I still stand by my comments regardless of how much I'm hated for it.
And I do believe size does matter to an extent. If a skinny actress was hired to play Tracy in Hairspray, comments would be made, if a tall child towering over Miss Hannigan was hired to play Annie, comments would be made. From what we have seen from the film and all previous stage productions of Legally Blonde we are lead to believe that Elle is the popular girl with the perfect hair and perfect body because she works out to Brooke Wyndham's workout video all the time, so I do believe size matters. I did not say Lucie is fat because I don't think she is, but she is bigger, which many people at the show commented on.

would agree that the costumes did everyone a disservice. They were... That's what comes of putting Courtney in charge of wardrobe. If only all of the costumes had used a half loop stitch on china silk...they’d all have puckered and would have needed replacing a whole lot sooner.

That is so cool that you were there QueerTheatre ! Can you tell us about the event? So you watched the show and then they did the interview right after it? I only saw act 2, but yeh that was basically it. the whole discussion is in that video so it was pretty short, and while the entire audience were invited to/allowed to stay behind and watch the chat id estimate that only around 60 people did. I worked at a theatre down the road, and our show was much shorter, so we would often pop along to the savoy and get a bottle of wine, and dance along at the back. This night we knew LBB was in attendance, and having seen her on Broadway also it was a treat to see them discuss roles. It was back in my stagedooring days too and both of them came out and signed and posed for photos individually. Sheridan in particular was very sweet and stopped and chatted with me and my pals for quite sometime.

Thank you for sharing QueerTheatre. Sounds like it was a fun night! I'm surprised that only so little people stayed for that. Also how great is it that you guys went there to drink and dance after work. I'm jealous!

I did not say Lucie is fat because I don't think she is, but she is bigger, which many people at the show commented on. I will explain what the problem here is. Body shaming is a very sensitive issue for many women and it's one of the ways that women have been repressed over the years. Now women are fed up with it and are not taking it anymore. We stand up for ourselves and for each other. Commenting on a person's size is rude and hurtful and is in this day and age not acceptable anymore. Just because many people are saying something doesn't make it OK. I get it though that as a man you don't understand what women deal with when it comes to body shaming. I'm not attacking you here just trying to explain our point of view. The casting examples you give don't apply in this case because they didn't cast a Tracy Turnblad body type as Elle. You say yourself Lucy is not fat so where's the problem then? Indeed the character of Elle is not fat but that doesn't mean she can only be played by a UK size 6 girl. "The perfect body" comment made me sad. All our bodies are perfect as is Lucy's. She looks like the beautiful popular girl. People who work out come in all sizes. It's more important to be strong and healthy than to be thin. LBB was criticized for being too thin, there's just no winning here. I'm sure people had plenty to say about Sheridan's body as well. Then Lucy is not blonde, nor American and not the age of a college student. But we go with it because it's entertainment and it's fun, like flying green witches. 💚

You think men don't get body shamed? We are not going to agree on this unfortunately so I think it best to end the conversation here.

I know men get body shamed too but I don't think that it's to the level that women experience it. For women it can start as young as kindergarten and lasts all throughout their lives. It's clear the number of times the weight of female celebrities is scrutinized in the media far outweighs their male counterparts. Emmett and Warner do not deal with the same criticism on their looks as Elle does.

I mean, I saw Lucie Jones in that bodystocking in RENT. She looked INCREDIBLE. The Legally Blonde costumes are nowhere near as flattering (putting it mildly), but still, absolutely ZERO problem here buying her as a fit, healthy, and sexually desirable woman.

The Legally Blonde costumes are nowhere near as flattering (putting it mildly), but still, absolutely ZERO problem here buying her as a fit, healthy, and sexually desirable woman. Snap (bend and) and indeed a quick scroll through Ms Jones' Instagram (purely for science her natch) indicates a girl I would say is a) attractive b) has an excellent body. It almost physically pains me to write that second sentance because I HATE commenting on women's bodies in such terms. But if we're putting a label on it she is indeed a slim attractive girl. Also how we view Elle CAN evolve. For all the wonderfully empowering things in the film it is (quick google) almost 20 years old (damn I feel old) and so the 'aesthetics' of female beauty have, thankfully evolved a bit in that time (I mean look at the fashion). SO can we not in 2018 also accept that an actress doesn't have to be whippet thin to play Elle?

Lucie has done underwear/fitness modelling in the past and I think she may have even launched her own range. Having seen her in LB and Rent, I'd not describe her has fat or even as curvy as say CHF. She is quite tall so may look bigger than more petite girls in the company.
If she is expecting then huge congrats to her and her husband and she'll announce it in due course.

Alex Gaumond (Emmett) is in 3 and 5, and Peter Davison (Callahan) is in 4. Thanks for sharing.

It's quite hilarious that people can believe barging into Harvard's admissions office gets you in but somehow people with a different body size can't be play a well loved and charismatic character.

Wont lie on Tuesday, I heard a group of women commenting, not that she was too big, but that it looked like she may be in the very early stages of something else, if you catch my drift. Even my friend commented on how Lucie reminded her of the time we saw Rachel Tucker in in September 2012. It is hard to judge though, especially with the costumes, they just weren't very flattering, and Im sure noone would really be able to pull them off. Its not only that they don't look right at all, and look as if they have been in store for decades, its that Lucie and some of the others are plainly wearing several costumes at once, which were not designed for that, to faciliate the costume changes. I assume the budget at the Savoy was much larger. Elle just has to be pretty, bright, complex, dog friendly, popular, able to be funny and convey emtions, and prove likeable for the audience - thin, muscular, tall, short, imposing or petite could all work. Off to see it again next week.

Just got back from seeing this tonight. Firstly to echo previous thoughts, some of the costumes for the main characters are very unflattering and just not right for the characters. Some of Elle’s outfits were questionable. I did like the Delta Nu’s matching outfits for the final courtroom scene and Elle’s Legally Blonde remix dress! Also the costumes for What you want were great! Lucie is a wonderful Elle, a bit too goofy for my liking but she did make me laugh and was very believable. Her singing is strong. And guys she is deffo starting to show! Rita Simons was good as Paulette. She deffo is in my top 3 out of the many Paulettes I have seen. Bill Ward was a mixed bag for me. He sped through a lot of his dialogue and I don’t think his singing ability was quite there. But there was something likeable about him. Liam and David as Warner and Emmett, thumbs up! The Vivienne whose name I can’t remember has a great voice but I feel her wig and her costumes made her look a bit too old. The ensemble were fabulous. I think the set is pretty good for a tour, didn’t bother me one bit. I took my friend along to this for her birthday present(she hadn’t seen it before) and she said it was the best thing she has ever seen! I loved the new remix at the end, really got the audience buzzing and finished off a very entertaining evening. 9/10 from me. Now to wonder: who will be Elle in a few weeks time?

If so, it’s the slowest gestation period ever, as the same was true when I saw it back in Bristol. Is it not just the layering of costumes?

Im so glad someone dug this thread up because I saw the first show in Sunderland and loved it. I had briefly heard of Legally Blonde and Elle Woods before I went into the show.
I loved everything about this, to the point where I think it's up there with my favourites now. I'm going back on Thursday just to make sure 😉 Lucie Jones was delightful as Elle, she made ne laugh and almost cry and her voice is incredible. The other standouts were Helen Petrovna playing Brooke purely for that skipping and Laura Harrison as Vivienne who's high G# made my jaw hit the floor. Yes the sets look a little like cardboard and the backdrops are cloth, but it fits with the bubblegum nature of the show. I literally only had a gripe with how Enid was played, it's not often I as a lesbian, get to see lesbians in shows and her portrayal of it really annoyed me because the audience were laughing because she's a lesbian and that didn't sit with me.
Also Lucie isn't pregnant or fat, she's just toned on her stomach and with the nature of the tight dresses Elle wears, it shows. I was more concerned about the stringy look of her act 2 wig.

Because she was wearing nothing of the sort on Monday. She did What you Want in practically stiletto heels. The flattest shoes she wore were Elle's 'professional' shoes which were still healed.

Whether she is or not, whoever designed the front cover of the programme should be fired!
Have you ever seen such a dull and boring design?
