That's going a little far.

^ LOL Exactly! Far from hate. We're not talking Sheridan Smith, snutte The entire cast is absolutely brilliant, but Philippa and the character I find slightly less interesting than the others. I hardly listen to Burn and I think it's the least interesting song in the show.

I think it's the character and not Philippa's fault. While Hamilton is overall refreshingly different with its unusual hip hop sound, multi-ethnic casting and a fabulously sassy female character in Angelica Schuyler, Eliza is the typical bland musical theatre female who whines about Her Man (tm) and does little else. Her songs are also the most "regular musical theatre" with something like Burn heard a hundred times before. I think there isn't much to be done about it, since it reflects the real Eliza who was only ever a quiet supporter of her husband in the background, but yeah, to me this stands out too.

I can't cope with this Phillipa hate! She's my fav along with Leslie. Whoa, definitely don't hate her. I can easily think of actors in modern theatre who are proactively bad and she most certainly is not. But in a musical that runs over with riches she has always struck me as a tad underwhelming, both on the OCR and when I actually saw it. I'm open to the possibility that it's just the way Eliza is written, but pushing me the other way is the fact that I love "Helpless" and actually like "Burn" as songs but have never fully warmed up to Philippa's performances of them.

Think you all took my hate comment too seriously hahah.
I personally think Eliza was an incredible woman and Phillipa melts into her. Usually I'm more of a fan of the intelligent/witty female characters but I'd watch Eliza's arc over Angelica's any day.

The devotion to her husband's legacy is unbelievable, I found her to be such an inspiration! Thought Phillipa gave an astounding performance and was over the moon when she was nominated for the Tony.

Personally I struggled to sympathise with Eliza until the latter part of the show, a lot of her characterisation is initially shown through other people talking about her instead of her own words. It doesn't help that her first solo (ish) number is entirely about being "helpless" when she first meets the male protagonist. Rolling my eyes a bit about that.

I think I'm the only one on this board who thinks this... But I just don't get Hamilton! Don't be a martyr. Lots of folks on this board have had reservations, starting on page 1. Their reactions are often very interesting.

I know the days of show tunes becoming chart hits is long over, but I'm surprised nothing from Hamilton has been covered. I can imagine a song like Helpless being popular outside of the show. Especially with all the current Hamilton fever* in the U.S. (*My favourite bit of Hamilton fever being the zoo that named its baby camel "Alexander Camelton") That's probably because there are no proper songs in the show, just some affected posturing and talking in a dramatic way, preferably every sentence a bit higher than the one before and in an overly dramatic voice that sounds like the speaker is about to cry. And of course the cool look and pose at the end of a "song" is important, preferably with a head flip on the final chord. That would not work well on radio.

Strange, it works brilliantly when I listen to it.

Platinum is still impressive and quite a short amount of time as well, Wicked took years to get to platinum

I think achievements like platinum have changed in recent years as downloading and streaming figures have been included

Although the vast majority of modern cast recordings still don't come close.

I think, that in a world that entered the age of social media, the social media beast that is Hamilton (and it's social media savvy leader in LMM), the fact that it succeeded in that sense (of streaming) makes sense... Still an achievement- but the publicity is largely due to their very smart use of the internet/ social media (nothing wrong with that)

I think their social media activation is commendable, but generally speaking they have other channels that have worked greatly in their favor. The fact that the President of the United States visited twice, Michelle Obama calling it the best work of art she's seen, a celebrity appearance just about every single night especially with Beyonce-pretty much the most famous entertainer alive today-loving it, the fact that its cast are on US TV just about every other night..
I think the bottom line is, you can have all these avenues and endorsements, but at the end of the day, your product needs to live up to its promise, and the product here is very very good and has huge cross-over strength. Broadway is very niche and has its fans, but it was never taken seriously and legit by the non-Broadway supporting public (queue in JK Rowling's recent words), let alone endorsed by a side of the music industry (rap, hiphop) that has the most mass appeal in the world which also happens to be the anti-thesis of the Broadway sound.

Obviously having such a "social media star" as LMM is gives you (=your show) extra points but this is not the cure. Lots of other people on Broadway have thousands of followers and are very good in running their own accounts. You just need to have a really outstanding show and only with that you are getting the tripled and quadripled amount of social media publicity.
