Looking forward to the pre-performance talk on Tuesday. The chance to see the "original" Norma Desmond perform a Sunset song is one I can't miss.
Which makes me wonder, does the agreement with Amy Powers still hold in this production? Is she still "gratefully aknowledged"?

Damn, I knew this would happen. I should never have read this thread as I now really really want to see this, and at a high price too due to my sheer inability to sit far away from the action.
What's the front row like for this? Perfectly acceptable if the orchestra are on stage?
I guess I can live on cheap food for a month to cover this.......

Michael Xavier has pulled out of presenting the Oliviers stage in Covent Garden Piazza, hope he's ok...

I hope he's just tired. I was thinking this myself on how he'll be able to do three consecutive shows, do the Oliviers, and be back on Monday. I can understand if this was a long run and if he had the show into his daily system and routine, but I can only imagine how taxing it must be and the amount to pressure at the beginning of the run.

Ring the box office and see if any of the DC slip seats are available as they aren't shown on the website. A perfect 'front row' view without looking up the whole way through nor embarrassing yourself by constantly looking down at the dummy Joe hanging in the pit. |

If anyone is looking for the roof of the London Colesium, it must be somewhere around Hyde Park, depending on the prevailing wind, as Ms Close approximately took the roof off the place. Very rare in London when an actor makes their entrance they get around of applause. Got a deserved standing ovation at the end, to borrow a word from the show, she was stellar. Michael Xavier was very good, good voice and all that, but for me he didn't capture the self loathing in The title song, where he sold himself out, John Barrowman, Kevin Anderson and Alan Campell did this so well.. Siobhan McCarthy was fine too as was Fred Johansen, but wasn't as good as Dave Willets. As pointed out it is a static set, obviously original production wasn't at the Adelphi and a stunning set can detract from shortcomings in the score, this afternoon the score had no where to hide, and it didn't need to. Thus for me is Andrew Lloyd Wbber's purple patch, I adore Aspects of Love, Whistle Down the Wind and this one. As I said the set is static, so this would mean the show would be dominated by projections, which I normally hate, but here again they were used sparingly and great effect, the two car scenes were done with great imagination, I am not going to expand on this one, as not to spoil your visit. Which leads me to say that theother triumph here other than Glenn Close, was the direction, which was done with great deftly and remarkable nuanced imagination. I do not know who the director is, so he/ she could come from the Theatre or Opera field, I don't know, but going to find out. 5 stars. I have just quoted myself here, just to prompt you guys that when I typed the above post I didn't know who the director was and for me he triumphed here, with superb direction. I have looked up who the director, who is Lonny Price, who I haven't encountered before, except for Sweeney Todd at the ENO last year, who I thought his direction was again sublime, always remember with Sweeney dhow they started the piece as a recital with the actors dressed in formal wear and lectures in place and me thinking oh no, then they proceed to trash the place. look forward to seeing Lady's Day at Emerson Bar Grill. |

In London this coming weekend, and reading all of these comments I'm sorely tempted to ditch The Painkiller in favour of Sunset. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether I should drop the £57.50 on B17 Upper Circle, or spend a bit more to be in the middle of the Dress (G31)?

I shall be attending press night at the Opera Populaire tomorrow. You can expect a full review.
I know many people who have attended the previews. Reports have been glowing.
One respected source says that La Close gives their performance of a lifetime - one which is ranked alonside the greatest actors of all time. Ecstatic ovations which he has never seenbtge like of, and a production whichvhe rates as the finest he has yet seen in musical theatre.
Other sources say that Glennis was astonishing and that they'd never seen electricity and talent like it - so brace yourselives, dears...

I thought Staunters superb but all rancid bratty kids in Gypsy spoil it for me. Not a great musical, tedious in parts.

Just curious - does anyone know if there's plans to record this? If not for Glenn, would love to hear the score with that orchestra and the other cast members (Particualrly curious how people seem to like Too Much In Love to Care... That's always been a bit of a low point for me, except the US tour version when it ended softly with Joe and Betty singing the last notes in harmony...)
