Could be interesting though Marber as director doesn't fill me with confidence given his work at the National.

Must be Stoppard's first direct to West End play in a very long time. Things like Rock n Roll started in the subsidised sector.

Yes it is, and Marber is an inspired choice to direct if his wonderful production of TRAVESTIES is any gauge: easily the best take on that difficult play we are likely to see for some while now. Let's hope this latest is better than the entirely forgettable THE HARD PROBLEM.

Very exciting and unexpected news, he is 81 after all! It says the play needs a big company so i would imagine the NT are miffed he didnt offer it to them. Bound to be a top cast.

Badly worded, i didnt assume, from the article it would seem a likely destination, maybe they did say no.

After the horrific hard problem, I'll be wary of this. Will see casting/offers The Hard Problem was dreadful and forgettable. I think this has heavily discounted written all over it unless the casting is out of this world and you know not just Marber casting Debra Gillet.

How can we cast it when we don’t know who the characters will be? Or do we?

I would love to see Erich von Stroheim in this.
It's going to be an interesting play, where it stands in the Stoppard oeuvre is to be determined but a guy who's written some of the stuff he has can be forgiven the occasional turkey.

Cast seems to scream offers/day seats In what way, please, zahidf? I really rate some of the cast (eg Alexis Zegerman, Adrian Scarborough and Dorothea Myer-Bennett - the last-named seems to pop up everywhere); it's the author himself of whom I am wary.

I really rate some of the cast (eg Alexis Zegerman, Adrian Scarborough and Dorothea Myer-Bennett - the last-named seems to pop up everywhere); it's the author himself of whom I am wary. No doubt, there are some distinguished theatre actors amongst the cast, and if this were debuting at the NT there is no reason to doubt it would sell advance tickets. The challenge in the West End is that the audience is a different mix - yes, there are regular play-goers who will recognise some names here, but it is far more reliant on the fairweather tourist - if they are going to pay top price for a seat at Wyndham's, then (understandably) stars are going to be a key part of the draw. And with the best will in the world, none of these actors are household names in the UK, let alone further afield.
Success for this production is going to be hugely dependent on how good the play is, so I can't see it selling well before the reviews are out. Let's hope it's the valedictory masterwork that would be a fitting bookend to Stoppard's career.
