This is going OT but as MOLM closed today hopefully it doesn't matter too much. I score every show in my diary up to 10 based purely on how much I enjoy it. Some of my 9 and 10 scores I wouldn't recommend to a theatre-going friend, some of my 7 and 8s I would. It's totally subjective, I know what I like and what I absolutely love ! Man Of La Mancha (5) scored higher with me only than Summer Street, Caroline Or Change and one amateur show. I just didn't get Caroline and I actually fell asleep twice in the first act which I've never done before or since but I acknowledge it's a fine piece of theatre. I'm a huge fan of amateur musicals. I've seen four recently of an exceptionally high standard, namely 42nd Street in Blackpool, Funny Girl in Putney, Side Show In Southend and Starlight Express in Yeovil. However I attended the first night of one amateur show, which I won't name, with a mainly young cast, most of whom couldn't sing, couldn't act and were clearly under-rehearsed. I felt a bit sorry and embarrassed for them, I stayed till the end which several others didn't but it wasn't an enjoyable experience though wouldn't put me off going to the same venue again. And yes it is a crazy schedule sometimes but I enjoy it and I have the time, the means, the enthusiasm and the energy needed. In May I saw 29 shows in 31 days and travelled around 4000 miles altogether mainly by public transport. Been from Kent to Leicester today by train and coach for On Your Feet, the Gloria Estefan musical, which is the next show at the ENO Coliseum and that's a gem ! |

I went to closing night and am glad I did. The show isn't perfect but I really enjoyed both my visits. Casidy's accent made me think of Christopher Eccleston's Dr Who "lots of planets have a North" as the Scottish accent didn't seem to match the setting or remain neutral either. I think people were against the show before it opened and its a shane it didnt sell better. I haven't had quite as hectic a schedule as a poster above but Ian definitely glad this show is on my list of 130 musicals I've seen, I don't think I'll get a chance again. Out of the 5 summer ENO musicals I've made it to (Sweeney Todd, Sunset Boulevard, Carousel and Chess being the others) i think I'd have to put it 4th but the competituon was tough!

Kelsey discussed Man of La Mancha a little bit at a talk show he did last night at the Aldwych Theatre, which was hosted by Ian Lee. Kelsey stated that, despite not reading the reviews himself, he was aware of the "cold critical reception" that the show had received. Despite this, he seemed convinced that Man of La Mancha was adored by the average theatregoer. He then went on to add that the plan is to take the show to Australia, before transferring to New York.
In other news, he also said that he had formed a good friendship with Nicholas Lyndhurst during his time working on the show. When discussing a potential revival of Frasier, he claims he has an idea for the show which would involve Lyndhurst as a cast member.
