Bryn is a fantastic actor - at least in the right production. I saw him as Hans Sachs in Meistersinger - and he was outstanding. Every word was painted, every movement considered.

I've been wanting this show to appear for what feels like forever - but a concert version at ENO with their ridiculous water policy and horrible ticket prices?! Just hope it inspires interest in the show so we get a proper production somewhere.

I love the score for this show, and I'm sure Bryn'll sing the sh*t out of it, but they'd have to cast someone freakin' incredible as Aldonza for me to consider dealing with ENO's nonsense re: ticket prices and water allowance. Literally the only name I can think of right now that would make me consider it is Kelli O'Hara, and I'm sure she's busy...

And that water policy has fallen by the wayside. It was there ( and will probably be there again) for Bat Out of Hell and the rock oriented shows because people came with water bottles full of gin and vodka. Why not focus on the fact that La Mancha has a great score and we'll be sure to get a full-throated powerful vocal performance of it? That's good news. |

Look I'm Welsh, I'm genetically predisposed to love Uncle Bryn (but weirdly to despise the other Welsh 'Opera' singer that ENO like)...but really, Kelsey? politics aside (far, far aside) he's a good actor. But erm, singing he was further back in the queue for.
Sigh. I have always wanted to see this one.

Well, I for one hope the negotiations fail.
Kelsey's career must have tanked so hard. He just keeps on playing these sidekick characters, and to be honest I'm very uncomfortable seeing him tackle these roles for a variety of reasons. Also, he doesn't really read as "Sancho".
The most recent major production starred Brian Stokes Mitchell who (at the time) had a marvelous voice and oozed charisma. This Bryan is a good singer but he's dull dull dull.
I'm praying for an Aldonza/Dulcinea that can rescue this and by God I hope it's not a cookie cutter blonde. Let's get Lesli Margherita in.

'Cos I don't know that Chess counts as a rock-oriented show really, and last I heard from the horse's mouth, they'd extended the water policy to every single show ever. Indeed, we have a pretty current thread about it here: theatreboard.co.uk/thread/5486/bottles-water-eno-ban-time Though admittedly it doesn't sound like anyone in that thread has necessarily been to the Coliseum recently, so if they have dropped the water ban, they've done it very recently and very quietly. Which would be weird in itself; given how unpopular it was, you'd think they'd want to let people know they've reversed an unpopular decision. |

Every word was painted?! Hilarious, thanks for making me laugh out loud this morning. Having followed Terfel's career for 30 years, I stand by my opinion that he is a great actor. Perhaps he is better suited to the operatic stage - rather than musicals. But his Hans Sachs was truly outstanding. It was a nuanced and intelligent interpretation of a tricky role. He is not one of the old school opera stars who just stands and delivers as loudly as possible. He inhabited the role of Sachs completely. |

Having seen him many many times myself too... even at the ENO in a musical, so the most comparable role to this... the man can't act for toffee!

Even with a big name cast, I think this is the wrong choice to sell out more than a handful of dates.
It is a bizarre piece in terms of book. The score is patchy - at best. It has never achieved significant success in the UK - just over 250 performances in 1968 and no major revival since that I can find.
It would not be on my list of things to revive in such a way.
I must admit I only know it from the bizarre recording with Domingo and Mandy Patinkin... so perhaps that has coloured my enjoyment of the piece. But I can think of far better use of that big theatre than Man of La Mancha in concert.
