Two tabloids are reporting that a revival of Shirley Valentine is likely to happen with Sheridan Smith.

I think it'll sell very well although I wonder what theatre? There are plenty to choose from like the Lyric, the Phoenix, the Pinter and even the new kid on the block @sohoplace

Sheridan Smith is perfect casting for this: she's shown she can do the accent in "Cilla" on TV; she's shown how funny, personable and relatable she can be in "Legally Blonde" and "Joseph;" she's shown how feisty, yet vulnerable on the inside she can be in "Funny Girl" and "Flare Path." Looking forward to it!  |

The more intimate the venue the better. I saw this with Meera Syal at Trafalgar Studios a good few years back and it was wonderful (played in rep with Educating Rita, from the Chocolate Factory)

I think Sheridan will be perfect for this.
I remember Meera Syal doing this at the Menier. She cooked egg and chips from scratch every night on stage. No mean feat considering she was peeling and chipping the potato whilst talking and looking at the audience. The smell was amazing but each night by the end of the show I was starving. Never even got as much as a chip!

I have no doubts about the commercial viability of the project.
But given the events around Funny Girl, I hope that a) things don't go wrong for Ms Smith and b) there is a good understudy in place.

Ditto the bit in Chris Bush’s latest play where they cook a fried cheese toastie on stage. A tie-in toastie van outside (which I know for a fact exists; I’ve seen it outside the NT) would make money hand over fist. I once saw a play where someone made spag bol on stage. |

I always wonder what happens to food made on stage.

There was a play at the NT maybe it was called The Kitchen? Fully functioning restaurant kitchen on stage.

Would there be an understudy in a one woman show? Isn't a one person show one of the rare cases where the actor is the show. |

I know we are getting slightly off topic now but I was at the recording of Dinner Ladies once and the toaster on the set really works. Victoria Wood made bacon sarnies and then handed them out to the audience between takes.

I remember a few months ago Sheridan Smith was on Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo’s film podcast and mentioned she was due to appear in a one woman show on the West End - she didn’t say which one but I will admit I briefly guessed she was going to be replacing Jodie Comer in Prima Facie!

I love this play and have been a fan for many years however I just don't buy Sheridan Smith asa bored middle-aged Liverpudlian housewife.

It's only advertised as a limited 12 week run so don't think this will apply and, to be fair, Sheridan is a well-respected actress rather than a "celeb" so this isn't stunt casting.

I never said it was stunt casting with sheridan (just that i personally will be avoiding with her in it). I said I could see it becoming the next 2:22. If ticket sales and reviews are good, its a small show to run so changing the leading semi regularly could help keep money coming in. It wouldn't be the first limited run to extend |

I think the appeal will definitely be there with Sheridan but I don’t see this as something that will keep running and running. |

Although Sheridan may strike as a 'young' Shirley, she is only 1 year younger than the character's given age (42). Pauline was 58 when she made the film though.
