The Stage article says they've been thinking about changing the name since 2012, and took a full year to decide on Kiln. I'd love to know what some of the rejected names were if Kiln is the best on the list.
Selfishly, my London Theatres book is now already out of date!

Kiln is a stupid name. No doubt some consultant has pocketed a nice sum for coming up with such an "original" name. Remember Aviva?
As for "disassociation" - have the people who took the decision to ban the Jewish Film Festival been fired? If not, changing the name is meaningless. I'll give them a chance - there's a couple of things on the programme which interest me - but if I hear about any discrimination or prejudice against anyone I will put them on my sanctions list.

The new name really has that 'noughties' brand feel. It reminds me of all those Nigel Slater books winsomely called 'Toast' and 'Tender' and those products with names like 'Graze' bought by people who eat their breakfast off artfully chipped enamel plates on reclaimed laboratory tables. When I was younger a lot of bands dropped the 'The' and it spread to other hipster/artsy things - my local arts venue The Bluecoat recently rebranded as just Bluecoat, and you have similar with Fact, Home (in Manchester - try googling it! Idiotic choice of name). There is a Thai restaurant in Soho called Kiln. Perhaps this is a franchise, theatre and Pad Thai venture? Probably the same consultants they used when re-naming the St James to The Other Palace. What a pile of pants. |

Kiln is one of the best restaurants in London at the moment. If the theatre is half as good they're onto a winner.

Does anyone know if they have changed the seating layout in the stalls so they can be accessed from both sides? As I like to sit at the end of a row it would double my choice of seats.

I always think if you're going to name a theatre after something like a kiln or a chocolate factory or a chickenshed, then the name really should reflect the history of the building. If you can't look at a theatre name without going "oh, I see, it's named after this [person]/[local area]/[pub]/[building feature]/whatever", then it's an odd choice of name. Mind you, they've got form for that at least, why on earth was it called the Tricycle to begin with? (I mean, I've looked it up and could now answer that question, but I'd be surprised if many people knew without checking.) You’re leaving us hanging, Baemax...okay, we could all look it up, but it’s quite nice to have the story on here for the record. |

Oddly, Kiln isn't that easy to say as although it looks like one syllable, it's really two if you're to sound the final "n". I also think that unlike "Tricycle" it will be easier to mishear/less easy to understand if people aren't familiar with it. But I'm sure it will become better known in time.

Kiln isn't that easy to say All hard consonants, spiky, and something I associate with death, asbestos and getting your eyebrows singed. No, don't like it at all. |

I quite like the name, it's relates to the area it's in, Kilburn and it doesn't sound generic unlike Tricycle.

Does anyone remember the great Tricycle fire? It was supposedly arson, but I don’t think they ever found the culprit. Some say it was a disgruntled actor. Given this history the new name might be tempting fate.

Always liked this Theatre, name change will take time to get used to, booked the first three shows (surprised they were on general sale, only checked the web site out of interest). Still smile when I think back to the idiocy that was Ben Hur, their last Christmas show.
Adding to my calendar, computer would not recognise the name change, so still the Tricycle for now.

Help, please, from anyone who has successfully booked: I've tried, but the new site seems hopelessly uninformative in terms of listing performance times and discounts, which the old one used to show separately so you knew immediately, if for instance you wanted a matinee and/or a discount, which date to click on.
Now I can only see prices for individual dates; I cannot find a section about booking info; it's not in the FAQ etc, so is it there and I've just not found it yet or have they unhelpfully omitted all this essential info?

The above steps worked for me on my Computer and iPad. |

“Artistic director Indhu Rubasingham told The Stage the name Kiln “absolutely locates [the theatre] in Kilburn” as well as “denoting a space of transformation, heat, energy and forging”.”
Ha ha. It locates the theatre in Kilburn only because it has the same letters in it not because of any historical connection or because the two words have any meaning in common - they could have called it The Bun.
Also it shows up the sad lack of scientific knowledge amongst arts graduates if they think a kiln has anything to do with “forging”.

Thank you; that does indeed seem to be what you have to do, but it's very long-winded as it means searching by date, then checking prices, etc, whereas before it was easy to see which dates to try and also what the general times/days were, e.g. Wed/Sat matinees from whichever date, etc, concessions available at performances and so on. I will have to ring or email them when I have time... |

Haven't been there since I saw Sean Hughes do his 'Life Becomes Noises' show back into 2013, I really should make an effort and go and see something there sometime soon.

Don’t mind either way, what’s the fuss? I always thought Tricycle was a weird name though, it made it sound like a children’s theatre.
