At least learn the actors bloody names. Carly Mercedes Dyer Adam Cooper And it was SCARLETT Strallen. Not Summer. And she was totally miscast IMO. Why, is it in the rules? I didn't realise there was an etiquette to follow. Lighten up. Etiquette- basic knowledge of peoples names. Have a nice Xmas.. thingey-whatever-your-name-is |

Nipped back this evening to catch this again and enjoyed this very much again. The theatre was much fuller than last time too.
I sat at the end of the front row, which is a far superior view (and angle) to the centre of the row, which I had last time. Two empty seats next to me too, so I had plenty of room.
Several covers on. Marina Tavolieri was on as Val Clarke (there were signs, but not too obviously placed). Eamonn Cox was on as Richie Walters (no evidence of this in the theatre or on social media, but it certainly wasn’t Andre Fabien Francis). Everyone was on form again.
On the train back to London now. I do have a ticket for the closing performance at 2:15pm tomorrow, but with all the train cancellations and the strike I can’t risk staying over. So if it’s of use to anyone, let me know and I’ll send you the e-ticket (free to a good home). Front row aisle seat, but the opposite side to where I sat tonight.
A great run of this musical and well done to everyone concerned.

But of all of them ACL shouldn’t need a million dollar overhaul should it? It’s literally an empty stage. I loved the lighting in this but it really wasn’t necessary and in fact rather incongruous given the supposed circumstances we’re being asked to believe in. They should have focussed on casting it for the dancing and acting. And now I’ve said that I WILL single some of them out, Paul and his speech did nothing for me whatsoever. I don’t think it did much for him either. I could have been up there reading it from a script and managed as much emotion. Cassie - same singing voice as in Anything Goes - nope.. she wasn’t putting that squeaky voice on for Ermine that’s her ‘real’ voice. She was the worst for gabbling her lines too.Judy Munro, totally unbelievable. Diana - it was her first professional performance apparently and it showed. Al was good, Kristine was good and I really liked her “Sing” despite the wig. Val was good, Sheila was ok and had to cope with by far the most laughable wig on stage. The rest of them were either unmemorable or pretty average. A good touring production of ACL is overdue and I wouldn’t be mad with a bit of stunt casting if those chosen can act and dance and it was going to put bums on seats. I think what let it down for me was not having a completely different set for "One", because that reveal is such a coup-de-theatre in the original. Having some lights laid on top of the normal set (pretty as they were) didn't cut it for me in terms of that transition from behind the scenes to the stage of their dreams/future.... Carly thingy was totally miscast as Cassie (she would have made a better Sheila, perhaps) Her dancing was not at the standard it needed to be for The Music and The Mirror - I shall never forget Summer Strallen's lithe performance - gliding across the stage - simply thrilling. Judy Munroe - dreadful. I actually thought Diana Morales (renamed Deanna, for reasons unknown) was pretty good actually. One of the better ones. She managed to convey some of the Latina personality. The wigs, as you say were horrifying. Cheap-ass! The Sheila was too hammy. It's a hard part to get right, and she didn't have the technical ability to tow the right line. No one has mentioned Adam thingy as Zack - who I thought was excellent! Thingy? You sound like you really respect theatre as an art form. |

What a fantastic way to end the year.
Curve always pull it out of the bag with musicals and this was no exception. Seemed fresh and relevant today as the seventies -particularly enjoyed Ronan Burn as Bobby (would make an excellent Berger in Hair) and Ainsley Paul Ricketts as Paul (did well with a moving monologue
Looking at the online cast list I don’t think we had the originally cast Diana Morales (listed as Diana but inexplicably called Deanna onstage?) or Val but overall a great ensemble piece. What I did for love and the end brought a lump to my throat. The standing ovation went on for a loooong time and was deserved.
Weaker moments: ‘Judy’ I think was in a hurry to start 2022 - every word she uttered was gabbled at such speed I literally didn’t understand a word of anything she said. And ‘Cassie’ a fine singer but not sure she convinced me as the ‘star’ dancer. Also disappointed no tap shoes in ‘I can do that’ - a song about going to ...erm... tap class was performed as a soft shoe :-(
I found the camera hugely distracting. If you’re going to use that as a device then please make sure the sound synchs up?
And I wasn’t going to mention it as in the grand scheme of a wonderful afternoon it seems petty but what in holy hell was going on with three of those wigs - the actresses concerned had perfectly wonderful hairstyles in their headshots - I could only wonder if had they fallen foul of the director and been forced into joke shop bargain bucket wigs as punishment.
We had the Little Mermaid, Barbie Doll hair of such shininess and static there was a very real possibility of spontaneous combustion and a particularly heinous choice for Sheila who looked like an alpaca had been ritually sacrificed. Unforgivable
5 star production - no star for the wiggie.
Side note: no Ritchie - Bobby sang his number.

With the comments on this being so positive and profuse with compliments, I'm fascinated so see the star ratings are equally split between 3, 4 and 5! (I'm in the 3 camp....!)

thoughts on this one returning one day? I’d love to see a tour but this production, no. The lighting design would prevent it from touring I imagine and I don’t think it’s good enough for the WE. I’ve been listening to the OBC recording a lot since I saw it (I mean literally I downloaded it on the hellish train ride home) and it is as chalk and cheese because of the cast. The show should be about the cast’s acting, singing and dancing, not gimmicks like the video and lighting. Nikolai Foster failed this time in my opinion. |

Missed this the last time around so will probably check it out when it hits Sadler's Wells. Thrilled Carly is so steadily employed but both shows she's booked lately remind me that talk of an Assassins transfer has disappeared which saddens me.
