Wonderful subject! This will be at least the third musical about Tammy Faye Messner/Bakker, following “The Gospel According To Tammy Faye” (had readings at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York), and “Big Tent” (ran at New World Stages Off-Broadway in 2007).

I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the Kristen Chenoweth one. It’s highly probable they just changed the creative team. I remember Chenoweth saying there was a writing team that didn’t work out.

When TheatreBoard gets the drop on Baz three months early. 😁😁😁 Loads! Chastain’s A Doll’s House. Magic Goes Wrong (opens this month but won’t be seeing it till Jan) The James Graham/Elton John musical at the Almeida. Far Away at the Donmar. A Number at the Bridge. The Pullman adaptation at the Bridge. That seven hour Seven Streams play at the NT. Jack Absolute sounds fun at least. |

Sounds interesting but like other posts here based on a BB tweet, it's also opaque to some of us, so a little more info would help. For instance, Almeida, Elton John, James Graham, Jake Shears, yes, but who is Tammy Faye?

It’s about a disgraced televangelist who became a gay icon because she was one of the first or at the time one of the only high profile Christians to publicly support and embrace the LGBT community during the AIDS epidemic.
Filming just wrapped on the Jessica Chastain movie and the Chenoweth musical is in development hell.

I'm not sure if the best approach to writing a 1980s Ragan-era musical would come from a team of British dudes.
Elton John used to be able to chug out a tune, which he still can I would think, but a non-American book writer is a bit of a risk.

I know it’s not the same, I get what you’re saying, but Jake Shears is also involved. I still believe Elt is capable of smashing out a good bop too. |

Jake Shears has said that he has been obsessed with Tammy Faye since he was a kid - and apparently Elton was also fascinated by her, because of her embrace of AIDS victims in the 80s. So there's hopefully enough background understanding there.
(And of course, sometimes an outsider actually sees more clearly than someone from the same background.)
I'm hoping that Elt can still bang out a good tune still when he is writing for other people, and not limited to his own greatly reduced vocal range to carry the melody.
