, she looks older than Seyi, which is odd if she's playing Celie's younger sister. Seyi looks a bit young to play Celie to me from what I've seen. I'm sure it will look fine in the production though.

This is a great cast; familiar with Joanna Francis, Karen Mav, Ako Mitchell and the fabulous Simon-Anthony Rhoden. Is there any talk of it making its way to the West End?

I think she is, yes - certainly Heather Headley and Jennifer Holliday on Broadway played a lot older than Cynthia! That's probably because they are both a lot older than Cynthia - Heather Headley is 13 years older and Jennifer Holliday is 27 years older. Jennifer Hudson was closer in age to Cynthia when she played Shug though (she's only 3 years older).

I remember her being fabulous but that is very young.

I remember her being fabulous but that is very young. Yes she played Nettie at the Cadogan Hall concert. Indeed she was great in that role and i thought she was a star. She does seem very young for the part until you consider that the story stars with Celie at 14 and i think the first act ends with her in her early 20's. The problem is that it follows hers life right into her 40's and with no will in the world can Seyi look in her 40's. Though Cynthia doesn't either but can pull it off better than Seyi i think. Actually when you think about it it's kinda strange they don't have different actresses for young/old Celie because the story spans such a long period of time. How can you expect one actress to be a believable 14 year old and 40 year old in the same show? Unless of course this production is doing something different and maybe bringing the age and time period down.

I'll be interested in this production. I don't think it will be what people are expecting. The director is very young and known for quite concept modern plays and the design team also very modern and concept. She has said in interviews that it's going to be a bit that way but also she wants it to feel more like the book.

At the risk of being the only one posting in this thread LOL.....
Something big is kicking off regarding the casting of Seyi Omooba in the role, after a facebook post from 5 years ago has been brought up by some fellow actors of her speaking out against homosexuality. I'm wondering where this is going to end up....

She'll have to leave. Give it a few days and she'll withdraw. The backlash on this is gonna be MASSIVE
