Not crazy about what I’ve heard so far of the score from the theatre cafe performance but I’d love to see and hear Ramin live and of course Celinde is always a treat too. This is certainly tempting |

Am listening to the Broadway cast recording as I type. Not overly impressed thus far, it seems to be trying to copy lots of other cast albums but not finding a consistent tone. Of course out of context it is sometimes difficult to make a proper judgement
My only real reason to go to this would be Ramin, and as I assume he is likely to remain fully clothed throughout, not sure this is enough of an incentive when I have Holby on my Sky Box. Did someone call me 'shallow' at the back?

I treated myself to a £35 side view stalls - I’ve sat much further back before at this venue and the view was still fine, so I’m sure this will be a good seat. Only seen one song so far - I loved the music and I thought it suited Ramin’s voice perfectly (much more depth and tone rather than the yelping sound of his latest album, which I didn’t buy in the end). The lyrics were a bit “the cat sat on the mat wearing a snazzy hat” but hopefully that doesn’t reflect the quality of the entire show!

Thanks guys, I'll have a think. It seems like such a lovely venue, going to see Cinderella there in October. I suppose you can't be too demanding for £15 and a side view should be fine for a semi staged show.

I am at the matinee. Act 1 just finished and I am quite impressed. Ramin is singing like a dream and all the rest, other actors, singers, the orchestra, is also of a very high standard. If you can make a trip to central London, it's not too late to come to the evening performance which starts at 18:30.

Still plenty of tikets left for the evening performance. You would not want to miss it. The actress who played Tanya(Tonya?) was outstanding. I was in tears.

Wow anyone going this evening is in for a huge treat, that was incredible. Very sweet all the little girls who were having their photo taken with Celinde at stage door.
Took me about 15 mins to get into the format as i’ve never seen a semi staged concert before and they’re not off book which i’ve also not seen but of course it’s totally understandable as there are only 2 performances. Once I was into it I was completely hooked.

If I didn’t feel like I was going down with my second cold in the space of 10 days, I might very well have hung around and got a ticket for tonight’s performance too.
Really enjoyed this - so lovely to hear Ramin singing something worthy of his beautiful, rich voice again. Kelly Mathieson’s voice more to my liking than Celinde Schoenmaker’s but I thought everyone was just right for their roles. Never heard Matthew Woodyatt before but would love to again - what an amazing voice he has. (Though I was tickled by the idea of a lawyer wearing trainers!)
It wasn’t flawless - orchestra/choir drowned out some of the soloists/small group songs. And while the narrator’s delivery was beyond question, some of her lines were so obviously “it’s Russia and everyone’s depressed and is now living in a shack drinking vodka” that it was actually unintentionally funny. Oh, and there really should be some sort of punishment for whoever rhymed “dwindling” and “kindling”. ;-)

Wow I’m so excited now reading these comments. Only got my ticket yesterday. Going to start making my way down there now. And thanks for the comment about the programmes. I’ll make sure to get one when I arrive as I usually get mine at the interval.

They must have massively underestimated demand as the place wasn’t full this afternoon and it’s not like I saw loads of people carrying them round with them. Isn’t this the first major thing Ramin’s done on stage since he came back to the UK? You'd think they’d know his fans would want a memento/something for him to sign...? Also there was such a queue to get in - I barely made it to the ladies’ in the basement, then back up to stalls, before the concert started - so there was definitely no time to buy beforehand. :-( |

Well, I loved that. Count me as another one who would happily have stayed for the evening had circumstances allowed.
I've been listening to this score since the first clips from the pre-Broadway production surfaced on YouTube (just checked and that was 2006, good grief how time flies!) Having been disappointed in the past with things that I've anticipated so much, part of me was a little wary - but no need. I've been a fan of Ramin's since Miss Saigon and he was every bit as good as expected, and the rest of the cast also lived up to that. I've never seen Celinde Schoenmaker before, but hope I will again, I thought she was glorious. Charlie McCullagh was excellent as Pasha/Strelnikov (and had some of us in the central stalls trying to remember what he'd been wearing in act one and figure out why he looked different after the interval) - one to watch, I feel.

Just as the choir struck up this afternoon, a lady scuttled all along the front row, asked a lady in the row behind a question, then scuttled halfway along the front row again. FOH noticed there was a problem and walked all the way to the front of the stalls to help. By that time Trinity Laban were trilling away pretty loudly, so the poor lady felt compelled to shout at FOH man: “Somebody’s sitting in my seat!” The pair of them then tried to move a group of people a few rows further back, but they seemed adamant they were in the right spot. Goodness knows what happened after that, because I realised I’d missed the entire scene-setting few minutes and thought I should probably be paying more attention to what was happening on stage! |
