See this is playing the Theatre Royal, Brighton.
Toying with the idea of seeing this tonight, as a bit stranded in Chichester because of the strike on Southern Railways, but reckon I can get to Brighton before curtain, not possible to make it back to London to see something.
Anyone seen this yet? Any idea of the fun times?

A play with music, raucous and very rude in parts; it's a Lee Hall script (which will give you a good idea as to style). Much more earthy and less poetic than Spring Awakening, also uses pre-existing music not newly written songs.
Performances are outstanding, lots of ELO songs, I loved it!

I love Lee Hall, obviously I thought Billy Elliot is outstanding. But also thought the Pitman Painters was great.
Learned since this runs for 90 minutes with no interval, which has really fallen in my lap, as I say there is a very limited train service from Chichester today, because of the strike, I was originally planning o get back to London to see My Mother Said I Never Should at the St James, but because of the strike this isn't possible. But noticed that this is on at Brighton and with a 90 minute run time perfect for me to get back to London at a reasonable time, via the Gatwick Express.
So really the strike forced my hand here, but in a great way, prefer to see this than what I planned to see.

That should be "Raucous", with a capital "R", just thank heavens I am not prudish. With the amount of x rated script, played out in front of the statue of Mary, this will be guaranteed to get Quentin Letts on his soap box, by the time it reaches the National, I imagine you will read something like: 'A National DISGRACE: Sleazy. Amoral. And Paid by you!' Which for me gives it am extra tick, as theatre should challenge you. The show itself was mildly enjoyable, but even with the amount of profanity in it, I still wasn't shocked, for me though it is all about the story, which held me firmly earthbound. 3 Stars |

With this and The Threepenny Opera with a plethora of swearing Letts may just explode, especially as the latter is via his pet hate Simon Stephens.
Five stars in the Brighton Argus for this though, also a good Exeunt review but they do mention the audience seeming to laugh at rather than with, which I find strange. In Edinburgh It came across as an all too plausible celebration of teenage hedonism not a satire of 'those rude Scots'.

Completely blown away by this at the Liverpool Playhouse tonight. The 1 hour 50 minutes (no interval) absolutely flew by.
This is a triumph on every level but first and foremost what stands out are the incredible performances from the young cast. All six actresses are flawless. From rousing, soaring vocals to exquisite comic timing, superb characterisation and the full gamut of emotions. So, so impressive.
Highlighting individuals seems almost superfluous but Karen Fishwick as Kay and Dawn Sievewright as Fionnula have terrific stage presence and are utterly compelling and captivating to watch. Melissa Allan gives a beautifully understated, perfectly pitched portrayal of Orla. And I loved the attitude and swagger Kirsty MacLaren brought to Manda.
If the performances are individually outstanding, as an ensemble they're arguably even better. I haven't seen alchemy like this on stage since the original London cast of Once.
Beg, steal or borrow to see this at the National or book to see it in Liverpool right now!

I went for the 5:30 performance on the grounds that if I don't break any limbs in the meantime I can *probably* make it to the Olivier for a 7:30 Threepenny Opera. What does that say about *my* theatre-going habits? |

I also chose the 5.30 pm performance, in the hope that I can fit in an early matinee beforehand, as the evening time is hopelessly late. There is only one proper matinee, and so early (2.30 pm) that I probably cannot fit in a film beforehand - what bizarre scheduling!

I saw this in Newcastle on Thursday. A very moving piece despite all the swearing. I enjoyed it, took me the first 5 minutes to be able to understand the strong Scottish accents. The music was great and all the girls did an excellent job characterising people they knew. I was very moved by the girl playing Orla who was the understudy. People in London or around should make the trip to the National to see it

I saw it in Newcastle this week too. It took me a while to 'tune in' to the accents as well. While there is a LOT of swearing, after a while it just fit in with the characters and it became a part of who they were, so didn't stand out so much. The singing is excellent, and forms a nice contrast to the harshness of the spoken parts.
I totally agree about the girl playing Orla (Joanne McGuinness), she was superb. It took me a while to realise where I'd seen the girl playing Kylah, then it clicked - the last time I saw her she was firing ping pong balls into the audience as Cynthia in Priscilla :-)

I saw this last week at my local theatre and would urge anyone in the London area to try and catch it when it's there (from start August) it's choc full of profanity and crudeness but I loved the music, storyline and acting  |

If you are taking a teen to the National don't miss out on the half price tickets for week night and matinee performances. I found it quite difficult to work out how to get these - it's very easy to miss. After selecting your tickets you have to go to the selected ticket 'bar' to say that a ticket should be a concessionary one. I'm sure it never used to be that complicated.
For those with a penchant for bolshy Scottish teen girls (mine was born in Edinburgh but is now thoroughly London!) the excellent Cora Bissett Glasgow Girls is returning to Stratford East this September. We loved that back in 2013.

I knew nothing about it and booked a ticket for the first preview at the Dorfman last night. It's incredible. Rude. Moving. Funny. Just perfect.
This is one of the best things I've seen at the NT since Norris took over!
