I keep hearing friends who've had auditions very recently for a re-staging/transfer of the Donmar Warehouse production of City of Angels but don't know where or when. As I said, I know auditions are taking place but do any of our other industry friends know any more concrete information? I would kill to see this production again!!

I had forgotten about this. If I recall correctly, our own mrbarnaby mentioned ages ago that this was having a very belated transfer / remounting. |

I remember seeing and loving this at the Donmar. I would definitely be up for seeing it again.
I also seem to remember Sam Barks parading around in hardly any clothes.

Saw this in the short run in 1993 in the WE with Roger Allam and Haydn Gwynne...a fabulous show...sophisticated entertainment indeed...loved it!

So nostalgic for that original production and that cast from the Prince of Wales. Haydn Gwynne was sensational. I never really got that into the Donmar production. I think I missed those amazing sets/set changes. And the overuse of projections was an irritating replacement. |

As much as I love City of Angels, Josie Rourke's production at the Donmar, severely lacked a sense of humour. Michael Blakemore's original production was laugh out loud funny. Ms Rourke's generated only smiles. She has no gift for comedy. And for this, one of the funniest musicals ever written, that gift is needed.

City of Angels was given a stunning production in early July at the Royal Academy of Music directed by Bruce Guthrie with a 19 piece band playing the original orchestrations by Bill Byers. I hadn't seen the show for twenty years, my abiding memory being that it was too clever by half. This production convinced me that it is Cy Coleman's finest score with a brilliant book by Larry Gelbart, as you might expect from the co-author of A Funny THing Happened On The Way To The Forum. The first act finale. You're Nothing Without Me is a show stopper second to none!

I saw the original London production three times, and for me it lived up to that description. I do think, though, that Larry Gelbart wrote himself into a corner in the final scenes and didn't get out of it very convincingly, but I'd certainly go and see a revival (I wasn't able to get to see it at the Donmar).

From all the Broadway success, I really thought it would be just as big a success in London, so I was really shocked when it didn't take. My favourite song is " All Ya Have To Do Is Wait", as I love the jet black humour of it, but the whole piece is just brilliant, and I don't understand how anyone could be confused. I thought it was very clear what was the "movie" and what was "real life". Here's a thought. Do you think Jamie Parker would be a good Stine? |
