Baz is saying Matt Smith will be in Anthony Neilson's new play, which will be "created in the rehearsal room," about a "film director on an obsessive quest to capture the perfect light." I thought this sounded exciting before Matt Smith was announced, but since I love Matt Smith (his American Psycho was especially wonderful), now it's a must-see for me.  |

The video suggests this could be great, or insufferable. But I guess with Matt Smith in it, we can't afford to wait for the reviews!
I'm checking with the theatre, obviously, but in case anyone here knows: what do they accept as proof for student pricing? I'm 40 but doing a professional qualification that entitles me to an NUS card. So I'm wondering if that's sufficient to entitle me to the discount. I see they also have an under-26 policy so I'm guessing a student can be any age, but figured I'd ask. Want a decent seat but would rather keep the costs down if possible!
If not, Row B looks OK by Theatremonkey's reckoning...

Legroom was my thinking, too - there's rarely THAT much going on at the extreme edges of the stage.
Sadly, I was never an 'immature' student - far too much of a swot ;-)
Might have to look into the NUS thing at other theatres. It's not a stated benefit of the card on the NUS website but having shelled out a massive amount for my course, thinking I'd have to forego a few theatre trips this year to afford it, it would be nice to get a few trips with a discount!

Got a £10 ticket for the first Monday in August, I'm not going to bother renewing my R.C. membership, they're useless at letting you know what is coming up and when shows are on sale, and there hasn't been that much stuff they've put on over the last year that I've wanted to see (and the less said about the membership card that looks like it was filled in by a chimp with a marker pen, the better).

I saw a headline the other day that went something like 'Unreachable gamble, this will make or break Matt Smith' and thought it's theatre it's hardly going to make that big an impact is it but presumably that paper at least wanted us to believe that it was life or death. |

Some of the very best shows I've seen have been thanks to discounts and papering. It should not be used as an indicator of quality, only ever an indicator of not selling very well.

So .. this was interesting.
Director and Artistic Director came out to make their excuses at the beginning. Vicky F made somewhat disingenuous little speech about the role of previews in shaping the show. This was not a preview - more like a workshop of a first draft.
Most of it wasn't much good. Neilson hasn't found a coherent story, yet, and his characters still feel like sketches. There are some interesting moments, and ideas, and a few good one-liners.. but a lot that's flat and awkward, too. And some that's really bad.
There's a mad cameo by Jono O'Neill - think the bastard love-child of Withnail and Werner Herzog - which is quite funny (in an audience-pleasing, impro kind of way) - but he's in a different play to the other actors.
Matt Smith is quite lost - he sort of flutters around the edge of the action when he's supposed to be driving it. But this is mostly I suspect because the writer hasn't given him much to do except act brattish. And searching for the perfect light isn't an easy thing to dramatise..
Anyway, all the performers did a brilliant job trying to hold this together, and sell it, on book - but there were still a lot of people who didn't come back after the interval.
I'd advise anyone who has a ticket for the next couple of weeks (and isn't interested in seeing work in progress) to call the box office and ask for something towards the end of the run. It's by no means clear, on the basis of last night, that there's a good piece to be found in this - but it might happen...

You have very well described the nature of most of Anthony Neilson's plays, from the excellent to the less so. |
