I must be one of the very few people who thought this was a bit meh. Some of the staging tricks and devices in the second half (the sprouts etc) were fun, I thought, but the rest of it didn't do a lot for me. I watched the Disney motion capture movie with Jim Carrey on DVD a few days later and infinitely preferred that - it was much darker and more satisfying, I thought. But I'm really glad it was such a hit for the Old Vic, and with shows such as Fanny & Alexander having to discount massively (see my post on that thread), it feels like they need something that will get the tills ringing, as it were...

I hope they repeat the early discount schemes of last year as well, that would be great! But good on them keeping the pricing the same, it's not like it was cheap, but I wouldn't have put it past them to put it up for the return trip. |

We’ve just been contacted by the Old Vic to be told that the performance we’ve booked (12th January 14:30) has been turned into a relaxed performance. Our ticket prices have been reduced but we can get a refund or exchange tickets
This is very annoying because I’m taking my mum up to see this, along with don quixote. She doesn’t frequent London a lot, and this would mean exchanging tickets for another day in January and she’ll have to pay more rail fare
I’m in favour of relaxed performances (being on the spectrum myself) but for the Old Vic to turn round to tell their paying customers that the performance they’re going to will now be catered to a less quiet audience, assuming they can easily go on a different date, is terrible
I thought these relaxed performances were added seperately, or do theatres decide to change already established ones out of the blue

They are offering an exchange, which we might have to do and hopefully later get cheap tickets for don quixote in the afternoon. A shame because we managed to get £10 seats at the front
My mum has been given the email to the management so she can vent her annoyance at. Apparently they chose this performance because it isn’t selling well anyway

PWC bookings for previews today (12 noon) - I'm so delighted I've got some tickets for this, it was a huge favourite of mine last year. I'm still in a queue on a second browser, by the way, if anyone is interested. I went for Monday preview, there were a good few still available.

Did anyone see this after Christmas, more especially mid January.
In two minds of seeing it again this year, was not impressed last year which was more to do with me than the production, just couldn’t get into the (forced) festive spirit and maybe a mid January viewing will be more preferential to my humbuggy disposition.

I went to a (PWC discounted) early show and loved it so much I went for a full price last show. When they played the handbells I swear I had to choke down a little sob - so touching. Sorry, maybe not selling it to you for humbuggieness, but I found it touching and sweet and sincere and the final Tiny Tim had me bloody howling.

The issue is definitely not with the production, Christmas is one of the difficult times of year when on your own with no immediate family nearby, being solo in a room full of families and close friends on the particular night I was there amplified the feeling of being an outsider which is why I’m considering a post Christmas visit.
Usually do classics or non festive plays on the run up to Christmas, this year a double Inheritance on the Saturday and Vanya has n Christmas Eve.

Saw this last night, which I think was the first preview? I loved it. I just wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. There’s a moment where it verges into ‘A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong’ territory, but they pull it off. Certainly put me in the Christmas mood... now to sit on my hands so I don’t put the tree up early!

I have 2 row q stage stall seats for sale.
£10 each and there were no fees, so £20 total.

This was my first visit to the Old Vic. Boy it's the most stressful theatre visit i've ever had. I'd read the rumblings here and elsewhere about the front of house space and toilet situation. It really was difficult. We went to Pret across the road at the interval to use their facilities! I was still waiting in the toilet queue at 7.30 and still made it in before the play started JUST! The staff were very helpful though and all were very friendly.
I believe it was the second preview last night? It certainly felt like a preview. The main issue was the sound as mics are used on the entire cast. It's understandable as characters interrupt each other and the dialogue is often fast paced. I'm sure this will be sorted out. The walkways are used well blocking wise to give the entire theatre a good view however the whole production felt very clunky to me with unnecessary set pieces being wheeled on and off and in and out of the stage.
The choice of music and carols were lovely and the bells beautiful. Again though, as a stickler for detail, I found the cast struggled to sign together (the staging and many entrances wouldn't help this) Hopefully that aspect will tighten up also.
The production and script (in this version by Jack Thorne of Cursed Child fame) is very family friendly and there aren't any scary ghosts or sudden loud noises in this one making it perfect for the kids too!
I feel that Matthew Warchus Trunchbull has made VERY basic mistakes in this. Stephen Tompkinson isn't particularly grumpy or at all menacing to begin with meaning that when he realises the true meaning of Christmas he hadn't really had much of an emotional journey. He is by no means 'bad' in the part but some necessary elements aren't there.
My friend and I agreed afterwards that this isn't our favourite adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I personally prefer the Neil Bartlett version...it's funnier too. We also agreed that there's some lovely surprises (no spoilers from me) that if seeing this close to Christmas will make for some real festive magic.
Saying all this, it's still November and i'm being picky and perhaps a bit of a Scrooge. Don't let me put you off and try this one out for yourself (especially if you have kids)
