Pulver was great in Gypsy, but I don't see her as Eva tbh. Her voice is too 'sweet' (esp her head voice and mix voice) and may not have the power for songs like Rainbow High and A New Argentina IMO.

I'd forgotten I had booked this, and just found my tickets for Tuesday night!
We all know my views on Hatton (especially as Elphaba) but I'm going in open-minded, brand new role and all that.
Have never seen Evita either (film or stage) so this could be fun!

Two things... if they ever re-make the Evita into a film, Samantha Barks cameo as the Mistress please! And on the topic of the Mistress, in the touring production, in the programme Sarah O'Connor is only credited as playing the Mistress and no other characters. Whilst Oscar Balmasteda is credited as other characters in the Ensemble. Does Sarah really only play the Mistress and nothing else?! Correct me if I am wrong, but that is literally a one scene/one song character? She must play a background role in the group scenes? Credit to Sarah though, she was easily the highlight of the current touring production for me! Her number was sensational and completely stole the show from under the feet of the three leads, at least for Act I and other than Emma, when I saw it, she got the biggest response at curtain call.

Always happens. Or at least the actor always gets a good reception. I think its a sympathy thing because the poor lass (whoever it may be) only gets three minutes in the spotlight.

Yes, Sarah O'Connor is in a lot of scenes, but oddly only credited for one part. Strange, I agree. She did get a good response at the end too, didn't she. It is odd, especially as they credit the rest of the Ensemble in literally every individual role they play, in order hahaha.

I must admit, as much as I did enjoy the show and Emma in the role, I don't think it is the kind of show I could go back to again and again. I could do a second viewing of Emma, but I think Evita is just a show that, for me, I need a casting that would take me back.

I'd never seen the show, and didn't know much of the score. Came out loving the score - one of ALW's best, but thinking that it just didn't work. Hatton's not for me, accepted that now after seeing her in two roles, and Che's accent was so thick that it was hard to understand him at times (likely due to Oxford's awful sound system.)
I think the fact I didn't stand along with everyone else at the end (a rarity for me) says it all. We can't all like the same. But man, I wish I'd seen Louise Dearman do this. Although the way through I was going 'she'd have been insane at this'

I really wish I had seen her, I hsve the audio of her singing the score on repeat all the time! She is really dream casting for this role, hopefully one day she will get the chamce to do it again.

I was very very lucky to have seen Louise Dearman singing the role on 2 separate occasions, and yes she was incredible.
When I saw this revival I was disappointed in comparison.

Ive only seen Rachael Wooding and Madalena Alberto as Eva. Really loved both of them in the role for different reasons. And I actually find it quite difficult to decide who I preferred in the role.
It was Rachael who made me fall in love with the show, but Madalena made me fall in love with the character (which I feel is quite difficult to do when you are playing the wife of a dictator)

Waited til Monday hoping there would be discounted tickets for the Lowry next week but nothing appeared so I went ahead and booked anyway. Now I've just had an offer for £25 tickets. Typical!

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. I think they've improved on the previous tour. It looked and sounded gorgeous and there were a few little touches in there I don't remember seeing before (Che gives a little narration in Beunos Ares which sheds more light on Eva's motivation for hating the aristocracy) Emma Hatton was fantastic. She gave the best rendition of "Don't Cry for Me" that I've heard. Simple but so effective. I loved the staging of this too, with her so close to the front of the stage and the searchlights coming out into the audience so it actually felt like we were in the crowd outside the Casa Rosada. I also liked the reactions of the aristocrats as they realise the tide is turning. Also one of the best Che's I have seen, very easy on the eye and could hear every word he sang. The only drawback at this performance was Peron. They announced just before curtain up that it was an understudy. I'm not sure who he was as it wasn't indicated in the programme but he looked far too young, almost schooboyish so he wasn't really believable. That aside it really is a great production. It was my partner's first time seeing on stage and he absolutely loved it.

Thankfully Emma sounded far better than the screeching I heard from La Paige last time she was on that stage.

Loved it!
Thought it was a stunning production, really high standard/production values, as well as some clear thought about staging- it felt 'grittier' than other productions with a real sense of some background thought to staging the darker elements of the story.
Everyone was great-Emma Hatton defiantly has an air of EP about her, in a good way, and I thought she not only sang the hell out of it but her acting is also brilliant. And Gian Marco Schiaretti is great as Che, he has a real 'imposing' physicality about him that works, and is both a bit intimidating and a bit for want of a better word 'sexy' which is how Che should be- intriguing and a bit dangerous. He's also got a great voice. Kevin Stephen-Jones is not quite blessed with as good a voice, but he's a good actor and I defiantly got the relationship between him and Eva- favourite scenes/sequences were the 'I'd be Surprisingly good for you' first meeting and the last scene between them in the hospital.
The ensemble are also great, and in some of the choreography is fantastic too. Overall loved this and would see it again!

The design was panned by some people of the "not a patch on the original west end" brigade when it was out on tour before. This production has vbeen round at least 3 times before with the same sets, costumes and choreography.
Amazing what a full set of good leads can do to lift a production eh! *cough* Pellow *cough*
