What is she going to think 🙈 especially when Argyle are playing and all the fans are around Plymouth shouting 'green army' 🤣🤣🤣
I love Plymouth BTW but I'm not Vanessa Williams 🤣

I believe it was London Theatre Direct Did they post the whole cast or just the lead?

So they sent out that teaser video to every theatre outlet and influencer under the sun to share this morning. Unfortunatley however one of them accidentally posted the wrong video and completely spoiled who it is. Whoops! 😂

But keep in mind that they could cast Meryl Streep in this musical and without a total overhaul of the material, they would still be putting lipstick on a pig. If it is Vanessa (and I can’t find that leak, if anyone wants to be a friend and forward it to mez) I have no doubt she’ll be wonderful but I PRAY she’s demanded a new score and book. And set. And costumes.

Although I recognise Vanessa Williams' face, I seem to be one of the few people who has no idea who she is!

Ugly Betty was a long time ago, and Desperate Housewives wasn't really about her. I think much of the wider public won't know her either. If the show makes it to Broadway, this won't be a problem as most folks 30+ will know her from the TV hits as well as having several chart topping hits in the late 80's/early 90's.....and then of course, she was also a former and the first Miss America of colour. Broadway audiences of a certain age will certainly remember her from the Into The Woods revival (where she earned a Tony nom) and Kiss of The Spider Woman, succeeding Chita Rivera in the role of Aurora. It's a pity audiences may not know her on this side of the pond but if the show is a hit that could very well change....

A small sampling sure, but this has been posted all over my Twitter feed of non theatre related people (in their 30s) all morning. Was actually surprised by the excited response from people I never see post about musicals. Think the appeal is Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater as Miranda Priestly. Whether that extends to actually ticket purchases I don't know. But I'm definitely seeing some buzz about her.

She was a proper disco diva early 80s which was my era so I relate more to her as a pop singer than actress. I wish I had got to see her in City Of Angels but the musical got pulled just before i was due to see it.

I remember buying the cast recording of Spider woman they released following her takeover of the role and being impressed.
No idea about the score for this but that, for me, is more important than the casting. A great cast can't shine if the songs are flaccid.

And costumes. You might be relieved to know that Ms Williams didn't have to demand anything in terms of changes. The entire Chicago production, including book and score, was relegated to the dumpster with a mostly new creative team (particularly set/costume design) taking an entirely new approach with a new director. Jerry Mitchell is taking the show back to it's Faustian roots and away from the soft-peddled, over-complicated Chicago version that was a disaster. I was hoping that at least "Seen", the brilliant act two ballad for Nigel was retained but sadly, I think it also on the scrap-heap. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Plus Save the Best for Last remains an absolutely top song to sing along to in the car, even if some people only associate it with Bisto ads. 😂

I do wonder how this will sell. She is not a big enough name here to sell lots of tickets and it's not as family freindly as say Mrs Doubtfire.

SO many non theatre people on Twitter posting that they can’t wait to see her in this actually. If only the show itself was good (which according to some of you it’s not)- with a proper press tour and marketing, this would be a hit for sure

It is a whole new production including book, design and most of the score. Consider it a new show and go by nothing that was written about it before. :-)

I expect this to sell quite well. It’s a great casting and the film has a lot of nostalgic affection from a 30something audience. Myself included.
Will definitely be trying to see this early in the London run though. I fear Lottie and Thomasin having too many ‘secco sips and making the audience for this a nightmare on a Saturday night.

So this casting news has gone viral on social media but I realise a lot of people think she’s being cast in a movie musical adaptation and don’t realise it’s actually for the west end 🤣

I think that Ugly Betty and Devil Wears Prada both came out around the same time did they not? In that sense it's perfect casting. A little more "on the nose" than I was expecting, but as an Ugly Betty fan I'm definitely more interested now. I think Williams has a bigger following than you'd think over here. Both Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives were widely watched in the UK I believe. Anyone up-to-date on their 00's TV and movies will appreciate today's announcement for sure.
