Im actually a big Nicola Roberts fan, but even I find this confusing? Do we think Kylie backed out at the last minute *again*?

Ugh. The casting that no one needed or asked for... Another failed pop star trying to branch out.

I'm out until I see reviews. Sad that the lead role in a West End musical goes to a pop star making her stage debut. It will sell tickets. Maybe she will be brilliant, but I'll wait for reports, which I wouldn't had it been an established performer who had previously demonstrated the skill, effort and stamina to play a significant role in a West End musical.

This casting is just bizarre.
There’s a group of people that will want to see City of Angels There’s a group of people that will want to see Nicola Roberts (probably, I guess)
The crossover of people who want to see both? Tiny. If anything ittl put a lot of people off

I feel like they just cast these nobody celebrities and it's so bizarre. Is Nicola Roberts really going to make such an impact in terms of sales that it's worth potentially sacrificing a competent actor in the role? Is there really a big enough following for just one of the girls from Girls Aloud? Is she even well-known enough that people will know who she is by name/picture? I certainly don't and I'm young so this is like the era of pop that was big while I grew up (though it's not like I latched onto any of that even then).

To me it feels like they had a UK name too, that fell through, and they spent all their money on Vanessa Williams. So they panicked and got someone with no experience but a bit of a profile who I expect wasn't too pricy.
Weird and illogical choice though.

Strange choice, but Mallory/Avril is not a big part right?! I can’t remember if Nicola Roberts was one of the Girls Aloud who could actually sing (I mean, I only really thought Nadine could) but the main thing for me now is that I can’t see Nicola Roberts as being a big enough name right now that can actually sell tickets, which i guess is a factor in her getting the role. But maybe she auditioned and was amazing so I’m gonna try and not judge until I see it 👍

They will use Vanessa Williams to sell tickets. She’s really the star name

I have just about heard of Girls Aloud but couldn't name any of the members. Having already boked for Curtains, I suppose I'll just have to hope that she is vaguely competant and/or her role is small enough that it doesn't matter.

I’m keeping everything crossed that Stone isn’t going to be a “celeb” too. They really need someone who is a musical theatre performer for that role. The fact they’re holding back on announcing Stone scares me a little!

I’m quite surprised that she is following this path as she’s had a fair bit of success with songwriting for others, and her solo album showed real pop perfection promise.

Genuinely not meaning to be rude, but her album bombed. What success has she had writing for others? I can't imagine she's making any sort of a living from working in music unless she's got a successful publishing deal that I wasn't aware of.

And those of us who saw her one off gig last year know her voice is sounding much stronger than ever... whether she can act is another thing though! She's also written with/for Cheryl, Little Mix, Tinashe and Lethal Bizzle (amongst others) Don't get me wrong - i'm not defending this bizarre stunt cast, but credit where it's due - girl can write a mean pop song!

Personally I'm delighted at this casting. I always thought Nicola was the best singer in Girls Aloud, she's had a tough year and has been on the receiving end of some very cruel. unfair body shaming.
I predict she'll do a lot better than her former "ghostly" colleague in musical theatre and City Of Angels will hopefully kickstart a successful change in career direction for her.

The theatreboard Paradox: To bemoan 'stunt casting' celebrities, and to bemoan actors that aren't sufficiently well-known...

To be fair it’s not much of an acting heavy part. Or much of an anything part really - bar one song. I’m sure she’ll be more than fine.

The theatreboard Paradox: To bemoan 'stunt casting' celebrities, and to bemoan actors that aren't sufficiently well-known... At least if you stunt cast someone well known it makes sense from a business point of view but when it's these d-list celebrities that are getting cast and are still not good actors and/or singers (Waitress being the prime example - not a dig at the show just at the casting choices) then it's like what's the point, this benefits nobody (obviously we don't know how it'll go in this case but theres a track record with this sort of thing that doesn't instill much confidence).

This really is a shame because had Nicola not been cast in this show, I would have been prepared to spend more money than I now will. The rest of the cast is so strong and then there's her... It's off-putting.

I think the thing to take from this is that at least Nicola can sing. Really sing.

Is this a better show than it is a score?
Acquired the CD and the music (to my taste) is very samey and really quite boring - it's less hummable than Sondheim!
