Stage shows often use a reprise to end things neatly, whereas it makes more sense to bring in a new number for the end of a movie. lovely tune and great use of "when i grow up" as the counter melody

I have a question regarding the film: How does the final showdown between Matilda and Miss Trunchbull play out? I know in the book and the 1996 film, it's just Matilda using chalk and pretending to be Magnus which scares off Miss Trunchbull but it seems they've expanded it with the chain monster which I assume is meant to be Magnus as conjured up by Matilda's telekineses The focal point is still the blackboard - as it’s the whole theme of reading. The chains and set moving are just additional spooky effects. |

I really like the new finale song, I'm interested to see how they stage it. Feels more suited to a movie than the When I Grow Up reprise as much as I love that song. So do I, it’s lovely! At first I was a little unsure, probably just because it was new, and then when everyone came in halfway through, I loved it! And now I really like the whole thing and have listened to it on repeat! |

Saw a trailer, it will be hard to beat Danny Devito but Stephen Graham looked great.

Saw it today. Thought it was a slightly uneven adaptation, but loved a lot of things in it and cried several times - as I do with the show. And there's much to be said for a children's film that's bold enough to feature what happens at the end of Revolting Children.
The performances are lovely, but Stephen Graham is really wonderful - especially in the Wormwoods' final appearance.

I caught this today and loved it. I saw the stage show back in 2013 and this is such a fun, clever and magic adaption. All the actors where brilliant and I did well up at momets. I can't fault it and look forward to watching it on Netflix again next month!
Edit- Have seen other comment saying it will be on Netflix UK next summer. I hope this isn't the case.

The reason it won't be on Netflix straight away is because Sony has the UK distribution rights so it gets the full cinema and home media release before it lands on Netflix.

If you look at the cinema poster, in smallish print down at the bottom, it does state that it won't be available on Netflix, in the UK and Ireland, until summer 2023.
It's nice that it's just Alisha Weir's name above the title.

I've never seen the musical on stage. It's never really appealed to me because it has so many kids in it and therefore i think of it as a kids show, even though i know it's not, if that makes sense. I am looking forward to seeing the film though, so i can finally see it without spending a fortune for a theatre ticket and give up halfway through if i dont like it.
I look forward to watching it over christmas.

Wel that was fun!
I must be on of a handful of broad members who's not seen the show on stage. I do have the cast recording though so am familiar with the songs
The first thing I noticed were the colours. From the girl with the red beret or blue butterfly during the 'When I Grow Up' sequence, to the red glazed cherry on the chocolate cake.
The colours in the circus sequence was sensory overload!.
I loved the costumes and the wig- especially Matilda's parents and that of Emma Thompson- those were some stella boots.
Speaking of Emma Thompson, she is completely unrecognisable
Such dynamic dancing from children. I fear that at times there was so much going on with the choreography that it may take a couple of viewings to truly appreciate it.
I found myself tapping my foot and grinning from ear-to-ear and walking out with hope- hope that movie musicals made in the future are as good.

Very much enjoyed the adaptation!
The new song is definitely the best ‘added for the movie adaptation’ song I’ve heard in a long while. It actually feel integral to the story.

Thank you all for clearing up about the Netflix situation. Now I have decided I have to see it in the cinema again! (Even walking out of the cinema the idea of seeing their next screening crossed my mind) Interesting to read you say that, as that's the same thought process I had back in Stratford during the original run. Could have very easily turned around and gone back in for the evening performance. Need to get to the film at some stage.. |

I was rooting for the Trunchbull by the end.

The film had very good pacing so keeping Loud may have also stopped the momentum a bit, wether she was a good dancer or not.

Saw this today without a hangover and loved it. Made me laugh, well-up, and it's a great film in its own right. I was worried how the stage show might translate, but needn't have fretted. It's a lovely charming feelgood film. Really enjoyed it. Now I really think Netflix should film "A Christmas Carol" at the Old Vic...

I know I’m really in the minority here, but I didn’t really enjoy the stage show when I saw it years ago. I was interested to see whether I liked the film more, but I didn’t. Like the stage show, it’s ok in parts, but far from being a favourite.
The story/premise/several of the characters may be ok for a children’s film, but for adults are fairly ridiculous The story about the escapologist and the acrobatic (accompanied by tuneless music) is utterly endless. It just won’t go away! I literally fell asleep when it reappeared for about the 20th time. I enjoy some of the songs (in particular, When I grow up, Revolting children, plus one of Miss Honey’s songs) - but for me, there are too many duds. I’m just not really a fan of Tim Minchin’s writing. And has already been said, that amount of children’s singing is a bit painful!
