Well at the risk of sounding like Scrooge what’s the deal with restricted view being on sale for £125?!
I know this debate has been done to death but has anything other than theatre seats inflated in price so quickly over so short a time?!

Dynamic pricing, me old mucker. I got my seats for tonight for a tenner, so am not grumbling. Am hoping I have a better experience than Steve Hamilton didn't.

I agree totally. The space is used better. ST in my view has more depth. It remains a joyous, wonderful production.

This has been the play I've been recommending to friends coming to London in December several times over, I'm glad the lack of Ifans hasn't ruined it. I might have to go back myself if the reviews are still positive...

Booked for tonight as a ticket came up last night for £65 down from £125. Should have held off as now there are some cracking singles for £30! Dynamic pricing to shift the seats! Go go go!

Indeed, Jonny Boy - I just picked up my £125 ticket for £30. I echo Theatremonkey's post - BOOK! Go and see this marvellous production! I think it is better, tighter (cast-wise) and physically more expansive than last year. The first 10 mins are fixed, and the issues of the staging expanding then contracting are resolved, with smoother transitions across the cross of the whole stage. For me, there was much more snow when I saw it last week than last year, so I'll be keen to see how it is tonight. I liked Rhys Ifans a lot, but I prefer Stephen Tomkinson's portrayal, as there is more internal wrangling going on, slightly less anger and mania, and certainly less spitting. Plus, I totally believed his transition and unbridled joy. I'm delighted to be going again tonight (and, indeed, next Thursday).

OK, can now talk about it. BOOK. Tompkinson doesn't have the manic energy of Ifans, but he is far deeper and more introspective. As a result, you really believe he is examining his soul as he changes. The whole show is also far tighter than last year - the dubious opening 10 minutes in particular. Little fun bits have been smoothed out, though (bit less snow, fewer sprouts) but on the whole it's way better. Note on seating is that the side block "high numbers" side gets more face time, as do seats in the main house rather than on stage. Also, side block H doesn't have quite as much legroom this year, annoyingly. Thanks for this. Are H80/H81 affected much by the less legroom issue? Ta |

I saw it from row X in the Dress Circle which is normally restricted view. However, for this particular production the view is perfect, totally unrestricted and with decent legroom.

Anyone sat in A-7 of the dress circle? It’s restricted view but I believe theatremonkey reported it’s not as bad due to the nature of the production. Getting excited for my visit next Saturday!

On the whole I loved this on Saturday. The staging is wonderful and the whole piece definitely shouts Jack Thorne and his signature look. Disappointing to hear that they have cut some time from the beginning, as I felt when I was watching that we jumped straight into the first ghost far too soon before setting up Scrooge’s character fully. Pleased that they’ve reduced the amount of snow, although from the stage stalls I still found that it was too much!
My first experience of the story on stage, but as I say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The show successfully put me in the festive spirit (which is more than I can say for White Christmas yesterday). The obvious highlight for me was the gorgeous handbells. I echo all of those who say that this isn’t to be missed, and I’m very grateful I had the opportunity to catch it after missing it last year.

Seeing today’s show. Saw a seat available in the stalls for £35, so upgraded from my restricted view seat. Went from A7 in Dress Circle to K28 in the stalls. Quite excited!

I'm sorry to say I didn't love this. It was enjoyable but I do not understand the raves. A great production of the classic, but nothing extraordinary.

I tried watching the trailer (albeit for last year's run) and ended up in tears ffs. I wouldn't last five minutes actually seeing this. Tempted though.

I wasn't even too surprised by my own tears when I saw it last year (my eyes get sweaty very easily) but two gentlemen in their 40s next to me were also crying like babies. Actually I think the entire row was in tears at the end. It's one of these shows... |

I saw it this afternoon, it's a sweet play and very well done. I enjoyed the second half more though. Lovely people at the Old Vic, staff and audience. There was a primary class sitting near me and the kids were so well behaved. Got a free mince pie at the interval.👍

Thinking of getting some cheap seats for this for the side benches in the LB circle (rows P and X). I know it's being sold as "severely restricted", but is it different for this show as the staging is different?
...Also I hear they give out satsumas and mince pies, do people up there still get them? #JanuaryDietCanWait

Saw this today, so glad I did. We’ve had a pretty miserable Christmas, what with being ill, so this was my first time out in a really long time. Like others, I enjoyed the second act more than the first, and spent much of it weeping quietly.
I’d go again if they did it next year. Do you think they might?

It has to have been their biggest seller by a long shot. They get, what, double the capacity with the stage like that? Maybe we should start a “Christmas in July” campaign so we can see it sooner. Short run, pad the prices, say it’s all for the new loos. I’d go. |

We saw this before Christmas and loved it, it was just joyoys. I do wish I'd seen it after Christmas however, as could have done with a bit of cheering up! If it does return next year, and I really hope it does, I have already told my whole family that we will all be going to see it & they don't get a say in the matter.

This was my first visit to the Old Vic. Boy it's the most stressful theatre visit i've ever had. I'd read the rumblings here and elsewhere about the front of house space and toilet situation. It really was difficult. We went to Pret across the road at the interval to use their facilities! I was still waiting in the toilet queue at 7.30 and still made it in before the play started JUST! The staff were very helpful though and all were very friendly. I believe it was the second preview last night? It certainly felt like a preview. The main issue was the sound as mics are used on the entire cast. It's understandable as characters interrupt each other and the dialogue is often fast paced. I'm sure this will be sorted out. The walkways are used well blocking wise to give the entire theatre a good view however the whole production felt very clunky to me with unnecessary set pieces being wheeled on and off and in and out of the stage. The choice of music and carols were lovely and the bells beautiful. Again though, as a stickler for detail, I found the cast struggled to sign together (the staging and many entrances wouldn't help this) Hopefully that aspect will tighten up also. The production and script (in this version by Jack Thorne of Cursed Child fame) is very family friendly and there aren't any scary ghosts or sudden loud noises in this one making it perfect for the kids too! I feel that Matthew Warchus Trunchbull has made VERY basic mistakes in this. Stephen Tompkinson isn't particularly grumpy or at all menacing to begin with meaning that when he realises the true meaning of Christmas he hadn't really had much of an emotional journey. He is by no means 'bad' in the part but some necessary elements aren't there. My friend and I agreed afterwards that this isn't our favourite adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I personally prefer the Neil Bartlett version...it's funnier too. We also agreed that there's some lovely surprises (no spoilers from me) that if seeing this close to Christmas will make for some real festive magic. Saying all this, it's still November and i'm being picky and perhaps a bit of a Scrooge. Don't let me put you off and try this one out for yourself (especially if you have kids) 3* 3* for a freebie can't be bad though, can it? *Asking for a friend ..... |
