I just found this short tv concert of more recent (well…Super Trooper/Visitors era) material which I’d never seen before and possibly a source of vocal tracks for stuff they hadn’t otherwise played live. Very exciting.

I wonder if they will do a "cabaret" and make us cover our phone lenses. It would be nice to think people going will not have seen it all on YouTube but as its an arena with a big audience I am guessing it will be hard to enforce. I went to one of the rehearsals for the Olympic games opening ceremony which was really before the social media explosion. We were all asked to "keep the secret" and you know what, we all did. 80,000 people not sharing photos or videos. That was very impressive.

At the rehearsal people were asked to put their phone in a bag left at each seat and to not open it until they were outside the venue. I do hope they’re not going to do this when the proper performances start. It really is an imposition and guess what, people who are hell bent on filming it won’t comply. So you end up punishing the people who weren’t going to abuse the rule in the first place. Theatres have to find a better way of dealing with bootlegging because this isn’t it.

From the ABBA Voyage website FAQs: Can I take photos or film the performance? Yes, for personal use only. However, please be mindful of the people around you – we want everyone to be able to enjoy themselves.

Not to mention there were two rehearsals of the opening ceremony, so that's 160k of us keeping quiet. I was pleasantly surprised that generally everyone did what they were asked. I'm not sure you can say 2012 was before the social media explosion though, Facebook and twitter were both massive at the time. I doubt that'll be the case here so much, it's not as if the third performance is a big global event that they reveal everything at.

True about social media but from my point of view I had only just got Facebook and I don't think I'd even heard of Twitter. Might be wrong but was Instagram around then? It was massive then but 10 years later it is a way of life.

My son, then aged 14, played trombone with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony. It was amazing how those young people kept quiet about what they were involved in. It was only on the day of the final dress rehearsal - which we attended - that he finally let on a bit about what he was involved in. On the actual evening of the ceremony the LSO held a party for all the families of the young musicians, at LSO St Lukes, and other parents were similarly bemused/impressed by how little their child had told them. Seeing them playing Nimrod and then the Underworld music in the Pandemonium scene was even better for not knowing what was coming.

ABBA-The Movie in on Channel 5 right now Yes, I watched it on demand earlier. It is dreadful but the live stuff is magnificent. There are a huge amount of people on stage with them making the sound and it still sounded thin in ‘Dancing Queen’. I think they were fantastic producers as much as song writers/creators. The team in the studio did wonders.

Appreciate that I'm coming at it from a slightly different direction but it perfectly captures the hysteria that swept the country at the time.
I still remember it

I'm going on the bank holiday Saturday matinee plus a visit up the orbital tower and then Cinderella in the evening. The tower and Cinderella are because a friend is coming down for the weekend so I'm going to be a tourist.

More fantastic comments from today's performance for local residents. This was complimentary for the disruption in the area. Making me more exciting for Friday now!

One of the Abbatar body doubles, who'd been in the rehearsal room and kind of knew what to expect said on Instagram that he was still caught off guard and in awe of what they've managed to achieve when he was in the audience today.

I was offered last minute tickets to a preview this weekend. No spoilers but a few thoughts.
The illusion is amazing (jaw dropping), and amazingly simple - it’s not the method, it’s the exceptional level of execution that means it’s so enjoyable to give over to the magic trick. Forget everything you’ve read about holograms (or pepper’s ghost as one person on Twitter was claiming it was “known” in the industry to be the technique used). It’s at first baffling, then it dawns on you what’s going on, and then you get over your small disappointment at the simplicity because it’s so extraordinarily well done. So so so(!) well done that the fact that it’s not only not real people but also those fake people are de-aged by 40odd years doesn’t even cross your mind.
The arena fabulous and is a massive part of the show and seamlessly part of the whole experience and the illusion. Possibly being a preview audience there were fewer hardcore fans than there will be next week, so the seated area was a bit less up and on their feet than I expected. The dancefloor area (which is the cheapest place to buy tickets for the run) looked a lot more fun with plenty of space.
There was a very entertaining pre-show announcement which warned us that if any single person was caught recording, the whole show would be stopped and not restarted. Not a phone in sight! I know this rule changes next week and I think that’s a shame.
So is it really a concert? Well sort of but I think it’s more a whole new interactive entertainment concept (I know that sounds pretentious but I genuinely do!). I do think if I’d paid top price I would feel it’s a lot of money for something that contains so many pre-recorded elements. But would I go again? Absolutely. And no doubt there will be songs swappped or perhaps even a whole second concert in the same arena (there are more hit ABBA songs than there’s time for in one show) once the ticket sales start to drop off, in order to encourage people to return.
Bottom line is regardless of if it’s really a live ABBA gig or not, if you go you’re going to have a blast and that’s probably all that really matters.

Really hadn’t expected it to involve body doubles. It does kinda sound disappointing when you first hear that, but I’ll wait to see exactly how it’s executed.

Really hadn’t expected it to involve body doubles. It does kinda sound disappointing when you first hear that, but I’ll wait to see exactly how it’s executed. The body doubles were necessary for movement simply because seventy year olds don't move like thirty year olds. The guy doubling for Bjorn plays guitar and Benny's is a pianist too,so all the moves look authentic, and all form part of the illusion. It's been providing a lot of work for young artists over the last few years it appears.

This is the peppers ghost theory dont click if you don’t want to know. ABBAtarsHonestly, click away. I assure you this is neither the method used in the show nor the effect they achieve.
