A night on the SS American at The Palladium would be such a joy after all we've been through the last few years.

Enough of musicals with mediocre leading ladies.

Exactly; brassy foghorn voice, tart with a heart etc, ‘aw shucks’ fake vulnerability. Perfect.

Enough of musicals with mediocre leading ladies. When I saw her in Funny Girl I'm sure she was drunk. On the DVD she is so hammy and really exaggerates each punch line because of her poor comic timing

Now Jane McDonald would be marvellous, in anything.

Anything Goes is a hard sell the last UK tour of the Sheffield’s Theatre Christmas production (god that hurts like hell typing that now) got pulled halfway through the tour.
You need a big name. Also a treble threat to play Reno, normally they both don’t go together.
I prefer to see someone from the world of theatre who can play the role very well, than some celeb who can simply put bums on seats, but I recognise you need to put bums on seats, it is a quandary.

There's smaller roles in Anything Goes that you could star cast though (like Moonface). I agree a West End triple threat would be great for Reno. Someone like Summer Strallen or Katherine Kingsley to me would be super.

The night in question had a delayed curtain up due to problems with the lightening. When I later checked her twitter feed it was full of hatred for her ex boyfriend

Was gutted when that tour got pulled, had tickets for Bristol. Anyway you are bang on there - Reno really is a triple thread role. And yup, that really doesn't go together with a big name (I am struggling to think of a decent example?). But the Sheffield tour sales I guess show the name Anything Goes isn't enough. The eternal MT big production quandary. Ultimately I guess a compromise will be reached. (EP and Sally Ann Triplett were fabulous in their respective productions).

Well. Jane can sing! So ticks the most important box (IMHO) for appearing in a musical!

I thought JM was quite good in Romeo&Juilet all those years ago Had to Google - literally had no idea that had been a thing. Looks like Lyn Gardner loved it. www.theguardian.com/stage/2002/nov/06/theatre.artsfeatures

Well. Jane can sing! So ticks the most important box (IMHO) for appearing in a musical! You could stand in front of the dancing and flick the odd wrist and shuffle ball change to try and fit in, but Sally Ann Triplett danced as hard as the ensemble in the NT production and still sang it magnificently. It really is no role for the weak.

"Now she's in love and everything has changed/ Her feelings and her hair all rearranged." - classic! Jane sang it with a touch of glitter and featherboa

I would have loved to see both Elaine Paige and Sally Ann Triplett alas I didn’t.
Saw Sutton Foster and Stephanie J Block play the role on Broadway and both were sensational. Debbie Kurup was enjoyable in the role, but could never carry the show in the West End. Katherine Kingsley or Summer Strallen would be great for the role of Reno, but that wouldn’t sell 2000 seats 8 times a week, you would need to stunt cast the other roles, such as already pointed out earlier in this thread - Moonface, Billy Crocker, Hope Harcourt and Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. It is hard to find someone like Nicole Scherzinger.
Don’t get me started having Gary Wilmot as Moonrace or Niger Havers as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, that would be a big pass from me.

If they're doing the 2011 revival production, then I'd want them to cast someone around the same age as Sutton or Stephanie (around 35). Maybe that's just me. Trying to think of someone who is a little mainstream but can properly tap (because the title number in this production is a BEAST).
