Emma Thompson has been cast in the role. And to my mind, she is too old for it. But hey ho. Hardly! Everything is cast too young these days. She will be excellent I’m sure.

She's 61 so, as a teacher, she could have retired at 60 but many don't. Seems the right age to me.

I always thought the genius of Bertie Carvel's performance on stage was the fact that he had the correct physical stature - broad shouldered, masculine etc - but played the part so delicately and effeminately in manner. It was truly brilliant and completely unexpected.
I'm surprised by the Emma Thompson film casting, but I didn't expect the part to be played by a man on screen as drag roles rarely work in cinema (yes I know there are exceptions).
I think she'll be good!

I think the casting of Thompson is wonderful! Screen is a much more literal form of storytelling and I don't think the theatricality or Carvel's brilliant performance (He should have won the Tony) or any other male actor's performance would have the same effect.

Well whoever said Musicals needed singers anyway? All joking aside does anyone know if these latest cast additions can carry a tune. Emma Thompson can hold her own and is probably passable enough for Trunchbull and there is a little video out there of Alisha singing for the RTE Christmas show. I've heard Layshana mention she can sing in interviews but never seen anything to back it up and I have no idea what the latest cast members are capable of either. Hopefully it's more of an Into the Woods and less of a Mamma Mia.

Sindhu Vee is such a great shout for Mrs Phelps - she'll be hilarious!

Has thee been any official announcement about the reopening of the show? Tickets are on sale from the 22nd June, but haven't seen any announcement like other shows have done.

To premiere on Netflix in December 2022 Bit of a long wait, but I'm sure it'll fly by. I am really excited and nervous to see how this will work on screen as the stage show is so theatrical.

I think the plan for a while now has been for a Cinema release in the UK and on Netflix in other countries.

I think the plan for a while now has been for a Cinema release in the UK and on Netflix in other countries. I've got a feeling it's playing UK cinemas exclusively for 3 weeks and then dropping on Netflix on 23rd Dec. So, similar to other Netflix films which get a cinema release (usually awards contenders) but usually only in select cinemas, I think Matilda will get a full-blown roll out nationwide.

Netflix has to release the film in a certain amount of cinemas to be eligible for the Oscars. CODA played in my local cinema just after it was released on Apple TV which obviously went on to win Best Picture this year.

IIRC Sony has UK distribution so it'll be a cinema release here but Netflix overseas.

I'm really happy with that trailer but also the fact it's British!!! I don't mind the 1996 film but this feels more like the book tonally.

Not having seen the show (I know, sigh. mia culpa- hangs his head in shame) I have the cast recording so am familiar with the songs but I agree, this looks terrific!

This trailer looks fabulous - very excited to see the final version as I have high hopes as a fan of Matthew Warchus, Chris Nightingale and Tim Minchin's various efforts over the years!
