Is this still selling well? It's selling well enough. Not completely sold out every show like when Eddie and Jessie were in it and you can definitely still buy tickets day of, but it'll be £70 upwards generally. All the cheap seats are pretty much gone until end of June.

I went to see this for the second time a couple of days ago and the process of getting into the theatre was painful. Just one long, single file queue to get absolutely everyone into the building. First covid check, then ticket check, then bag check, then phone sticker, then a drink at the bar. But because you're in a backstage area with tight corridors and lots of corners, you can't tell that you're all just in a queue for the bar. I didn't want anything and yet I was still made to stand in this queue for at least 15 minutes in total?? It didn't feel 'immersive', it felt annoying. It wasn't like this the first time I went (they were using at least two entrances). Thank you! This was exactly how I felt about it. Loads of people ahuffling along a tiny corridor wasn't an immersive experience for me, I found it boring and actually quite claustrophobic at times. It was ok once you reach the foyer area but the rest didnt work for me.

I saw the new cast on Wednesday. Firstly, (even though Fra and Amy sing beautifully and Fra has better diction than Eddie), I have to remark on how much power Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne's voices had. His also has this booming quality that kind of enveloped the whole room.
I loved Jessie's take on the role and her rendering of 'Mama' and 'Mein Herr' had more panache, but on the whole, Amy's is a more successful and emotional performance, because it is better modulated. It helps that her chemistry with Omar Baroud works so well. I thought Omari Douglas had been excellent, particularly in the second half, but looking back now, probably shouldn't have been cast, because even on a platonic level, he and Jessie did not have enough chemistry.
Vivien Parry is excellent, and I really liked the interplay between toughness and vulnerability in her performance. So glad that this production has given both her and Liza Sadovy this part and the spotlight that comes with it.
Fra Fee's performance felt pretty tame and a little unbalanced in comparison. A lot of that also has to do with his 'Willkommen' falling pretty flat. For someone who is known for very serious films, Eddie Redmayne had pretty great comic timing and projected this kind of two-facedness that really worked.
All this to say that the production is not diminished, and is even a little more emotional because of Amy and Omar, and kudos to Rebecca Frecknall.

Saw this tonight. I found it good, not great. The Sam Mendes production worked better for me, though the gritty nuances in this production demonstrate some really clever direction and controlled performance. Sat front row of stage based dress circle - good seat, not sure it was worth a ton though.

Definitely the same "feel" (although as noted above, entering was needlessly claustrophobic and uncomfortable). Much preferred Amy Lennox to Emily Benjamin, but Fra Fee left me cold. There was no novelty or anything memorable about his performance, if I'm honest. Whilst he was fine, it just didn't spark for me. Way better than Wayne Sleep! Liza Sadovy also sadly missed. Overall it felt a touch flat in the auditorium if I'm honest - the show is now settled and going through the motions (although I'm not suggesting anyone was phoning in, the effort and sweat was clear), I feel more about the "energy" of the flow of the show. Things picked up a little in places, but quickly settled back down to a rhythm. Much prefer the new Cliff in every department. The previous chap (whose name I forget, my apologies) wasn't strong. To be honest I liken this experience directly to when I saw Wicked with Kerry Ellis after Idina left. An excellent show which has lost "something", with absolutely none of that blame on the cast who do a solid job. The sound was really good (people tend to only notice sound when it's bad!) and it was quite svelte with cues and acted scenes still. It's just "less" somehow. Perhaps I'd have felt differently if it was my first visit. They really need to sort out the entering process though!

That entry process - it felt utterly pretentious. I like the way Tom Scutt's design has transformed the venue but I went to the right door to then go through a dingy basement type entrance up and down various stairs, poor signage, to find I had to go back down the way I'd come up and across the stage before climbing more stairs to the rear dress circle where there was no bar and no loos. That experience is not worth the premium price. This feels like a show that sold on the allure of star performers. Whilst everybody was of a high quality,nobody truly stood out for me. And the arsing around with camera stickers is pathetic. Bits of the show were really great, and bits were pretty average. The band was superb.

I have to agree with you both. I saw it when I was visiting from the states. I loved Emily and Eddie, but I found the production a mixed bag. I wish I could say I had a big emotional reaction, but I didn't. Mostly, it left me cold. The Mendes production however is ingrained in my brain.

Near me downstairs someone dropped a phone, someone else said (a bit too loudly) "you're not supposed to have a phone out" and she said "**** off". The actors were clearly distracted though and I think a line was flubbed as a result.

I think their phone policy is unenforceable but wish a few people had better theatre etiquette and manners. I had two elderly Germans sat next to me talking alot, though they redeemed themselves during "Married" when they slowly linked hands during Anna-Jane Casey's section (which was probably the highlight for me - it was beautiful).

Very interesting as originally it sounded like this cast - whom I'm quite excited to see - would have ended their run at the end of June. Perhaps to make room for star casting

I believe at the time Fra Fee would have had Beauty and the Beast spin off to film for disney plus, but that was cancelled and they won't be making a second series of hawkeye so maybe his availability was better.

Just because the cast as a whole isn't changing until October doesn't mean certain people won't be leaving earlier. They could still change the leads.

I'd imagine the producers would want to announce whomever is taking over for Fra and Amy soon to ensure those summer tourist box office dollars? Perhaps if they are not well known names holding back that announcement would make sense and let the show continue to sell itself. Regardless, looking forward to seeing this in July

Why do I have this feeling that Danny Lee Wynter could make a good Emcee in the future runs? He’s black, queer, a recent Olivier nominee, the same age as Eddie Redmayne, and can bring a different take to the role. He played the Emcee way back in drama school. He’s not a household name yet but this is a good opportunity for him.

Not confirmed, but it seems as though Buckley and Redmayne will be reprising their roles on Broadway, Spring 2023. Allegedly playing the Hudson.
