Saw this at the NT and loved it. Hope it's the same cast. All of the original cast are returning.  Hoping the Friday matinees are back too! Thanks. Then I'm going again. Defiantly worth a 2nd visit. |

Saw it at the NT and really loved it and glad many more people will see it. Do you think this means it could be nominated for a few Oliviers when it was at the dorfman because that could make sense with the transfer.

Yes Let's see it sell out the Duke Of Yorks The Duke of York's is one of the smaller West End playhouses and, according to parsley, "the running costs are next to nothing as far as the show and cast go", so presumably this doesn't need to sell out to be a commercial success at the Duke of York's. Let's hope for good marketing and word of mouth to engage the audiences who will love this in the West End. The Doctor Faustus fans, teenage girls and young women (and Ryan), could form a significant core audience, returning to this same theatre. |

I see the 5pm matinees and 9pm evening shows won't be happening at the Duke of York's, it's very much a conventional schedule which in some respects is a shame (as an out-of-towner, I always appreciate a Friday matinee).
Hoping Our Ladies will grace West End Live with their presence, especially if they're now billing themselves as a musical (even if the show really isn't).
Also very much looking forward to seeing another show of the same ilk, Glasgow Girls at the Liverpool Playhouse, in a few weeks' time following the recommendations in this thread.

I believe the show is being re-worked a little for the West End sit down run. Material is being added and an interval as well, so maybe the additional material is more ELO and it tips it over into being, if not a full blown musical, then at least a play with songs?

Loved it but some might find it a bit crude. The cast had fantastic energy and sounded great. Some classical songs along with ELO.
(I'd call it a play with music!)

I always ask myself "are they singing for a *reason*?". If yes (because the characters are in a band, or they're sitting round a campfire, or putting on a show, or whatever) then I say it's a play with songs. If no (because most people would have a conversation, or a quiet think to themselves, or whathaveyou) then I say it's a musical. It's not quite foolproof, but it's a fairly good starting point. I know Our Ladies doesn't quite fall under "play with songs" by my definition, but I still reckon it is one, for Monkey's above stated reasoning.

Thought I'd missed this through having to cancel my ticket for the NT run (because I didn't think my dodgy knee could withstand the rush from a matinee in the West End and up to the top of the Dorfman); now I may have to consider seeing it after all, especially if it's a revamped production. But I'm certainly not rushing to book; I shall await the reviews and the deals/day seats etc.

Whatever they add, however they revamp it, wouldn't it always be a "play with songs", like Over The Rainbow and Piaf, in that the songs don't move the story forward, they're just sort of there?

Would say to anyone who enjoyed the high energy performances in this one (as my daughter and I did) to take a trip over to the Theatre Royal Stratford East this week to catch up with The Glasgow Girls. My 17 year old son (not easy to please and certainly not a musicals person) enjoyed it so much that he has been wishing there was a soundtrack recording. Just another quick shout out for Glasgow Girls which I saw first time round and am going to see again in Stratford East this week - funny, heartwarming and great music. Glasgow Girls was a National Theatre of Scotland co-production - I see that there is a documentary on the first ten years of the NTS on BBC2 Scotland on Tuesday at 9pm. If you have Sky you can get BBC2 Scotland even if you're south of the border, but I assume it will be on iPlayer afterwards. Glasgow Girls is fabulous - saw it at Oxford and WOW. Great music and characters and disciplined storytelling that really hits home. Thanks for the recommendations to see Glasgow Girls earlier in this thread. I caught it tonight at the Liverpool Playhouse (the same venue where I saw Our Ladies last year) because of the similarities flagged up here and I was blown away. Loved the music, especially the title song, and the passion and energy of the performances of the girls was something else, ably assisted by the wonderful Terry Neason as Noreen ("I told them I didn't want to appear in a musical") and Callum Cuthbertson ("Crying tears of happiness isn't an emotion usually associated with the Scottish education system"). Having a fiddler (Laura Jane Wilkie) on the stage for so many of the songs was an unexpected bonus. The style of storytelling was right up my street. The only gripe (a minor one) was the interval. I wish the show was still played straight through as it was in Edinburgh but other than that it was impossible to fault. The story comes across all the more powerfully being based on real life events and with its relevance to the current political climate. Definitely a show you need to see if you enjoyed Our Ladies. For me, Glasgow Girls narrowly eclipses the latter. First five star show of the year! |
