So she was 'ecstatic' that a lot of people were out of a job?! Classy! Another way she might look at it: US reviewers, with knives out for ALW reviewed it in London, and judged her miscast (fairly or unfairly). How likely is it that they'd have changed their minds on Broadway if ALW had stuck with his star? (the 'right thing to do'). She might now have the millstone round her neck of being the star that sank a surefire hit. It's sad that a performer / composer relationship broke down over this, but I put it at the door of critics. Easy to say you should face them down, but...in the real world. And now, to her, all her experiences in his shows were awful. Imagine the SB events hadn't happened: she'd still be swanning around Sydmonton fake-smiling that it's all great. For someone who calls everyone on everything, she really does have delusions about how great and full of integrity she is. I downloaded her book on my ipad just for the Sunset stuff - but found myself reading some other parts of it. Granted I'm an ALW fan and I'm biased, but the lady just seems pissed off at the whole world. Almost every show, every production there was something with the composer, the producer, the director, blah blah blah. The more I've read of it, the more I could imagine any producer saying "she's not worth the drama". I mean, the way she talks about Evita as such a horrid experience and an awful score - if that's the case why would she have even wanted to audition for Sunset? And her inconsistencies on the story are all over the place. It's sad - all these years later, she's sounding more and more like just a bitter, angry actress. Unfortunate because she is gifted with one hell of a voice.

As well as being a great Norma she was probably one of the best Fantines. A pity she seems so at war with the world.

she was probably one of the best Fantines Woha!!!! She was, and ever will be, the best Fantine! Well, to those who remember the original show, anyway LOL. If you like a Fantine with lazy diction, maybe.

Ah, that original production! What a cast!
Yes, Patti does seem to have a gob on her by her own admission. Doesn't she also mention her brother in her book, and wasn't he a bit stroppy too?
She's someone I'd like to hear live again... I just love her delivery, the way her voice can sliiiide up and down.

If you'd seen the original, BB, there was nothing lazy about it. She should have smartened it up for the cast recording then.

I find the original cast recording unlistenable due to the slow pacing (eg on Do you hear the people sing) and the awful 80s keyboard synth sounds throughout the score

A friend of mine saw her in it and said she was rather good. Mind you, he considers P Clark to be the ultimate Norma and refused to see Glenn in it so, go figure!

Do you think Faith based her vocal stylings on Barbra? There are similarities. That nasal thing.

Faith Brown (and her comedy breasts) were surprisingly good when i saw it in Birmingham. Earl Carpenter was fantastic as always but the biggest disappointment was the set. It did nothing to suggest she lived in a huge mansion, more like a 1 bed apt.

So a gold lame curtain and a spiral staircase on castors don't suggest lavish opulence to you? If I remember rightly the telephone was one of those Fisher Price ones with googly eyes that made a funny noise when you pulled it along. ? She was ok, but I expected her voice to be bigger given the gob on her.

She was ok, but I expected her voice to be bigger given the gob on her. Haha! I was just about to write something about the gold rouched curtain when I read your post! It smacked of something you'd see at the Vauxhall Tavern. (Apparently. I've never been...) I saw that production in Hull. So I think most of the audience thought it was dead posh... (Apologies to all our lovely friends who live in Hull. That was just a cheap gag. Actually I loved the theatre, which was situated on a square if I remember correctly. Though the car journey home took us past plenty of girls who you'd only ever see or read about in Viz. Or in Channel 4 documentaries. I was sh*t scared. Just hope Faith got home all right...) I'm racking my brain trying to remember what they did for the car...

Earl Carpenter left the tour not long into its run, so I didn't see him in Manchester. I have the souvenir brochure with him in it; the brochure makes it look more opulent than the sparse set could sustain. Same director as The Beautiful Game.

They did roughly the same as the ENO for headlights, only I think they were on wheely tripods so at least their movements were flowing, not just some clown running up and down a staircase with, what was essentially, a torch pretending to be a car. I do remember seeing Earl in Bristol and wasn't Michael Bauer STILL Max? Not a lot wrong there.

wasn't Michael Bauer STILL Max? Not a lot wrong there. He was indeed, he did the role from the beginning of the West End production (albeit as a understudy). I was surprised he didn't do the ENO run!
I loved Earl Carpenter as Joe.

Of all the Joe Gillis - Kevin Anderson was always one of my favorites (at least vocally, never saw him live) - he had a naturalness and ease to me. Never really cared for Alan Campbell any of the 8 times I saw him on Broadway, or on the recording.
Frustrating they never recorded the Australian Cast - Hugh Jackman and Debra Byrne - how much does ALW wish he had that one done?

I sent a letter to Glenn at the London Coliseum asking for a signed flyer which I enclosed with SAE.
Today I returned from my holiday to Cyprus to this surprise.
