I've had to take the plunge and order tickets to go as think I would be kicking myself to miss Sutton. When did train fares become astronomical I'm sure its never cost me this much to venture from the North ha. Re astronomical train fares, cheap advances were largely withdrawn in March 2020 with the first lockdown and are only gradually being reinstated. There are low fares still out there but to keep costs down you may have to choose between either a speedy direct journey at preferred times or having to change trains, take longer and travelling home after 7pm - that's if you've booked an Anything Goes matinee. The difference in cost between rail and coach travel can be considerable, particularly on routes where a new-to-UK company, Flixbus, is competing with National Express, though it's more risky than the trains when arrival in London is time-critical for a show. If there are two people travelling by train a Two Together Railcard valid for a year can pay for itself in one journey though check the conditions and restrictions. Not sure where in the North you are but if you send me a private message stating where you will be starting from and the date/ approx departure and return times I might be able to suggest a way to reduce the cost, though for the real experts head to the RailUK Forums.

I’m happy to hear they changed the Chinese characters to be less stereotypical. Does that extend to the final scene’s impersonations? I’d be happy to hear that too, though I hope the “romp in the rice” line has stayed in. Always had a soft spot for it. “Romp in the rice” is now “womp in the willow”.

Very happy to hear about the specifics on the changes with Luke and John. Especially given they found a way to fix them without changing the plot. Also “womp in the willow” is a perfectly fine substitute for romp in the rice. Pretty much the same thing but slightly less stereotypical.
Unfortunately I’m over in the states so I’ll only be seeing this if there’s some kind of recording, which hopefully there will be. Still, I’m so happy to hear all this excellent buzz around this show, as I love Anything Goes and had such a great time with the last Broadway revival.
Obviously only a few have been able to watch right now, but anyone who’s seen both this show and it’s previous Broadway staging, how does this cast compare to that ensemble? Sounds like Robert Lindsay’s being better received than Joel Grey, who I love and enjoyed in that production, but I’ll admit he was showing his age and was a bit awkward at times.

I think everyone in this cast is superior to the Broadway cast. Except maybe Hope and Billy. You can’t really beat Laura Osnes’ glorious voice and Samuel Edwards is very bland as Billy. Robert Lindsay is definitely better than Joel Grey in his role. And Carly as Erma is totally fabulous.

I find the idea that nearly the whole cast could be better very interesting given how great I thought they were. Especially in regards to Evelyn, as I thought Adam Godley was a scene stealing riot while I haven’t heard too much yet on Haydn Oakley. Also goes for Eli, just because I thought John McMartin brought so much more to that role than I’ve seen anyone else do.
This Hope and Billy not being as strong as Colin Donnell and Laura Osnes is predictable though. Osnes brought a lot more depth and made you sympathize with the show’s most boring character. Donnell also made his role more entertaining than it usually is. The romantic scenes between those characters can sometimes be a bore, but they really made them work. Though I’ll confess the first time I watched that revival I slightly checked out during All Through The Night.
Also interesting to hear good things about Carly Mercedes Dyer. Jessica Stone on Broadway wasn’t exactly a weak link cause nothing she did stood out as being bad, but at the same time her work was somewhat generic. Erma’s not that strong of a showcase in general, but it felt like she needed some extra oomph, which I’m happy to hear doesn’t seem to be the case here.

I wonder if there's a chance this will be filmed. It's a limited engagement with a Broadway star, after all.

Haydn Oakley is the best Lord Evelyn I’ve seen yet,( and yes better than Adam Godley and Simon Day from the NT production) He is adorable , funny and a lovely voice. Gypsy in Me is up there with Anything Goes and Blow Gabriel Blow as a highlight of this production.

Or maybe he was offered it, before the Covid delay happened.

I honestly don’t have the words to express how fantastic tonight’s performance was. One of the easiest 5 stars I’ve given.
Sutton Foster. She’s still got it!

Musicals are not really my cup of tea, I see one occasionally when my partner is keen. She was interested in seeing this, originally I was quite happy to see Megan Mullally and so we booked seats.
We went last night.
I can't think of a better performance in anything I have ever seen than Sutton Foster put on last night. She was utterly amazing.

That clip of the title number looks fantastic. Though I will admit You’re the Top doesn’t look quite as good as it was on Broadway. Samuel Edwards clearly has an excellent voice, but Colin Donnell also sang it great while acting it a lot better. Also, I love Sutton, but did anyone else think her voice sounded a bit strained on that song.

She sounds fabulous In the show- maybe this was recorded during technical rehearsals when they were exhausted?!
I know it’s personal taste, but I’d rather have had a really dashing Billy. He’s fine in this- but totally forgettable.

Well, Billy is a fairly forgettable role. Not necessarily bad given he’s got some great music and his hijinks can be fun, but that part always seems to be overshadowed by the leading lady and funny supporting roles. I love this show, but I do think it could benefit from less of him and giving Reno more agency in the plot.
As time’s gone on, I’ve really grown to appreciate Colin Donnell more and more. At first I thought he was good but wasn’t in love with his work. But looking back now, not only was his singing and dancing excellent, but he got more humor and depth out of the part than anyone else except for maybe Howard McGillin.

Also, I love Sutton, but did anyone else think her voice sounded a bit strained on that song. I thought maybe she was supposed to sound similar to Adelaide's Lament from 'Guys and Dolls'.

I mean she sort of does that kind of character voice, though the sound her just seems like exhausted strain, as it wasn’t like that in her previous portrayal. Most definitely due to just doing a ton of numbers in a row taking a toll. Anyway, how does the bowing order go here? The last version had ensemble, Luke and John, Captain and Pursar, Eli and Evangeline, Erma, Evelyn, Hope, Billy, Moonface, Reno. I’m assuming it’s remained the same. Wasn’t sure at first if Lindsay would get the second to last bow over the leading man, but the video I’ve seen looks like he got it.
