I don't really think we should be editing lyrics that state a character is black in order for a white actor to play the role. If it's in the text, the character is black and if anything black actors need more roles, not less.

I wasn't suggesting that happens, I agree the role should be cast black if intended, but someone above says that it's already happened in Australia so I'm curious if they have changed the lyrics or not

I agree black actors need more roles and not just roles relating to black stories i.e. Dreamgirls, Memphis etc etc. That's why I think Lola should stay black and we should colour-bind cast WAY more. Lauren isn't exactly colour-blind casting as she could be any race but I think there are some verg talented black comedic musical theatre performers currently who would make an amazing Lauren!

That's why I think Lola should stay black and we should colour-bind cast WAY more. Seems a bit of a contradictory stance to advocate colourblind casting on the one hand but then say Lola should always be black.

He has gone a few times his name is Euan Doidge, I have no idea how to insert a picture lol but theres lots of photos of him on Google incase you want to see. I listened to an audio recording of him on YouTube and no lyrics seem to be changed so they must not care too much, the very few times they actually mention his skin colour are easily missed for first time viewers.

Pretty clear views from the majority of the seats aside from the extreme ends. Although I don't know what it's like in the back half behind the rail.

Ramin Karimloo saw Kinky Boots on Broadway and said Lola was now 'on the list'. In theory theres no reason why Lola couldnt be white and you can easily equal up the diversity by casting a black Charlie. I love this. Colour blind casting and gender swapping should work both ways, any way, upside down or inside out - that's the beauty of theatre and imagination! A male only cast, a female only cast, black actors playing white roles and heavens forbid a Jonathan Pryce when he played the Asian role of the Engineer in Miss Siagon. Would there be a Phillipino girl in the French Revolution? Of course not. It's acting, grown ups playing and it's an amazing art form we all love so much! The miscast concert series in New York was amazing and Cythia's "Papa Can You Hear Me" one of the best renditions of any song ever! I'm all for a white Lola especially if they swap with either a black Charlie/Lauren. Then you don't lose out. Hey, I'm up for the whole show being set in China and everyone is Asian!

Thanks for the correction @theatremonkey, I had (incorrectly, evidently!) assumed that Kinky Boots went through to See, as with the rest of the RUT productions.

Seems a bit of a contradictory stance to advocate colourblind casting on the one hand but then say Lola should always be black. I meant we should colour-blind cast in roles usually played by white actors. It's true what Wendy said, would there be a black or Filipino in the French Revolution? No. But the audiences do not care if they are a good actress and I highly doubt anyone would complain about an unrealistic diverse cast and if they did they would be hugely frowned upon. Colour-blind casting allows more black actors to appear in other shows apart from shows like Dreamgirls, Motown etc

You seem hung up on the idea that every cast should feature black men or women for the sake of it. Call me old fashioned but I would rather casting directors chose the best people for the job regardless of the colour of their skin.

Eh, I do think it's understandable that colourblind casting only works one way. There's context to all of this.

I know the Lauren casting isn't the big news, but I LOVE Verity Rushworth. (this is where once again I have to confess my dark secret of watching Emmerdale isn't it?). Also glad she's getting another crack at a bigger stage role as she had to pull out of Breakfast at Tiffanys whne she got pregnant. Also I remember her tweeting Killian waaaay back early in the run saying how much she loved the show, so obviously she decided she really really liked it! Verity's husband is the Associate Director at Kinky Boots.
