It seems however that the protesters' main issue is the lack of consultation, so has the theatre addressed that?

Yes, they've admitted the lack of consultation was a problem and started having meetings with the protest group, which is why holding this "vigil" at this point seems so counter-productive. |

One thing we forget in all this is just how much the residents loved the Tricycle. I’m glad that Rubusingham iS consulting with them because it would be a shame to dismiss their heartfelt feelings just because they are (I assume) mostly white and middle class. Surely it is this kind of passion for Theatre that all Theatre makers are trying to engender in local communities. If I was Rubusingham, instead of maintaining a stand-off with the residents I would embrace them because their support of the Theatre could be expanded to include fundraising activities etc. On the other hand the residents have to respect that Rubusingham is in charge and not block or undermine her authority.

Yes, agree with this - its just unfortunate that the "optics" of the protests have led to it looking like older white people vs BAME woman, which clearly wasn't the intent of the campaign.

Respect does have to be earned. And it is also a two way street.
Proper community consultation ahead of the rebranding would have done that.
Transparency over the rationale behind the name might also have helped.
There is clearly a significant sector of the local community that does not understand the change and feels excluded from something that they hold very dear.
It was mishandled at the start and continues to be mishandled now.
I still believe it is a dreadful name change. I cannot fathom the rationale. Would I protest? Probably not. But I would ask questions and raise concerns until they were answered.

I was broadly sympathetic at first, but this is all turning into a bit of a farce now. the name of a theatre isn't worth all this hassle

The people behind the campaign believe it is worth their continued efforts. I don't believe that the Kiln board will shift their position. But it is still right to explore whether the 'consultation' was adequate under the circumstances.
Kiln needs to rebuild relations with the whole of their audience- both local and beyond. Showing some good faith would help start the trust-building.
Intransigence certainly won't.

White teeth had bad reviews but seemed to sell well. I'll see the review for their new play before deciding.

I didn't see White Teeth (know she's popular but have never managed to read a Zadie Smith novel) though some here did, and I really liked the opening play of the new season, Holy sh*t, which again, a few others here saw. So I haven't been that recently but I'm seeing the new production - Approaching Empty, by Ishy Din - as I've liked his previous work, and will post my thoughts idc.
Plus, I definitely like the revamp, whereas others here have had more muted reactions. I'm certainly looking forward to my raised aisle seat with speedy access to the foyer for loos/dashing for the tube post-performance. The Kiln/Tricycle isn't that convenient in travel terms for me as though the area is well-served, it's easily at least a brisk 5-minute walk to the tube, along a cluttered and crowded pavement; the overground doesn't serve my route and the many buses are so slow. Hence the doubled aisle seating is very helpful.
