Jake Shears' only musical of Tales of The City bombed out of town and Elton's last musical, Lestat, closed after only a handful of performances and Elton has refused to release the cast recording.
I hope that between them they can do something great.

Ah, thanks, so I’ve probably already watched it. Thought there might be a new one I’d missed!
Did find a newish podcast with Rupert Goold talking to James Graham when I went looking last night, but no mention of Tammy Faye in it.

I can’t find the link but it was an interview for a film festival only viewable to people who had bought passes for the festival previously. I’m not sure if it’s online. They touched on the musical briefly.

Sounds like this: www.barnesfilmfestival.com/workshops2020/2020/6/24/masterclass-james-grahamNews about this show has been the slowest of trickles - just little mentions here and there when people involved have been talking about other stuff! It’s intriguing but frustrating - most of the time the interviewer doesn’t get past ‘wait, you’re writing a musical with Elton John?!?!’.

For some reason in the dozens of interviews that Elton John did in the past year it barely came up at all.

This has the potential to go very very wrong.

Do we have any idea who’s going to play Tammy?

Could be a drag role... Ginger Minj would be amazing I can’t believe that’s how you refer to three-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain. Disgraceful!

Could be a drag role... Ginger Minj would be amazing Making it a drag role makes it far, far too campy and this show is definitely not that. With Elton's musical version of 'The Devil Wears Prada' due to open in Chicago in the Summer, with a eye on Broadway not long after, I wonder if he'll be able to work on both shows at the same time and give them the attention they might need.

He literally writes his songs in 2 minutes so I don’t think his time will be an issue.

It’s not going to be a drag role, unless there have been substantial changes since the last workshop.

I wasn't being entirely serious but Ginger deserves a decent role from someone.
And not Edna

This has the potential to go very very wrong. It could be a swing and a miss, yes. But sometimes an ambitious failure is still worth seeing. There’s some quality people attached and they’ve been plugging away at it for years, so that’s a hopeful sign.

Jake Shears' lyrics for his Tales of The City musical were a mess and Elton spent very little time working on Lestat after it opened in San Francisco, so a combination of both of them could make this a must see, but for all the wrong reasons.

I quite liked Lestat. Well, some of it. Still feel robbed of the cast recording.

Hmm, but this is being co-produced by Rocket Entertainment, Elton’s own company, managed by David Furnish.
It’s not like he can walk away from it when it’s half done and wash his hands of it. Scheduling might be a bit of an issue, since he’s on tour, but from the sounds of it the opening in the autumn and there’s currently a nearly 3-week gap in the tour schedule in October.

They can't exactly go the Jessica Chastain way of hours-long prosthesis and makeup work (and Tammy Faye does not come alive without the over-top makeup), unless maybe they do a very limited run. Would have to be someone with at least some resemblance to Tammy and I'm blanking on names at the moment.
