The bbc doesnt do adverts and has to be careful about appearing too commercial so they would at best get one performance on the strictly results show. To cash in on Strictly theyd have to pay out for their own newspaper and online advertising.
The movie was a surprise hit as a low budget australian movie at a time when most movies came from hollywood but it wasnt grease or the like

Strictly Ballroom is young, fresh, funny and sexy with some brilliant dancing.
The Girls is a re-hash about a few old birds getting their norks out for charity.

That logic could be applied to Calendar Girls and look how that turned out, more so in fact. That also had a very famous and popular pop star as its composer.
Ive always thought Strictly Ballroom being more niche to be honest, especially compared to something like Calendar Girls I kinda agree. Especially on doing my reseach on it (I had literally never heard of the film, which, if that is an indication for ayounger generation, may already be an issue), the film was a huge hit in Australia when released, but do people really remember the film that much? I wasn't around when it came out, so am genuinely curious. Because, as said previously, its main way of succeeding would be to open around the same time Strictly begins and promote the hell out of the show alongside it! 'Strictly Ballroom' was the beginning of a brief resurgence in Aussie cinema which included 'Priscilla' and 'Muriels Wedding' (also a great idda for a musical). It was after this that Baz Luhrman made his name, and critics didn't treat them like 'foreign' films. |

I don't think the film itself matters as much as the title. People who've never seen or been aware of the film Strictly Ballroom are going to see the title and make a SCD connection in their heads. We might get some adorably clueless people accusing Strictly Ballroom The Musical of ripping off SCD somehow, but the name will still be what sells whatever tickets get sold.

Oh good. At least I won't have to go to one of the touring venues. (Don't get me wrong, all the touring venues I've been to are lovely, but Central London is easier for me to get to.)

I get that people don't want to reveal sources, but for those of us not lucky enough to be in the know posts like that are intensely frustrating - clearly you know what is going into the Phoenix but are refusing to say and choosing to tease instead, which I have to admit I personally find a bit unnecessary. |

Yes I'm an infrequent poster, but I only post when I know things are correct, not frequent posters who post rubbish rumours. My post was merely saying it's not one of the list of shows that have been mentioned in this thread. Incidentally the show will be open by the end of July. Didn't realise that was so bad. I won't post again. |

Oh that list. The one with about 6 or 7 shows on it. I thought it was something debated in greater detail you were referring to.
End of July sounds good though.
I think the point being made is that some are suspicious or doubtful of people coming on with the I know something you dont attitude and not engaging or filling in gaps, thats the way with internet message boards on any topic. Apologies for any offence caused

Personally I think it really surprising that it is taking so long for either theatre to make an announcement , puzzling. The fact that no announcement has been made yet suggests to me that, for whatever reason, they're not ready to make the announcement. Which could be due to the fact that shows may not be confirmed to the extent of contracts being signed, or theatres could be doing maintenance and having a dark period before opening with the new show, so don't want to announce yet. Either way, I'm sure we'll hear soon! |

What do I know, but if you're a producer, wouldn't you hope to open with a good advance? Opening anything as soon as the end of July doesn't leave much time to build up a good head of steam.

I won't post again. Again, you're teasing information you clearly have but are choosing not to disclose - can you not see how irritating that is? If you know what show it is, then say so - you'll either be proved right or wrong in due course, that doesn't matter. You "know things are correct" yet haven't bothered to actually disclose what you clearly know. If you don't want to say, then maybe it's better to say nothing at all because the sense of superiority that's coming from the teasing of information in your posts is likely to rub people who aren't fortunate to be privy to such information up the wrong way. Sorry if that seems harsh, but think how you would feel if you knew nothing and other people were pointedly hinting they do know without actually giving any information away. |
