Hearing rumours about a possible Trafalgar Studios UK premiere - from two different people now in as many weeks. Nothing may come of it, but at least it sounds like they are trying to move forward to get this brilliant Pulitzer Prize winning show in front of a British audience.
Any else heard whispers?

This would be great but Trafalgar Studios no longer exists, would it be in the new Trafalgar Theatre - if so I believe it's booked up with Jersey Boys until next year at least.

Makes sense. The rights holders were supposedly always holding out for a West End opening, rejecting multiple attempts for stagings at venues like Southwark (that would have been a test to see if it was worth transferring), so a new small West End space would be a good fit.

Oooh yes Hannah Waddingham would be great and maybe seen as having an even bigger pull now thanks to the success of Ted Lasso (though maybe that's not been as big of a deal here than it has been over in the US?).

I think a lot of these actresses would have been great at playing Diana but suspect they'll cast a younger playing age - Diana should theoretically be late 30s/early 40s so Dearman is a good shout!

As the mother of two kids in their late teens Diana's age could be anything from the late 30s onwards. Alice Ripley was 45, Marin Mazzie was 50 when she took over the role and, more recently, Rachel Bay Jones too was 50 when she played the part in the Kennedy Center revival. It's a hugely demanding role vocally, so much that it completely ruined Ripley's voice. Jenna Russell is no powerhouse belter, but she's one of the finest musical theatre actresses in London and in both Sunday in the Park with George and Grey Gardens she held her own against the somewhat more accomplished singers that previously played the same roles. She has also expressed interest in playing Diana on several occasions and five years ago she sang a lovely "I Miss the Mountains" at some event with Jamie Lloyd. I'm sure she'd do something wonderful with the role. But I agree that Hannah Waddingham would be the most natural and exciting choice, especially after so many years since her last West End outing. Cassidy Janson would be brilliant too! Also, I don't think they really need a recognisable name for Diana, they could always cast some X-factor kids for roles like Gabe, Natalie and Henry and get some real theatre professionals for Diana and Dan. |

I think Diana is probably supposed to be about 40 at most. The lyrics make a point of making obvious how young and naïve she and Dan were (I'd have to scour the lyrics in more depth but it seems she wouldn't have been much older than 20 when she had Gabe and, although this is no longer in the show, there is a line on the cast recording which says Gabe is 18) but obviously the age of the character hasn't influenced the casting of the role before so I doubt it would now, and the experience that comes with age would probably be more valuable to the performance than the age of the performer.

I've seen it twice (once with Alice Ripley, and once with Marin Mazzie), and I absolutely loved it. Would see it again in a heartbeat.
