She was in the audience this afternoon apparently. First time Jessie was ever in the building for a matinee maybe? 🙂

Why should anyone begrudge a deserved award for a performer just because they got taken sick in the last month of their run? The lion's share of the reviewer plaudits went to her for a reason. David Tennant deserved his Hamlet accolades as well. The takeaway is that most people who saw Jessie in the role feel extra lucky to have done so. Yes, they are so so privileged that she turned up for them.🙄 They should think themselves so very very lucky. Not like they paid through the nose for said privilege or anything. I fully respect Taron Edgerton for having the balls to pull out of ‘Cock’ rather than let people down with a halfy halfy ‘I might be well enough’ mentality. Yes but a lot of people had already paid the big prices to see 'Cock' whether he was there or not.

If he was ill he’d call out, disappointing folks and there would be an air of uncertainty over the whole run. At least these people know exactly what they are getting before they get it, and can attempt to shift their tickets if need be. The issue with Jessie was not her absence, more the way it was managed. When a pattern emerged there was still no prior announcement of absence, and people still schlepped to town not knowing what they would get.

She was in the audience this afternoon apparently. First time Jessie was ever in the building for a matinee maybe? 🙂 Are we really back to the childish sniping again? It wasn't funny the previous times either and I really don't see the point given she's no longer in the show. What exactly is the difference between the posts that you have deleted from the likes of the Cinderella thread criticising performers and the ones you are allowing to go round in circles here? They're all about performers' health at the end of the day, so surely the board policy should be consistent?

Seemed quite light hearted to me. Mental health as ‘sacred cow’ is getting a bit of a stigma due to people abusing it. It’s the new bad back.

I deal with the public daily and mental health is thrown out as an excuse multiple times a day for reasons why they haven't done something they should, don't want to do something they need to, should be put to the front of the queue, shouldn't need to pay for something etc etc My colleagues and I have noticed a real increase in it in the last year, and from chatting to friends in other customer facing jobs it seems to be a trend. Entitlement is through the roof.

They're all about performers' health at the end of the day, so surely the board policy should be consistent? The posts in the Cinderella thread were deleted because one member chose to be abusive to other members so those posts were removed. Later the member who posted the original IG by CHF asked for it to be deleted, which made the rest of the thread make no sense so the whole discussion was removed. No board rules were broken (apart from the abusive insults) because what was being discussed was far from a private matter. Hoever with hindsight I felt that an in depth discussion about a mental health matter, even one which CHF had made public, probably wasn’t a good idea. As for this thread, you don’t know that JB was ill just as we don’t. In fact there is zero evidence to suggest that she was or is in poor health. Some people have put that assumption “out there” and try to close down any criticism of her but no-show performers and the way a stars absence is handled by producers is becoming a recurring theme which is up for discussion on this board.

Hopefully we can move on after she wins the Olivier in a few. 😎 And fair play to her if she does. It is voted for by passionate theatre lovers in the main so it is their opinion. If they didn’t get to see her in the role they czn’t vote for her can they?

Jessie and Eddie just being interviewed on the green carpet and they both look stunning. Strange thing is hearing Jessie talk as in most things I have seen her in on stage and film she has a clipped English accent and I kind of forgot she is Irish.

Eddie and Jessie were asked point blank if they were bringing this production of Cabaret to Broadway. No one said “yes” or “no” to the question, but Buckley did say “I don’t know!” with wide eyes.

It is voted for by passionate theatre lovers in the main so it is their opinion. If they didn’t get to see her in the role they czn’t vote for her can they? That's far from the case these days. Years ago both the shortlist and the winners were chosen and voted for by a relatively independent panel made of members of the public and some members with professional expertise, though no direct links with any productions which opened that year. Nowadays that panel draws up a long list of possible nominees which is then circulated to the entire SOLT membership (which far outnumbers the panelists) who can vote on people/productions on the long list or add others to it. Then, based on all the votes, a shortlist is drawn up of nominees in each category and that is voted on by the panel and the SOLT membership. So these days it really is the theatre owners and producers who are influencing the final decision, and as we know these people often have a vested interest in more than the production which has their name at the top.......

I think, reading between the lines and based on the pattern of attendance, she signed up for this but discovered that she was not able to sustain. She isn’t a MT actor and it turned out to be too much, especially with the direction of the songs. I am speculating based on what we know, so JB defenders please contain your outrage. JB is undoubtedly a great actor but it seems that she has her singing limitations, either generally or maybe just in this role because of how it was directed. I think Broadway producers would need a bit more a of sure bet. Eddie: yes. Jessie: no. UNLESS of course there is some unknown factor that we don’t know about which means JB would be 100% reliable on Broadway.

With Jessie it could just be a stamina/training issue. Most of her work has been non singing roles, especially to meet the lead performing 8 shows per week. She is without doubt a talented actress, but she simply may have underestimated the challenge of the role.

She was in that Nancy competition on the tv when she was a kid and as a result people think she is a MT performer. She has done one musical since, a decade ago. There’s no reason to assume she can sustain in a high profile show.

I stand corrected. In that case no, she definitely doesn’t deserve it.

I just listened to the performance, and having seen the show a few days ago I'm confused why they chose that song to be performed. In the context of the show it really does work, but at an awards show? Surely Maybe This Time would've been a better option?

I am intrigued to know what this new take on the song is all about. Can anyone enlighten me? Without being rude What I heard right now they’re going for out of tune, flat, behind the music rank amateur up to the end when she pulls out a brilliant finish. She’s obviously got a great voice. Directorial choice I understand. Does not work on radio My dad was like ‘what the bloody hell is that’ 😂
