I thought I'd create a separate thread now that we know all the details. The ABBA Voyage Concert Experience will take place at a purpose built arena in London and use state of the art technology and motion capture to create a live concert of ABBA in the 1970s. Tickets will go onsale 9n the 7th September or you can register for pre sale, or pre order the new album for even earlier access to tickets: abbavoyage.com/

The two new songs would easily fit onto anything from Super Trouper onwards. They sound like good album tracks rather than singles, but it’s a lovely noise to hear again.

This looks alright, a bit space age. Why not do a short tour? One or two nights in a huge venue in London? One or two nights in Sweden? I don't know where else they are massively popular. -- but if Cher can do it, surely these guys can. Hmm. I guess there must be more money in this?

I think this is the only way they could get back together without actually coming back together in a physical sense. Unlike Cher, they've not performed live in a very long time.

This will sell out twice or even three times a day.

It does make me wonder about the future of live music though. I know there have been a couple of attempts at hologram tours, Whitney was one of them I think (can’t recall the other). They didn’t get great reviews presumably because the technology wasn’t up to snuff but if ABBA crack that with Voyage, which they probably have given the time and investment that’s gone into it, where will we be in 5 years time? Does seeing a hologram become the norm whilst seeing the actual artist perform live in the true sense of the word become so rare and premium that most people get priced out of the experience? The price of a decent seat at a live concert is already prohibitive, I can’t see this helping.
And then in 10 years… see the hologram version of some celebrated actor virtually treading the boards in the west end?

Even from a financial perspective, this could only work for a finite number of artists who have a large enough following. ABBA is one of the only ones I can think of who could sell out an arena for months.

In the interview they said they could have up to 1,000 people working on the avatars and stage show and it took 5 weeks to record the live performance.
That is a huge investment that very few or no other bands could afford, ABBA are one of the only few bands loved by the majority of people even though we may have spent years in denial so the potential audience is huge.
In addition having all the original band members being alive to record the ‘live’ footage is a luxury few classic bands can match.
Much cheaper and easier to book actual people so this is likely to be limited to the greats who are no longer here or no longer able to perform and are quick or savvy enough to invest in recording a live digital set for posterity.

It's great that they've gone for moderate 3000 seat capacity rather than something arena sized where you can't see a thing unless you're near the front.

And presumably a real live show would cost a lot less to create than this digital one has. They just don’t want to be performing live anymore. And they don’t want to be a bunch of 70 year olds on stage trying to recreate their glory days. I can totally understand that. Voyage is supposed to give you the experience of seeing ABBA in their prime, and I can’t wait!

I’m sssuming the hologram shows used video footage whereas the avatar concept used in Voyage is CGI meaning you can have the images doing things they’ve never previously done. Have we seen CGI used in this way before?

It’d be way too expensive for a theatre producer to invest in having hologram actors. Even for a concert, I think a lot of singers would be lynched if they decided to do have a hologram take their place on a tour and charged full whack.

Am I really the only one who thinks this sounds absolutely dreadful? And I love Abba.
I want to see real people perform on stage, not holograms that will do an identikit show every single time.

Stuff like this always feels really tacky and exploitative to me. Charging people top dollar to watch a recording of some CGI version of ABBA? No thanks.

My concern would be the setlist. It’ll be full of the ‘hits’ and I’m not really up for that.
Singers in their seventies can’t really guarantee a consistent product night after night and are too knackered and old to want to bother. I think that both Mamma Mia and this are more about giving people a version of what they’re crying out for without having to tour.

Once it's up and running in London for a couple of years,Las Vegas and Sydney versions will probably follow. It's a chance to experience something of the phenomenon that was Abba at their prime, which very few people actually ever did. The people grouching about wanting to see the real thing should remember that that was never an option. The choice is between the Abbatars or...nothing. Easy decision for me.

So many people moaning about, or criticising, this event. Do they realise it’s not compulsory to attend?!

First look at the virtual avatars. I have also read that this won't be in London for 4 years but going on a World Tour over the next 4/5 years.

Will do phenomenal box office and have a shortened, even more expensive Vegas version before we know it.
This will sell huge.

Voicing a negative opinion is hardly "moaning" anyway. If you want all sunshine and rainbows you need an Abba fan forum...

There's also this. I'm not an ABBA superfan by any stretch. But I think this looks quite cool, actually. My only concern is that they will look like ants, even from the standing area. I still think people would go crazy for a couple of live performances but I guess they just don't want to do it, which is totally ok. If it's reasonably priced, I can see myself going.

Interesting that ticket prices haven't even been mentioned. I'd be happy to pay anything up to £50. Beyond that? Nope.
